Wisconsin Area Music Industry

The Wisconsin Area Music Industry (WAMI) is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting and promoting the growth and recognition of Wisconsin's diverse music community. Founded in 1980, WAMI has been a driving force behind celebrating the achievements of musicians, bands, and industry professionals across various genres.

Awards

The WAMI Awards provide recognition and validation for Wisconsin musicians, boosting their careers and raising their profiles within the industry.

The annual WAMI Awards show is a highlight of the Wisconsin music calendar, recognizing outstanding talent in numerous categories through a peer-voting process. The event serves as a platform for showcasing the state's vibrant music scene and fostering a sense of community.

WAMI began presenting awards in 1980.[1] It held its award ceremony in Milwaukee until switching to Appleton.[1]

Notable artists who have won the WAMI Artist of the Year award include The Gufs (1998)[2] and Bon Iver (2009).[3]

Members of WAMI's hall of fame include the diverse artists Butch Vig, Al Jarreau, Bob Kames, Liberace, Les Paul, Violent Femmes, and BoDeans.[4]

Other notable artists to receive awards include alternative rock group Garbage, rockers Fever Marlene and Verona Grove, hip hop/rap group Rusty Ps, power pop rock band Yipes![5] and polka artists Verne Meisner and Louis Bashell. Nominees have included 2009 American Idol contestant Danny Gokey who didn't win that year but won the Male Vocalist the following year.[6][1]
