Battle of Livny (7 July 1618 ) was the capture of the Russian fortress by the Cossacks of Hetman Petro Konashevych-Sahaidachny at the beginning of the campaign against Moscow. The Cossacks destroyed a powerful garrison.[2][1][3]

Before battle

[edit]

Hetman Petro Sahaidachny set out from Zaporozhian Sich probably in June 1618, leading about 20,000 Zaporozhians. Earlier, some Cossack regiments, under the guise of preparing for an expedition, entered the Kiev Voivodeship and severely plundered its inhabitants. Only the threat of using the crown's troops against them made the unruly Cossacks stop the rapes.[2]

Battle

[edit]

So, the first Russiancity that the Zaporozhians attacked was Livny (it was located about 100 km north of the headwaters of the Oskol River, from which the section of the Muravsky Way passed to this city). TLivny appeared in the second half of the 80s of the 16th century on the Bystry Sosni River and became, along with Voronezh, the largest Russian fortress that stood on the way of Tatar troops. Cossacks of Petro Sahaidachny suddenly attacked this city on July 7 Saturday. His defenders tried to resist. Local governors Nikita Cherkasky and Petro Danilov even led their warriors on a sortie that proved fatal for them: P. Danilov was killed, and M. Cherkasky was captured. By one o'clock in the afternoon, Livny fell. Having broken through the spur and captured Livny the fortress, the Zaporozhians destroyed everyone they found there. After capturing the city, they settled in its post, as well as in the surrounding settlements. On July 10, the Cossacks left the Livny fortifications, preparing to march on other Russian cities.[1]
