Elections were held in Somaliland on November 13, 2024 concurrently with the 2024 Somaliland presidential election to elected 3 political parties who will then become the official national parties of the country for a period of 10 years. The 3 currently existing political parties along with 7 newly formed political associations will contest the election. [1]
Background
[edit]The Constitution of Somaliland stipulated that only three political parties could exist at any one time. As a result, every 10 years elections are held to determine the countries legal national political parties from a pool consisting of the existing political parties and newly formed political associations. In 2002 and 2012, local municipal elections were used to select national political parties, with the 3 highest preforming political parties/potlical associations becoming the countries official national parties.[2]
