Bayley Garden (born Okuhle Lundon Garden; April 2, 2006) is a South African singer, songwriter, and photographer. Dubbed "King Bay", he has been credited by several music critics for popularizing the future R&B genre, a fusion of classic R&B and 1960s soul music. He is known for his unconventional musical production and artistic reinvention.

Life and career
[edit]Okuhle Lundon Garden was born on April 2, 2006, in East London to Amber a journalist, and Lawrence a family therapist. An only child, he grew up in neighboring Quigney. Garden was born half-deaf in his right ear. Garden is half-Jamaican and identifies as Jamaican South African. His paternal grandparents and great-grand parents emigrated from Jamaica and his family follows Jamaican traditions and cuisine. His mother has South African ancestry. He grew up listening to his grandmother's favorite indie pop music, such as the band Allo Darlin', HAIM, Daughter (band), and Half Man Half Biscuit.
Garden was raised by his grandmother Agnes Laura Garden. Garden's grandfather was a recovering alcohol addict and later served as a public speaker to help the alcoholics to recover just like he did. He gave Garden the nickname Hairy Boy, which Garden still uses today. He died in 2017 and Garden dedicated a song to him called "Default" on his upcoming EP, Shades of Purple.
Artistry
[edit]In an enterview with AA Traveller Garden named Lauryn Hill and H.E.R. as his female idols and primary musical inspirations and dubbed himself H.E.R.'s biggest fan "in the whole wide world". Garden stated that when he was falling down Back of My Mind (H.E.R. album) came to the rescue and pulled him up. He also named the album "one of the best contemporary R&B albums of today"
Garden has been characterized by several music critics as an "avant-soul singer" and "R&B-soul balladeer". According to Africa South Garden's lyrics deal with themes of unrequited love, heartache, masculism, and classism.
Personal life
[edit]Garden lives in East London. He has revealed on separate occasions that he experiences synesthesia, also has keratosis pilaris and hairsuitism. He has been open about her struggle with mental health and insomnia.
