Move to Shades of purple

[edit]

I propose that this category and its associated template be moved to ...:Shades of purple (or ...:Varieties of purple). My reasoning is simple. Violet refers specifically to the colour of 380–420 nanometre spectral light or a colour of similar hue. Therefore such colours as magenta, cerise, red-violet, sangria, rose, etc. are too reddish to be considered shades of violet. One might even argue that indigo is also no shade of violet being too bluish (440-420 nanometres). Purple, on the other hand, is a broader term ... at least in everyday speech: purple includes all of these colours between red and blue. If consensus is reached that we should rather use the more specialised and restricted chromaticians' sense of the word purple, then perhaps we should split rather than move the category/template. I, however, wouldn't find the latter necessary or desireable. Of course, before doing any of this we should wait to see what becomes of the proposal to move Category:Shades of orange (and therefore all Shades of ... categories & templates) so as to void the risk of having to move/split Category/Template:Shades of violet twice. I totally agree with you! Violet is just a shade, while Purple is more broader term. Xr 1 (talk) 09:06, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Just a note that spectral violet is not actually a purple (as in a mixature of red and blue). Note violet may refer to both the spectral color as well as the extra-spectral purple colors. PaleAqua (talk) 09:58, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
In normal English violet is a shade of purple. It's a shame the colour theorists didn't choose another label (magenta might have worked) for the colours between violet & red. JIMp talk·cont 00:34, 21 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Unknown Shade of Purple

[edit]

What color is this supposed to be? Here's the RGB chart for it:
Red: 46
Green: 13
Blue: 87

It is around a plum shade.

Violet + Purple

[edit]

I think they need to be switched around. Purple is blue-violet but here it looks more like violet and the violet looks purple. 156.34.184.155 (talk) 21:58, 13 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
