Ships Carrying the Same Name

I'm new to Wikipedia and this project, so I'm sorry if this question isn't properly addressed by this project. I'm drafting an article about RV Regina Maris, a 144-foot barquentine built in 1908 most famous for her oceanographic research in the 1970s and 80s. She sank off of Long Island in a storm in the late 90s or early 2000s.

I've discovered another sailing vessel by the same name, so I'm curious to know how to distinguish between the Regina Maris that I'm interested in and the Regina Maris that's still afloat. I was thinking of titling my article "RV Regina Maris", as the second Regina Maris appears to be a charter luxury yacht (See this external link.) If I come across another Regina Maris that served as a research vessel, though, this might not be adequate. Is there precedent on how to handle this? Putting the ship type after the name in the article header (i.e. "Regina Maris (Barquentine)") or something? Thanks! -- Darmokandjalad (talk) 17:09, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

As long as there's no article for the other ship, there's no need to disambiguate. "RV Regina Maris" should therefore be enough. If you have further questions, please ask them on the project main talk page. I'm quite sure more people are watching that than the Sources section. The maintainer of the Web site Ships of the Old Navy ( http://www.cronab.demon.co.uk/INTRO.HTM ), which is devoted primarily to Napoleonic-era ships, has given Wikipedia permission to use any of his work. The Epopt has his statement of permission on file. The original site is no longer active, however its contents are available here.

French Marine Nationale
