Asubo Ladies FC is a Ugandan professional Women's Football Club competing in the FUFA Women Super League.

Asubo Ladies FC abbreviated as ALFC originated from Kyebando Village in Kawempe Division one of the five divisions that make up Uganda's Capital City Kampala

Asubo Ladies FC started as Gafford Girls Soccer Academy but the title kept on changing to Gafford Girls FC, Gafford Ladies FC, Asubo-Gafford Ladies FC to now Asubo Ladies FC, many media outlets and football circles continue to refer the club to Gafford Ladies^[1].

History

The club was founded on 28th November, 2012 by Henry Barungi and William Gafford.

The club started as an academy for only girls living in Kyebando a village in Kawempe, one of the five divisions that make Kampala Capital City.

In 2013, the team became a club and started playing in different football tournaments in Kampala, then in 2014, the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) started a Women's Football League named FUFA Women Elite League and Gafford Girls FC (the then name) was among the pioneer clubs. In that year 2014 FIFA supplied the clubs with football equipments like Jerseys, balls, bibs and balls.^[2]

In 2015, the club changed from Gafford Girls FC to Gafford Ladies FC, the name they harbored until 2018 when they changed to Asubo-Gafford Ladies FC, this is when their club Patron, Asubo Sydney started to officially finance the club.^[3]

In 2022, the club requested FUFA to change the name from Asubo-Gafford Ladies FC to Asubo Ladies FC, the current name.

Though Asubo is one of the pioneer clubs in Uganda's women football, they have never won a league title, the best they have reached is finishing third (winning bronze medal) in 2018 when the beat Kampala Queens at Phillip Omondi Stadium Lugogo (now MTN Omondi Stadium). Asubo lost 1-0 to Olila High School Women Football Club on semifinal but beat Kampala Queens 1-0 on the third place playoff and Monica Namwase scored that lone goal for Asubo.

2016 was their first year to reach the playoffs but on semifinal, they lost to She Corporate 2-1 and on the third place play off, the lost 2-1 to UCU Lady Cardinals. Wabwire Stephan (now the club Technical Director) was the first head coach of the club and Wanyama Benjamin was his assistant coach. Gafford Ladies FC (then) was the first club to play final of the FUFA Women Cup in 2017 but they lost that final to Olila High School Women Football Club. The final ended 1-1 in normal time but Olila won 3-1 via penalty shootouts. Evelyn Kakayi a defender, scored the only goal for Gafford.

The same year 2017, Gafford (then) was relegated to regional league following a poor show in the league in 2016/17 but the FUFA executive committee decided that Gafford should not be relegated because it was one of the clubs that have never failed to honor a league game. The following Season, 2017/18 Gafford (then) qualified to playoffs and won a bronze medal. That season, Kawempe Muslim SS Ladies FC won their last Elite League trophy.

In 2019, the Federation introduced a new league format, that is FUFA Super league using the project termed Take Flight Project, since Asubo finished below the top five positions in their group (Victoria Group), the club remained in Elite League and never take part in the inaugural FUFA Women Super League.

The following season, Asubo tried to get promoted to Super league but lost the playoff final against the then promoted Tooro Queens, the final was held at FUFA technical centre in Njeru Buikwe District.

The 2021/22 season, Asubo-Gafford FC under Wanyama Benjamin, got promoted to Super League after topping their group (Victoria) they got automatic qualification to Super. ^[4] In 2023, they survived relegation on the final day ^[5]but in 2024, they were relegated to Elite League. In 2023, the club feature in FUFA Women Beach Soccer League and they won that trophy. It's the official association football trophy the club has even won since it's inception in 2012.

Ownership and finances

The club is a private company owned by three individuals, Henry Barungi the Pioneer founder and doubles as the club President, Asubo Sydney is the club's Patron and Kayima Huzairo who is also the club Chief Executive Officer. It gets it's financial support from the above individuals, get some funds from the players sales and the smallest percentage comes from the get collection.

Stadium

As of now, 2024, the club hosts their home matches at Kawanda SS Playground in Wakiso District.

Achievements

Asubo Ladies FC won the FUFA Women Beach Soccer League in 2023. In the FUFA Women Elite League, they won a silver medal in 2022, Bronze medal in 2018 and finished fourth in 2016. They also have a silver medal in the FUFA Women Cup for the 2017 campaign.
