Augie K. Fabela II (born 1968) is an American entrepreneur and business executive. He is the co-founder of the telecommunications company VEON, founder of FastForward.ai, a company focused on e-commerce-as-a-service. He serves as Chairman of VEON's board of directors, Executive Chairman of FastForward.ai, and Chief Special Assistant to the Sheriff in Cook County, Illinois. He is also an author of books on business and law enforcement.

[edit]Mr. Fabela is a son of Colombian and Mexican parents.[1]. He has a wife [2] and a son, Andrew Fabela [3]
Education
[edit]Mr. Fabela graduated [4] from Stanford University with a Master of Arts (MA) in International Policy Studies (1986–1987) and a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in International Relations and Affairs (1983–1987).
In addition to his academic background, Mr. Fabela completed training at the Police Academy (NEMRT) and the Gateway SWAT Operator School, earning certification as a law enforcement officer and Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) operator in the State of Illinois.
Career

[edit]After graduating from Stanford University, Mr. Fabela spent two years in Tokyo, Japan where he worked [5] for Fujisankei Communications Group, one of the country’s largest media conglomerates.
Mr. Fabela returned to the USA where he together with his father founded a company called Plexsys [6]. Plexsys was engaged in the production of equipment for cellular networks.
In October 1991, Augie K Fabela II came to Russia in search of new markets for Plexsys[7]. At that time, Cellular networks in Russia were at the initial stage of development. Mr. Fabela was also looking for partners in the field of advanced radio technology, and he contacted Vympel, a research and production association in the defense sector, and got a meeting with the management.
In January 1992, Plexsys invited to the US a delegation from Russia, incling Dmitry Zimin. Later that year, at the age of 25, Mr. Fabela co-founded VEON (formerly known as VimpelCom) together with Dmitry Zimin [8].
Mr. Fabela served as Chairman of the Board of VEON from 1994 to 2001, leading the IPO of the company to NYSE in 1996 [9]. Mr. Fabela remained as Honorary Chairman of VimpelCom's Board of Directors until 2022. He became VEON's Chairman again in 2011 and served until the end of 2012.
Mr. Fabela rejoined VEON Board as an independent director in June 2022 [10]. Later that year, VEON announced the sale of it's Russian subsidiary, PJSC VimpelCom[11]. In 2023, as VEON board member, Mr. Fabela visited Ukraine and VEON's local subsidiary, Kyivstar amid Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2023[12] and 2024[13].
Mr. Fabela currently serves as the Chairman of VEON's board of directors, Executive Chairman of the board at FastFowrard.ai [14] and a Board director at Shareability, a brand performance agency [15].

Law Enforcement Career
[edit]In 2010, Augie became a certified police officer in Chicago, his birthplace, graduating from the police academy at the age of 44.
In 2011-2023, Mr. Fabela served as Commander, Special Operations in Homicide Task Force at Police aviation in Winthrop Harbor, Illinois.
As of 2024, he continues to serve at Chicago Cook County Sheriff’s Office as Chief - Special Assistant to the Sheriff at Sheriff's Department [17] in Cook County, Illinois
