Brenda Fathy Abdelall is an Egyptian-American lawyer, civil rights advocate, and government official. She currently serves as the Assistant Secretary for Partnership and Engagement at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), where she leads efforts to engage with state, local, tribal, territorial governments, and non-governmental organizations.[1]

Early Life and Education

Brenda Abdelall was raised in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where her family was involved in political activism. Her mother, Mona Abdelall, was a community organizer who played a significant role in establishing the local chapter of the American Muslim Council, which advocated for Muslim political and civil rights in the U.S.[2]

Abdelall completed a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Arabic Islamic Studies from the University of Michigan in 2002, followed by a Juris Doctor (J.D.) from the University of Michigan Law School in 2005. During law school, she co-founded the Middle Eastern and North African Law Student Association (MENALSA) to support Arab American students in legal education.[3]

Career

Early Legal Career After graduating from law school, Abdelall began her career as a Legal Fellow at the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), focusing on constitutional and First Amendment issues.[4] She later joined Sidley Austin LLP as an Associate, where she worked in regulatory compliance and policy advising for clients in the pharmaceutical and medical device industries.[5]

Academic and Compliance Roles In 2011, Abdelall joined New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) as a Resident Assistant Instructor and later became Deputy Chief Compliance Officer. At NYUAD, she focused on labor rights and compliance related to migrant workers employed by the university's contractors.[6]

Department of Homeland Security In August 2022, Abdelall was appointed Assistant Secretary for Partnership and Engagement at the DHS. In this role, she advises on external relations with communities and stakeholders, particularly those from minority and immigrant groups.[7] She also co-chairs the DHS Council to Combat Gender-Based Violence.[8]

== Personal Life == Brenda Abdelall is the founder of midEATS, a blog exploring Middle Eastern cuisine and culture. She uses this platform to discuss the significance of food in cultural preservation and its role in immigrant communities.[9]
