China First Beach, also known as Maoming Seaside Park, is a tourist destination located in Dianbai District of Maoming City, Guangdong Province. It is one of the earliest developed and most visited scenic spots in Maoming. Established in 1993, the park is situated 25 kilometers from the city’s downtown and spans a planned area of 3.6 square kilometers, with a core area of 1.2 square kilometers. The main feature is a natural beach stretching 12 kilometers in length and approximately 300 meters in width.
history
[edit]In 1992, Maoming City established the Shuidong Economic Development Experimental Zone in Dianbai to promote economic growth. To support this initiative, the relevant departments of the Development Zone Committee decided to develop the Shuidong Bay Provincial Tourist Resort, including transforming the beach at the base of Hutou Mountain into a tourist attraction. At the beginning of 1993, Comrade Yang Maozhi, husband of Liu Siqi, visited the Shuidong Development Zone. During the visit, he suggested to Li Guanlai, who was then Party Secretary and Director of the Development Zone Committee, to name the beach “The First Beach Under Heaven.” Inspired by Yang Maozhi’s suggestion, Li Guanlai proposed calling it “China First Beach,” a suggestion that received support from the Maoming Municipal Party Committee and the city government.
China First Beach officially opened to the public in 1993, featuring four functional areas: a beach bathing area, a marine sports area, a seaside resort area, and a central plaza. It developed various tourist activities, including sea bathing, sunbathing, water sports, beach volleyball, and health retreats, managed by the Tourism Corporation of the Maoming Shuidong Economic Development Experimental Zone. On September 25, 1993, then General Secretary of the Communist Party of China Jiang Zemin visited China First Beach. Later, on November 11, 1993, Li Desheng toured the beach and inscribed its name as “China First Beach.”
In 2001, China First Beach was rated as a national 3A-level tourist attraction. In 2017, it was upgraded to a national AAAA Tourist Attractions of China.
In 2012, the Maoming city government designated a 20-kilometer stretch along the east and west coasts of China First Beach as “Maoming Seaside Park,” establishing it as an open-access tourist and leisure destination, free to the public.[1]。
In 2018, the Maoming Municipal People’s Government signed a Strategic Cooperation Framework Agreement with Overseas Chinese Town Enterprises . In August 2020, OCT Group officially took over the management of China First Beach.[2]。
sports competition
[edit]China First Beach served as a venue for beach volleyball competitions and hosted the inaugural National Beach Volleyball Championship in 2000[3],In 2001 and 2002, the FIVB Women’s Beach Volleyball World Tour Open was held at China First Beach[4][5],The 2019 Asian Beach Volleyball Championship was held at China First Beach[6]。
