Brighton Rocks International Film Festival (BRIFF) is a film festival that has been held annually since it was founded in 2017.[1][2] It takes place in Brighton at the Dukes at Komedia cinema and the Manchester Street Arts Club.[3][4] The festival expanded from being a weekend to a six-day event in 2023.[5][6]

Overview

[edit]

The festival specializes in films made by emerging independent filmmakers, films made in the Brighton locality and works exploring LGBTQIA+ themes. Filmmakers can submit their work to 17 genre categories for consideration by the festival's programmers.[7]

BRIFF bestows 33 awards at each festival, including several for special awards for young filmmakers.[8][9] One of the festival's most coveted award is the Brighton Spirit Award "given to a filmmaker whose work encapsulates the essence of not only the city but also the ethos of the film festival - bold, brilliant, pushing boundaries and tolerance."[10]

Highlights of the festival are broadcast on Latest TV after the event.[11] The festival also holds special screenings throughout the year for local interest productions.[12][13][14]

Brighton Rocks International Film Festival receives support from its partners the British Film Institute (Film Hub South East), BIMM University & JQS Learning.[15] In 2023 it became a qualifying festival for the British Independent Film Awards.[16]

Its parent organization Rocks Film Festivals also runs the Hastings Rocks International Film Festival, held annually in April in Hastings. The group has curated film festivals in London and Los Angeles.
