Ash Civil (born April 16, 1991) is an English football coach who is currently the head coach of Finnish Ykkösliiga club SJK Akatemia.
Civil played football as a youth, but retired at 21 and became a coach. He has coached in England, America, Iceland, and Finland, including roles at Northampton Town F.C., The English FA, Brooke House College Football Academy , Tampereen Pallo-Veikot (TPV), and SJK Seinäjoki. After helping TPV to promote to the Kakkonen and winning the TUL Cup in 2023, Civil joined SJK as an assistant and transition coach to the club's Ykkösliiga team.
Managerial career
[edit]England
[edit]After a short playing career in amateur football as a midfielder, Civil began his coaching career in 2013 as Assistant Manager at Rothwell Corinthians in the United Counties League and as an Academy Coach at FCV International Football Academy, working with U16-U19 teams.
In 2014, he had a short stint as an assistant manager at Wellingborough Town Football Club [2] before joining AFC Rushden & Diamonds as the U16 Coach in September 2014.
During the 2016/17 season, Civil worked across the youth development phase as a youth development phase coach at Northampton Town. Simultaneously, he served as a coach mentor at the The English FA, supporting the development of grassroots football coaches.
In 2017, he joined Brooke House College Football Academy as an academy coach and U16 coach, later being promoted to assistant academy manager. In this role, he focused on player development and the recruitment of future players.[3][4][5]
Iceland
[edit]In December 2019, Civil was named the manager of Icelandic 3rd division club Einherji, marking his first position in senior football. [6][7] Einherji, located in Vopnafjörður on the east coast of Iceland, achieved a 9th place finish in the 2020 season under Civil's leadership. This season was notable for being the top goal-scoring season in seven years and the third highest in the 47-year history of Einherji's men's team. The season was cancelled after 20 games due to COVID-19.
Finland
[edit]In 2021, Civil was appointed as the U17 and U20 coach at Tampereen Pallo-Veikot (TPV) in Finland.[8] Later his contract was extended and he was promoted the first team manager in November 2021.[9][10]
In the 2022 season, TPV narrowly missed the promotion to the Kakkonen, losing out on goals scored. Despite this, the team had a notable run, including reaching the finals of the TUL Cup. Civil persisted and in 2023, he won his first trophy as a senior head coach, leading TPV to become TUL Cup Champions and securing the league title with one game to go.[11]
Following his successful stint at TPV, Civil moved to Veikkausliiga club SJK Seinäjoki in 2023 and started as an assistant coach of the reserve team SJK Akatemia in the second-tier Ykkösliiga. In this role, he acted as a bridge between the players and the coaching staff, supporting the transition of players from the SJK Akatemia 2 team to the SJK Akatemia Ykkösliiga team.[12] After SJK Akatemia head coach Arttu Aromaa stepped down in July 2024,[13] Civil was appointed the team's new head coach.
