Road movies category
[edit]Motorcycling in fiction does not belong in Category:Road movies for two obvious reasons: it contains all kinds of fiction, not just movies. And it contains all kinds of motorcycling fiction, not just road stories. WP:SUBCAT explains that "If logical membership of one category implies logical membership of a second, then the first category should be made a subcategory (directly or indirectly) of the second." Category:Sons of Anarchy is a TV show, not a movie, and not a road story. It does not belong in Category:Road movies, and therefore it's direct parent category, Category:Motorcycling in fiction does not belong in Category:Road movies either. There are 61 pages of motorcycling video games, and hardly any are road stories, and not one is a movie. There are many examples. Please read Wikipedia:Categorization#Category tree organization for further explanation.
By the way, even though we have a List of biker films, there is no category of motorcycling films, from which you could sub-categorize motorcycle road movies, and outlaw biker films. The solution here is more, better defined categories. --Dennis Bratland (talk) 17:01, 4 December 2012 (UTC)
- We need a Category:Motorcycling films analagous to the existing Category:Aviation films. — Brianhe (talk) 17:55, 4 December 2012 (UTC)
- Good suggestion. Make it so number one. --Biker Biker (talk) 18:05, 4 December 2012 (UTC)
- Just finished. It is a subcategory of this category. Can you take a look at the description of the category (mostly cut & paste from aviation) and see if it is accurate? Brianhe (talk) 18:19, 4 December 2012 (UTC)

Whether a story is a road story or chase story is orthogonal to what type of vehicle, if any, is used. Category:Road movies is a very high level genre of movie, and underneath that you could break it up by type of locomotion. Grouping Category:Auto racing films and Category:Motorcycle racing films under Category:Chase films is the same type of mistake; not all racing stories are chase stories. Few Category:Running films or Category:Cycling films or Category:Horse racing films fall in to the chase or road genres, and motorsports are no different. --Dennis Bratland (talk) 23:27, 4 December 2012 (UTC)
- I agree completely, was about to use the word "orthogonal" in my own reply when I saw you had already posted this. Seems to me the best thing to do is to label individual articles with Category:Road movies. — Brianhe (talk) 23:33, 4 December 2012 (UTC)
