On 8 November 2024, two Village Defence Guards (VDGs), identified as Kuldeep Kumar and Nazir Ahmed, were killed by militants in the Chatroo area of Kishtwar district, Jammu and Kashmir.[1] The Kashmir Tigers militant group claimed responsibility for the killings.[2]
The bodies of the victims were recovered from forested areas in Ohli Kuntwara. Following the discovery, a joint operation by the Indian Army and Special Operations Group (SOG) was launched to locate the perpetrators.[3]
Continued Gunfight
[edit]On 10 November 2024, based on intelligence reports indicating the presence of the suspected militant group, a joint operation was initiated in the Bhart Ridge area of Kishtwar. During the encounter, three Indian Army paratroopers were injured as the firefight continued.[4] The group involved in the operation was believed to be the same militants who had abducted and killed the VDGs.[5]
The encounter received widespread condemnation from officials, including Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who expressed condolences and vowed action against militant activities.[6]
Reactions
[edit]Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha condemned the attack, stating, "No words are strong enough to condemn the heinous terrorist attack on VDG members in Kishtwar. I convey my heartfelt condolences to the families of the brave sons martyred in this cowardly attack. We are firmly resolved to destroy all terror outfits & avenge this barbaric act."[7]
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and leaders from the Congress and BJP also expressed their condolences and called for swift action against the militants.[8]
