Purpose?
[edit]Can someone tell me the purpose of this category? If as an aid to maintenance, what change is sought? --Hobbes Goodyear (talk) 00:55, 13 February 2015 (UTC)
- This is partly explained in the template documentation, which is linked in the top box. Sometimes articles are renamed because a disambiguation qualifier is no longer needed, such as Jupiter (planet). This category helps keep track of these redirect titles. There may be old piped links to these titles that would be broken if these were deleted. – Paine EllsworthCLIMAX! 22:17, 14 February 2015 (UTC)
Why is this a subcategory of Category:Redirects from ambiguous terms?
[edit]Basically what the title asks. As far as I can see, while some members of this category may be ambiguous terms, I'm not sure that all {{R from unnecessary disambiguation}}s are from ambiguous terms. Taking a couple of random examples: Top TV (Indonesia) is an unnecessary disambiguation of Top TV, but is not an ambiguous term (both redirects target MNC Vision); and Heavy Metal: F.A.K.K.2 (video game) is an unnecessary disambiguation of its target (Heavy Metal: F.A.K.K. 2), but is not an ambiguous term.
Pinging Paine Ellsworth, as you added this category in 2016. All the best, —a smart kitten[meow] 09:12, 24 April 2024 (UTC)
- Noting that I've boldly removed this category from Category:Redirects from ambiguous terms per the above. All the best, —a smart kitten[meow] 15:02, 1 May 2024 (UTC)
- That's likely the best way forward. Don't know what I was thinking so many years ago. I think I saw the ex-parent cat as an "umbrella" page of sorts. P.I. Ellsworth , ed. put'er there 15:24, 1 May 2024 (UTC)
- To editor a smart kitten: forgive me this afterthought, because I only rarely give awards. If you are inclined to accept barnstars, then you most certainly deserve the following:

- Thank you, Paine Ellsworth! I'm happy to accept barnstars, and it is very much appreciated :)
- I'll ping Eejit43 here to share in this barnstar, though, as it was only due to a conversation on his talk page which I still need to get around to responding to that I ended up looking at the details of this category tree at all. —a smart kitten[meow] 10:35, 3 May 2024 (UTC)
- The pleasure is all mine, a smart kitten! Category trees, editorial trees, WP has so many useful and deserving "trees" for us to share and for which we can be grateful.
