Proposed merger
[edit]I think that it would possibly be useful to both this project and the fictional series project if it were to become either a formally named task force of that project or at least use the same banner. This subject is probably one of, if not the, most fully developed characters in all of fiction, with numerous appearances in almost literally any medium I can think of, and the article structure developed on this subject would be useful in any number of other similar subjects. Also, there have been several works in which Holmes and other fictional characters have appeared, many of whom would more directly fall within the scope of the other project, and some sort of closer relationship between the two groups might be extremely useful. I would support either renaming the group as a formal task force/work group, or at least possibly use the same banner, to reduce banner clutter and increase the level of cooperation between the two. John Carter (talk) 16:17, 9 March 2008 (UTC)
Some help
[edit]If there are still active members of this project, would anyone be willing to take a look at C. Auguste Dupin, an earlier fictional detective by Edgar Allan Poe? I'm considering nominating this for Good Article but am curious what others think it will need to improve. Many thanks. --Midnightdreary (talk) 14:15, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
Franchise naming convention discussion at WikiProject Media franchises
[edit]Dear WikiProject Sherlock Holmes participants...WikiProject Media franchises is currently discussing a naming convention for franchise articles. Since this may affect one or more articles in your project, we would like to get the opinions of all related projects before implimenting any sweeping changes. Please come and help us decide. Thanks! LA (T) @ 22:57, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
Are there enough articles on this subject to justify an Outline of Sherlock Holmes?
[edit]By the way, here's a relevant discussion about subject development you might find interesting.
Now back to the question...

WP 1.0 bot announcement
[edit]This message is being sent to each WikiProject that participates in the WP 1.0 assessment system. On Saturday, January 23, 2010, the WP 1.0 bot will be upgraded. Your project does not need to take any action, but the appearance of your project's summary table will change. The upgrade will make many new, optional features available to all WikiProjects. Additional information is available at the WP 1.0 project homepage. — Carl (CBM · talk) 03:54, 22 January 2010 (UTC)
Request for comment on Biographies of living people
[edit]Hello Wikiproject! Currently there is a discussion which will decide whether wikipedia will delete 49,000 articles about a living person without references, here:
Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Biographies of living people
Since biographies of living people covers so many topics, nearly all wikiproject topics will be effected.
The two opposing positions which have the most support is:
- supports the deletion of unreferenced articles about a living person, User:Jehochman
- opposes the deletion of unreferenced articles about a living person, except in limited circumstances, User:Collect
Comments are welcome. Keep in mind that by default, editor's comments are hidden. Simply press edit next to the section to add your comment.
Please keep in mind that at this point, it seems that editors support deleting unreferenced BLP articles if they are not sourced, so your project may want to source these articles as soon as possible. See the next, message, which may help.

Sherlock Holmes articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release
[edit]Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.
We would like to ask you to review the Sherlock Holmes articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.
We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

Series expansions
[edit]I created Sherlock Holmes (1965 TV series) and have added as much as I could with the books that I currently own. Both that article and Sherlock Holmes (1984 TV series) could stand to be fleshed out more, the latter especially as I was quite surprised to find that an article on the Jeremy Brett series is adequate at best. I would have assumed with all the fans of that series the article would rival other series articles like Futurama, but sadly this isn't the case. I will peruse my library as see what I can add but I would appreciate help from other Sherlockians. ThaddeusSholto (talk) 17:15, 17 March 2011 (UTC)
- I have added to and referenced the Sherlock Holmes (1954 TV series) article although there is definitely room for more improvement if anyone has any more references. ThaddeusSholto (talk) 18:12, 28 December 2011 (UTC)
Sherlock Holmes play
[edit]I noticed that there was no article about the famous William Gillette Sherlock Holmes play so I began writing one, Sherlock Holmes (play). It could use a little help if anyone has the time. ThaddeusSholto (talk) 11:25, 15 January 2012 (UTC)
Templates, etc
[edit]Is there a good way to see all of the templates that have been developed to help cover Sherlock Holmes?
I am not sure whether their Talk pages should carry WikiProject Media franchise, sherlockholmes=yes. I guess not, after visiting a few categories, which have no such banner. (But for categories I know of Special: Category tree], which is useful here because the one the eponymous category embraces so much.) --P64 (talk) 22:58, 30 May 2012 (UTC)
Sherlock Holmes the Musical page
[edit]Hi everyone,
I'm a student at Cornell University and for my Online Communities class my partners and I are editing a Wikipedia page. Our page is Sherlock Holmes the musical. If anyone has any suggestions for how to restructure or improve the article please let me know. Also, if you have any ideas for more sources, please let me know those as well!
Thanks so much!

