thoughts on Infobox support

[edit]

@Cbl62, MisterCake, and Bagumba:

Examples: 1980 All-Pacific-10 Conference football team, 2004 All-SEC football team, 1970 All-Southwest Conference football team, 1922 All-Western college football team, 1951 All-Southern Conference football team, 2013 All-Big Ten Conference football team, 1959 All-Big Eight Conference football team

I've been recently editing in Category:All-Pac-12 Conference football teams and thought these articles would benefit from an Infobox, particularly to support navigation links to the immediate prior and subsequent articles (ex: Super Bowl 50, 1988 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament, 1996 NBA draft, etc).

The generic Template:Infobox does not support Prior/Next links, so perhaps this needs to be a custom creation. Perhaps suporting:

Note, I did not immediately see similar "All-Conf" articles for other collegiate sports, but we do have List of All-Pac-12 Conference men's basketball teams. If we support an Infobox, presumably it could be generalized e at the "college" level and work for all sports instead of being limited to football.

Thoughts? Cheers, UW Dawgs (talk) 21:52, 12 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I'm always a fan of "previous/next" navigation links in infoboxes. It's supremely better than having to use the navbox. I think if we do this, first we should set one up for College Football All-America Team articles. P.S. Cbl hasn't been on in a while. We might want to wait for his input before deciding anything since he's worked extensively with these articles. Lizard (talk) 22:17, 12 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good, except I would leave "Dvisions" out as they are not a factor in choosing the team IIRC.—Bagumba (talk) 22:43, 12 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, often wondered if there was a reason they did not have the previous/next feature. Nice to have for yearly awards needing separate articles. Cake (talk) 03:30, 13 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Things could get hairy if we start listing selectors. Everyone and their grandma's dog has an All-America team, and we currently don't seem to have a notability threshold for which ones to include. Lizard (talk) 17:35, 15 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I'm struggling with two related issues. Supporting a generalized implementation which works on 2014 College Football All-America Team, NFL's 2014 All-Pro Team, or 1980 All-Pacific-10 Conference football team seems wise. We also have (for recent seasons) articles which cover league seasons, for example 2014 Pac-12 Conference football season#All-Conference teams or 2009 Southeastern Conference football season#Awards and All-SEC Teams, but the Pac-12 article uses the league itself as the all-league selector while the SEC article uses the AP as the selector. It feels like the all-league team should reside as a section in the season review article (if/when created), but right now we have both types of articles and use multiple selectors. I've brought issues such as this up numerous times on both WP:NFL and WP:CFB. Like my continuing conundrum of which selectors to list on the NFL MVP page. Or why NFL Offensive Player of the Year redirects to the AP award, but NFL Defensive Player of the Year redirects to a page with a ~dozen different awards. Or why 2009 College Football All-America Team has such a horrendously difficult layout to follow but it's an FA. What I've observed is that apparently I'm either the only editor that sees these things as issues, or the only one who cares. Lizard (talk) 00:46, 16 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
