- Fair point. In that case should it be Category:National Defence College, India, alumni, with a helpful redirect at the target name that was suggested above; or kept where it is? – Fayenatic London 14:43, 12 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  - I think we have a general problem: triple-barrelled compound modifiers where one or more of the modifiers are two-part and comma-separated. This goes for both categories and articles, see for instance 2011 Columbus, Ohio mayoral election. I suggested in November 2015 a new naming convention for elections to avoid such constructs, but to no avail. That suggestion could possibly be applied here too.     - C2C rules that we drop the 2nd comma per convention in both the aforesaid parents. This matter has been discussed at cfd many times without progress being made. See eg Category:University of California alumni. Indeed I have not found a single example in this tree which complies with WP:COMMA. Oculi (talk) 16:22, 12 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
    - I used petscan to find all such: User:Oculi/sandbox1. There are 165 of form 'XXX, XXX alumni' only 2 of which have a 'closing' comma. So we might deduce that WP:Comma is not thought relevant in category names. Oculi (talk) 22:19, 12 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
      - I doubt that the reason is it's "not thought relevant in category names", since COMMA is also widely violated in article names and in article sentences. I think many editors just don't understand the function of the comma in these contexts. In many cases, it would be better to omit commas altogether than go with the lopsided one-comma version, but that is more likely to be noticed as unconventional. We should perhaps try to work up a consensus to avoid such awful structures, but maybe it's not possible to arrive at consensus on that. Dicklyon (talk) 18:54, 14 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
