C/2024 G3 (ATLAS) is a non-periodic, Sun-skirter comet discovered on April 5, 2024, by the Atlas Astronomical Survey. Judging by its orbit, it could be a new comet[1], entering the Solar System for the first time. It will come to perihelion on January 12, 2025, at a distance of 14.4 Million Kilometers from the Sun. However, it is not a Kreutz Sungrazer, a family of comets that come within 850,000 miles from the Sun during their perihelion. On the day of its perihelion, it will be magnitude -2.0 or higher, although will not be visible due to its proximity to the Sun and its glare, and its closest approach to the Earth on January 14, 2025, at 140,393,440 Million Kilometers.[2] Although the comet could disentegrate before its perihelion due to tidal forces and the immense gravity of the Sun, this has not been confirmed. According to Astro vanbuitenen[3], the comet has an eccentricity of ≤1, and could have a potential ejection from the Solar System.
Obervational history
[edit]The comet was discovered by the Atlas Astronomical Survey, on April 5, 2024. The comet at the time was 4.64 AU (695.72 Million Kilometers) from the barycenter of the Solar System, and 4.38 AU (656.56 Million Kilometers) from the Earth, at an apparent magnitude of 18.99. In November, the comet was at a magnitude of 11.8, visible through professional telescopes. Although no observations of the comet have been observed yet, there might be some during the winter of 2024-2025.