Adaptation vs. Non-Canonical Works
[edit]I hope this is the place for this. The main Sherlock Holmes article wants to distinguish between these two concepts, but in reviewing the dedicated pages for each, the Adaptation page seems to incorporate a lot of Non-Canonical works (ex. The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes, The Seven-Per-Cent Solution, Murder by Decree, Young Sherlock Holmes, Without a Clue are all non-canonical films). I am interested in helping to clean up the Film, possibly TV, section of these pages (I have already started on the Non-Canonical page), but want to make sure I'm not mistaken about the intended scope of the Adaptation page first. Thanks! --Morphovariant (talk) 18:56, 16 January 2014 (UTC)

Leaflet for Wikiproject Sherlock Holmes at Wikimania 2014
[edit]Hi all,
My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.
One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.
This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:
• Active Wikiprojects: Wikiproject Medicine, WikiProject Video Games, Wikiproject Film
• Tech projects/Tools, which may be looking for either users or developers.
• Less known major projects: Wikinews, Wikidata, Wikivoyage, etc.
• Wiki Loves Parliaments, Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves ____
• Wikimedia thematic organisations, Wikiwomen’s Collaborative, The Signpost
The deadline for submissions is 1st July 2014
For more information or to sign up for one for your project, go to:

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal
[edit]Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:48, 1 October 2014 (UTC)
WikiProject X is live!
[edit]Hello everyone!
You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!
Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

I don't know how active this WikiProject is anymore but I finally started an article for the famous William S. Baring-Gould Sherlockian book, Sherlock Holmes of Baker Street. Considering how many projects it has directly influenced I thought it about time Wikipedia had an article. Please add details if you have any. ThaddeusSholto (talk) 16:01, 19 December 2017 (UTC)
The project page said this article was subject to AfD and needed some TLC to keep it up. I did the best I could but it was in pretty terrible shape they way I found it. Any help would be appreciated. ThaddeusSholto (talk) 18:09, 19 December 2017 (UTC)
I have begun List of actors who have played Dr. Watson as a companion to List of actors who have played Sherlock Holmes. Please add to it and help add links to other articles where appropriate. ThaddeusSholto (talk) 18:21, 22 December 2017 (UTC)
I have begun List of actors who have played Professor Moriarty as a companion to List of actors who have played Sherlock Holmes and List of actors who have played Dr. Watson. Please add to it and help add links to other articles where appropriate. ThaddeusSholto (talk) 16:16, 26 December 2017 (UTC)
Just like the above sections but List of actors who have played Mycroft Holmes. Please help if you are able. ThaddeusSholto (talk) 18:26, 26 December 2017 (UTC)

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject
[edit]The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.
Portals are being redesigned.
The new design features are being applied to existing portals.
At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.
The discussion about this can be found here.
Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.
Background
[edit]On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.
Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.
So far, 84 editors have joined.
If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.
If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.
Thank you. — The Transhumanist 07:55, 30 May 2018 (UTC)
Project Scope?
[edit]Hi, I'm pretty new to Wikipedia and very new to this WikiProject so apologies if this is a stupid question. I noticed that Benedict Cumberbatch is listed as an example of a good article on the project page (I'm assuming articles are only listed there if they fall under the project's scope?). Intuitively, this makes sense: he played Sherlock Holmes in a major adaptation. However, not only is this page not included in the Category:Sherlock Holmes, there's no obvious place where it would fit. Neither the subcategory Category:Sherlock (TV series) nor any other adaptation contains the pages of any actors who were involved in it. There is Category:Sherlock Holmes lists, which contains several articles of the form "List of actors who have played X", but can the scope of the project generally be said to include other articles that are linked to from an article that is included in the scope of the project?
In short, my question is: Are actors (and possibly writers etc) involved in adaptations of Sherlock Holmes currently within the project scope? Should they be?
Relatedly, if I made that thing some other projects have that lets you see all the articles and their status, would other people find that helpful? Allthegoodnamesaretaken2 (talk) 14:43, 24 October 2018 (UTC)
- @Allthegoodnamesaretaken2: To my mind, if the actors are known for playing Sherlock Holmes they would absolutely fall within the project scope. Basil Rathbone, William Gillette, and Eille Norwood? Definitely. Robert Downey Jr. and Charlton Heston? Maybe not.
- I would love it if you made the thing that lists articles and their status! ThaddeusSholto (talk) 14:59, 21 November 2018 (UTC)
Request for information on WP1.0 web tool
[edit]Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.
We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:24, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

User script to detect unreliable sources
[edit]I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like
- John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (
John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.
)
and turns it into something like
- John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14.
It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.
The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.
Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.

Project-independent quality assessments
[edit]Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class=
parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.
No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.
However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom
parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. Aymatth2 (talk) 14:05, 13 April 2023 (UTC)
