New Year Honours / Birthday Honours

Hello all. I am new on this project and have come here to get some opinions on the state of articles such as 1945 New Year Honours. This is a whole set of lists showing awards of various British orders of chivalry and medals. some of them are over 1,000,000 bytes long and need improvements.

I have split 1946 New Year Honours into sections. However one of the sections was put up for Afd. (see:Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/1946 New Years Honours (Commander of the Order of the British Empire)‎) and I have been advised to get some advice before altering any of the other articles in the set.

I propose to split the entire set in a similar way to the 1946 article, with fairly similar wording, headings etc. And have posted here to gain consensus.

Any comments greatly appreciated.

The 1946 New Year Honours was published in five supplements to the London Gazette dated 1 January 1946; Supplement No. 1 is the United Kingdom list which includes Dominions, India and Colonies, Protectorates, etc, Supplement No. 2 is the Canadian list, Supplement No. 3 is the Union of South Africa List, Supplement No. 4 is the New Zealand List and Supplement No. 5 is the British Empire Medal Dominions, India and Colonies, Protectorates, etc. Since 1890 to the present day there have been major lists of Imperial honours for the United Kingdom, Dominions, India, Colonies and Protectorates issued twice yearly for New Year’s Day and the King’ (and now Queen’s) Birthday. Until the 1943 New Year Honours, there was one consolidated list but from King’s Birthday 1943, Dominions had separate lists. There was no separate Australian List for 1946 although awards for the Australian military and the Australian states appear in Supplement No. 1 United Kingdom and also for the Australian states in Supplement No. 5 British Empire Medal. The honours are arranged in accordance with the Order of Wear. - The 1946 New Year Honours would be the last to use the format ‘The King has been graciously pleased to give orders for the publication of the names of the following personnel who have been commended: FOR VALUABLE SERVICE IN THE AIR’ and 'BRAVE CONDUCT'. From 1947 the name King’s Commendation for Valuable Service in the Air and the King's Commendation for Brave Conduct would be used and from 1952 the Queen’s Commendation for Valuable Service in the Air and the Queen’s Commendation for Brave Conduct.

I like this, the only concerns I have is it might be a bit long and technical for a first lede paragraph, and 'BRAVE CONDUCT' is capitalised, not sure if it should be or not. Please use any of this description since so much of the current introductory paragraphs are incorrect or unnecessary or irrelevant. I have no problem with the use of KCVSA and KCBC in the list but since they are not actually in the gazette felt an explanation was in order and I used upper case because it was a quote. British and Commonwealth honours articles

I am wondering if there is any interest in creating a subproject/task force for British and Commonwealth Honours. I know there are a few others with a special interest in these articles but I'm not sure how many are active. It's always going to be an expanding project and it would be good to have a central place to discuss issues, as it really spans multiple projects - UK/Commonwealth countries, military history and this project.

Either way, I want to improve these articles to be consistent. I have created many articles for missing honours lists, but many others are actually incomplete, have a very short intro, and/or are slapped with problem templates. All are very inconsistent in style, and I would like some input before I try to make everything consistent. For example, many do not even link to the award articles in the headers or have images of the awards. Another example, this edit by Jdforrester on the 2018 New Year Honours added an — (mdash) after names with the memo "Consistent formatting like other years" but it is not consistently used (only used recently) and is not even used consistently throughout that article. I do like how the mdash looks but it adds +3 in size for each usage versus a comma/space or period/space, which makes it an issue to use consistently because of the very long lists from WWI & WWII with 20k names. The large articles from the war honours cause people (who don't understand the topic mainly) to complain repeatedly, most recently resulting in a very poor hack job on 1946 New Year Honours by a now banned user.

After that, Anthony Staunton pointed out said user removed "Mentioned in Dispatches" in his purge. MID is not included in a lot of the honours lists but Anthony pointed out that they have encyclopedic value for military historians, which I can see, so I would like to know what others think. I would be happy to add them back in for previous lists. The Australian honours articles use a table format (see example: 2017 Australia Day Honours). I like how that looks for the most part (not a fan of the tables that don't go all the way across the page), especially the possibility of custom colors, but I'm unsure of the size factor in implementing it across larger articles. I also think {{British honours lists}} is getting too massive and should maybe be divided into smaller, collapsible templates, and that the New Zealand honours (the ones from when the NZ system was introduced) may be deserving of their own articles as Australia's are. I like the idea of it. I think the only reason that New Zealand gets put in with the UK is the timing of the honours lists. Australia doesn't have a New Year honours list, we instead have ours on 26 Jan (Our national day). I dont know anything about the Canadian system, so if we could include that, I think it would be a good addition for the Commonwealth section. I also like the idea. If we are talking about the New Year and Queen’s Birthday honours lists then they should be restricted to British honours announced in the London Gazette. We should respect that many Commonwealth countries have their own honours systems that are unique to each country. So I fully support New Zealand NYH and QBH being listed but they should be moved to separate lists linked to the New Zealand Honours System. It is inappropriate to mix British honours with awards from Commonwealth countries who have their own honours systems and British Civilian Gallantry lists in QBH 2017 which are not QBH honours.
