The Attack on Ješkovo (in Serbian: Sukob u Ješkovu, in Serbian Cyrillic: Сукоб у Јешкову, in Albanian: Beteja e Jeshkovës) was an attack executed by the Armed forces and the Police of Yugoslavia against the KLA garrison in the village of Ješkovo, near Prizren, during the Kosovo War.
Battle
[edit]On 11 March 1999, after observing that there were active KLA guerrilla fighters in the region, members of the Yugoslav army and police set out to destroy the groups and recover control over Ješkovo. Soldiers and policemen, after several hours of hard climbing towards the hills around the village, arrive at these inaccessible peaks, thus they overcame the positions of the KLA fighters. In the early hours of the morning, Ješkova becomes surrounded by the Yugoslav army and police, numbering around 3,000 troops[9][10][11], according to the KLA. Yugoslav forces began shelling Ješkovo, with the goal of destroying the Headquarters of the KLA’s 125th Brigade of Prizren. The fight occurred at 1,176 meters above sea level, and the mission was organized and carried on by the commander of the 549th motorized brigade Božidar Delić and lieutenant colonel Stojan Konjikovac.[1] Him, with a group of 10 members of the military and police started attacks in an hill 200 meters from the village. At 12:30 PM, Yugoslav soldiers used 120 and 82 mm mortars from Zviljen in the area of Hoča Zagradska to fire at their enemies. Then the infantry starts to advance towards Ješkovo and starts to attack the village, which was defended by 40 fighters.[12][13] A KLA member threw a bomb from a house that injuried three police officers.[1][1]
Hours of fighting passed, and Yugoslav forces ended up winning, causing 21 killed members on the KLA side[2][4][3][5][6], while 13 were missing.[7][8]
