Anna Maria Vasa (Polish: Anna Maria Wazowna; 23 May – 9 February 1600), was the first-born and eldest daughter of Sigismund III Vasa and his wife, Anne of Austria, Queen of Poland.

Anna died at the age of 6 by measles[1], her brother, Władysław IV Vasa, succeeded to the throne of Poland and Sweden after the death of their father.

Early Life

[edit]

Born Anna Maria Wazowna, Anna Maria was Princess of Poland and Sweden, she was eldest daughter of Sigismund III Vasa, King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithania and his first wife; Anne of Austria, Queen of Poland. She grew up alongside her younger siblings, including her brother Władysław IV Vasa, who succeeded their father as the future King of Poland at the age of 15.[2]

Her parents' union was a political and motivated marriage, it was intended to tie the families of Habsburg and Vasa.

Following after her birth, Anna Maria was baptized in Kraków, Poland. She was accompanied by her paternal aunt, Anna Vasa of Sweden.[2] On 10 February 1598, Anna Maria's mother died from a hemorrhage. Growing up, Anna Maria and her brother were placed under the care and teaching of Urszula Meyerin.[3]

On 9 February 1600, Anna Maria died from Measels in Kraków, Poland. Her body was buried at the Wawel Cathedral, jointly with her parents and her brother.[1]
