Article assessment in relation to WPNY

Project title
I fear that the project title is ambiguous. Our Western New York article is a mess because of this inherent ambiguity. Powers T 01:51, 27 August 2012 (UTC)
- Considering the fact that this project was only created a week ago, there hasn't really been a lot of time allotted to improving or looking over the top-priority article. Obviously our project will be devoting much time to Western New York in the coming days and weeks, and if you would like to join you are more than welcome. --Dekema2 (talk) 19:52, 27 August 2012 (UTC)
- I think you misunderstood my point. While the article I linked is indeed in bad shape, I was using it as an illustration of a deeper problem. That is, specifically, what is the scope of this project? Buffalonians tend to take a more restrictive view of what constitutes "Western New York" than, say, Rochesterians. I was invited to participate in this project because I edit Rochester-area articles... but this page mentions only Buffalo and Niagara Falls. Is Rochester included? Batavia? Geneva? Corning? Syracuse? Jamestown? Powers T 00:11, 28 August 2012 (UTC)
- The problem with adding Rochester is that I'm not sure if WikiProject New York founder TwinsMetsFan would want me to include Rochester into Western New York, but it isn't up to him. I will improve the scope, specifically by mentioning all counties covered in it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dekema2 (talk • contribs) 14:19, 28 August 2012 (UTC)

- So in a nutshell, you're interested in my opinion, but you really don't care what my opinion is. Seems contradictory to me. However, I really don't care what subprojects of WP:NY decide to do with their scopes. My main focus is on WP:NYSR, and has been for quite a long time.
- Like LtPowers, I'm not interested in a WNY project if it doesn't cover the Genesee Valley. – TMF (talk) 23:58, 28 August 2012 (UTC)
- Genesee Valley is within the confines of Western New York, so it's included. I better put that in the scope. --Dekema2 (talk) 04:06, 29 August 2012 (UTC)
- Why is Ontario County included but not Wayne or Steuben? Powers T 20:09, 31 August 2012 (UTC)
- Sources, including Wikipedia do not metion Steuben County as a county located in Western New York, typically it would be the Southern Tier. I will double check though. Wayne County is in Western New York however, and that was added a few days ago. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dekema2 (talk • contribs) 01:08, 2 September 2012 (UTC)

I just noticed this wikiproject from one of TwinsMetsFan's helpful Talk page edits. I'm afraid there is not a quorum of interested editors to keep an active project going. I'd prefer to merge the WikiProject Syracuse, mostly dormant but where i was/am a major participant, into a larger Western and Central New York WikiProject, and for it to even include the Southern tier and the Northern counties, i.e. everything outside the other upstate wikiprojects. Or to return to using WikiProject New York, which I think has had no recent activity at all. None of these have enough activity, IMHO, including the Hudson Valley one wp:HVNY and the Capital District onewp:CDNY. Anyhow, to head off further fragmentation, how about expand to central and southern tier and northern New York areas? --doncram 23:56, 26 November 2012 (UTC)
- I don't think there's any benefit to a wide-reaching task force that merges largely unrelated areas of the state together. That said, I'm not opposed to the creation of separate task forces for the Southern Tier and North Country.
- As for this particular project, it is probably better off as a WNY taskforce of WPNY - like I commented recently at the parent project, this project has had next to no activity since it was created. The vast majority of efforts made on behalf of this project have been by "outsiders", such as myself. Sure, I'm from the region, but I worked on the project page and took care of assessment on behalf of WPNY.
- Finally, the Syracuse project is also probably better off as a retooled project or task force covering all of CNY, since covering just Onondaga County is a bit of a narrow scope. That's a discussion for another page, though. – TMF (talk) 20:43, 4 December 2012 (UTC)
