Yaw Yeboah (Akan pronunciation: [jaʊ yɛ.bɔa]; born 28 March 1997) is a Ghanaian professional footballer who plays as a winger for Major League Soccer club Columbus Crew.
Career
[edit]Right to Dream Academy
[edit]Yeboah joined the Right to Dream Academy in 2008 and graduated in 2014.[1][2]
Manchester City
[edit]Yeboah joined Manchester City in 2014.[3]
Loan to Lille
[edit]On 14 August 2015, it was announced that Yeboah would be loaned to Lille OSC for one year.[4] He made his debut for Lille on 25 October 2015 against Marseille in Ligue 1.[5][6] He only made three appearances for Lille, playing a total of 174 minutes.[7]
Loan to Twente
[edit]On 21 July 2016, Yeboah made a loan move to Dutch side FC Twente.[8] He scored his first goal for the club on 27 August, in a 3–1 win over Sparta Rotterdam.[9][10] His second goal came two months later on 22 October, in a 2–0 win over Go Ahead Eagles.[11][12]
Loan to Oviedo
[edit]On 1 September 2017, Yeboah was loaned to Spanish side Real Oviedo on a season long-loan, with the Spanish club having the option to sign him permanently.[13][14] Yeboah made his debut for Oviedo in the Copa del Rey on 6 September, coming off in the 81st minute.[15] He would receive a straight red in the 17th minute against Sevilla B.[16]
Numancia
[edit]On 18 July 2018, Yeboah signed a three-year contract with fellow Segunda División team CD Numancia.[17] He scored on his debut; a 3–3 draw versus Córdoba CF on 8 August 2018.[18] He was shown a second yellow in the match against Granada on 11 November, resulting in his suspension for the following game.[19][20]
Loan to Celta
[edit]On 22 July 2019, Yeboah joined Celta de Vigo B on loan for one year. The loan included a purchase option for RC Celta de Vigo.[21][22]
Wisła Kraków
[edit]On 11 August 2020, Yeboah completed a move to Ekstraklasa side Wisła Kraków, signing a three-year deal.[23][24] on 18 October 2020, he scored his first and second goals for his new club in a 6–0 victory against Stal Mielec.[25][26][27] On 10 September 2021, it was announced that Yeboah was voted as Ekstraklasa Player of the Month for the month of August.[28][29] Yeboah played fifty matches across all competitions for the club, scoring ten goals.[30]
Columbus Crew
[edit]On 6 January 2022, Yeboah transferred from Wisła Kraków to Major League Soccer side Columbus Crew, signing a three-year deal.[31] In his first season in MLS, Yeboah played on the right side of a 4–2–3–1 formation. He secured his first assist with the Columbus Crew in the opening match of the season, where his side won 4–0 against the Vancouver Whitecaps. While he initially started 10 out of his first 13 games for his new club, Yeboah's playing time decreased dramatically the rest of the season, making only six appearances for the remainder of the year, all as a substitute. His first season in the United States concluded with no goals and one assist in 20 appearances across all competitions.[32]
In his second season with Columbus, which was the first season under new manager Wilfried Nancy, Yeboah took on a new role as a left wingback in a 3–4–3 formation. He began the year as a substitute but scored his first goal coming off the bench for the Crew in a 4–0 victory against Real Salt Lake on 1 April 2023.[33] An ACL injury to Will Sands opened the door for Yeboah to become the full-time starter. Throughout the season, he appeared in 42 total games for Columbus across all competitions, tallying five goals and providing five assists, and scoring the game-winning goal in the MLS Cup Final.[34][35]
International career
[edit]Youth
[edit]Yeboah has made appearances for the Ghana U-20 team. He was awarded "most valuable player" in the 2015 African U-20 Championship scoring two goals.[36] He then played in the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup, making four appearances and scoring two goals, both from penalties.[37]
Senior
[edit]Yeboah received his first call up on 26 August 2016, for a 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualification match against Rwanda and a friendly against Russia.[38] He made the bench for the match against Russia, but failed to make an appearance.[39] Yeboah made his senior debut with the Ghana national team in a friendly 1–0 loss to Namibia on 9 June 2019.[40]
Style of play
[edit]A left-footed player, Yeboah has been deployed as a winger, an attacking midfielder and at wing-back.[21][41][42] He is known for his speed and skillful dribbling.[41][43][44][45]
Personal life
[edit]Yeboah is a Christian and his father is a pastor.[46]
