An outbreak of an unidentified disease started in the Democratic Republic of Congo in November 2024. As of December 2024, it has killed 143 people.[1]
Epidemiology

[edit]A deadly unknown flu-like virus was detected in the Southwestern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the Kwango province.[1]
Cases

[edit]As of December 2024, 143 people have been killed by this unknown flu-like virus.[2] Women and children were the most affected by the disease.[3] They are also reporting that sick people are dying inside of their homes as they lack treatment for the illness due to the lack of medicine and they are reporting that the cases will rise.[4]
Virology
[edit]The unknown flu-like virus is current showing high fever and severe headaches according to Remy Saki and Apollinaire Yumba who are health officials in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.[5]
Investigation into
[edit]The World Health Organization (WHO) has been alerted of this virus, and stated that it was working with the health officials of the Democratic Republic of the Congo to make further investigations in what this unknown flu-like virus is.[4] The (WHO) is also sending teams to collect samples also, and spoke to an official wanting anonymity because he was not allowed to speak to the media.[2] The CDC of Africa also responded and said that they are investigating with the government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo on this issue.[1]
Responses
[edit]Congo health official Yumba told people to not touch any dead bodies to deter the spread and to avoid contamination.[6] He also called on international partners to send aid and medical supplies to deal with the health crisis.[6]
