Stub Template

The project already has two infoboxes, but does the WikiProject need a stub template? Most do and as such I've created an example one at User:Smurrayinchester/Stub. smurrayinchester(User), (Ho Ho Ho!) 20:32, 19 December 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the adjustment. I've listed it at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Proposals#A Series of Unfortunate Events stubs. smurrayinchester(User), (Ho Ho Ho!) 20:45, 19 December 2005 (UTC)

How many articles do we want?

The number of ASUE-related articles is getting way out of hand. I want to get a list sorted as to which articles we actually want here on the 'pedia. Here is a draft (please edit/refine):

I'm slightly puzzled about what do with articles that don't fit the above articles. Some, such as Queequeg (A Series of Unfortunate Events) could go in locations, but sugar bowl (A Series of Unfortunate Events) and Verbal Fridge Dialogue (does that need an article?) don't seem to fit anywhere. smurrayinchester(User), (Ho Ho Ho!) 10:40, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

V.F.D. is there already and sugar bowl could go into V.F.D. --Celestianpower háblame 10:45, 20 December 2005 (UTC)
Sounds good! The location articles were much too short anyway. smurrayinchester(User), (Ho Ho Ho!) 10:50, 20 December 2005 (UTC)
I've removed Baudelaire parents because they aren't major characters, just relations. There' not that much to write about them. --Celestianpower háblame 10:57, 20 December 2005 (UTC)
I wasn't sure about them; they are pretty minor now, but there is the poison dart issue. Of course, if they do become more important in book 13th, we can always add them. By the way, I created List of locations in A Series of Unfortunate Events, but it does seem very long. smurrayinchester(User), (Ho Ho Ho!) 11:27, 20 December 2005 (UTC)
That's really good - and not too long at all. --Celestianpower háblame 14:26, 20 December 2005 (UTC)
In that case do we still need the original articles? Should, for example, Lousy Lane become a redirect to the list, or should the page be deleted and links within the articles changed to link to the correct section of the list? smurrayinchester(User), (Ho Ho Ho!) 14:33, 21 December 2005 (UTC)
Definately. And as to your query below, no, once we've condensed the number of articles per the above, it'll be small enough as is I think. --Celestianpower háblame 13:00, 25 December 2005 (UTC)
Thanks. And a merry Christmas to you! smurrayinchester Merry Christmas!(User), (Go Carolling) 14:37, 25 December 2005 (UTC)
Yeah - and to you too. --Celestianpower háblame 16:00, 25 December 2005 (UTC)
Has this trimming project basically been abandoned, since there now seem to be articles for all but the most minor characters and places, every one of them riddled with speculation and original research?

Template

The ASUE navbox is getting very large. I was thinking of changing it to a nav-box format (see the top template here), but I don't want to make a change which will affect all the articles without checking here. smurrayinchester(User), (Ho Ho Ho!) 17:07, 23 December 2005 (UTC)

Volunteer Training

Someone in the project might want to do something about Volunteer Training and Volunteer Training - The Puzzling Puzzles, probably making the first a redirect to the second, and merging what useful information is there (the fact that one sentence in both misses the word "down" after "upside" suggests someone wasn't paying attention in Wiki 101, but I don't know the book well enough myself to know what is or isn't useful for the articles). Confusing Manifestation 15:16, 31 January 2006 (UTC)

Well, someone apparently didn't get redirects, so they copied of Volunteer Training - the Puzzling Puzzles into Volunteer Training, while adding a little bit of out of date info to it. I don't know where they got the idea it comes out in March; it's sitting on my bookshelf now, and has been for over a year. I've made VT a redirect to VTtPP. smurrayinchester(User), (Talk) 15:24, 31 January 2006 (UTC)
Quite possibly because it was, in fact, a new rerelease with a new cover and extra content - speaking of which, the title never had the "Volunteer Training" prefix, and I propose moving the article to simply The Puzzling Puzzles - if anyone even reads this page anymore.

Hmm, looks like they may have done something similar for Kevin, who now has two listings in the Characters category. Confusing Manifestation 15:42, 31 January 2006 (UTC)

Funny; I thought I'd made both of them redirects to Count Olaf's theatre troupe. Ah, well, they are now. smurrayinchester(User), (Talk) 15:48, 31 January 2006 (UTC)
Not anymore - Kevin once again has his own article, like the other two freaks and indeed nearly every member of the troupe. Was this intended?
Oh no - he doesn't, does he? Most of what appears at {{ASUE}} needs to be merged into lists. Completely unsuitable for WP - see WP:FICT. —Celestianpower háblame 12:06, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

Count Olaf

I just though I'd point out that the Count Olaf article is woefully inadequate, not to mention full of spelling errors and even a few inaccuracies.

P.S. — It's also poorly written.

As I currently have no time for proper research, I've simply polished up the first section. I hope you like it. --Emerald Griffin 00:11, 10 July 2006 (UTC)
Do you have any suggestions or are you just here to complain?--CyberGhostface 00:37, 10 November 2006 (UTC)

Literary Allusions

This is a suggestion for all the entries in the Series of Unfortunate Events. All the books in the series contain tons of great literary allusions, such as the names of all the patients in the Hostile Hospital or castaways in The End, as well as catches of poetry, etc. However, I believe The End is the only entry that contains a comprehensive section of literaty allusions. Perhaps we should start to construct similar sections in the entries on the 12 other books. I will pitch in, maybe even start a couple sections in entries on the books I remember best, but I'm sure there are a lot that other allusions other people can provide that I forgot or didn't catch in the first place.

We can certainly do that; somebody just needs to get around to it. I'm kind of embarrassed for not getting to that myself. --Jitterro 21:50, 27 October 2006 (UTC)

We have a problem, people

Template:ASUE organization/Template:ASUE organisation has vanished, with no trace in the history except a series of dubious moves. It seems to have been lost trying to fix these moves. smurrayinchester(User), (Talk) 14:06, 14 July 2006 (UTC)

List of Wikiprojects

I've added this WP on the List of Wikiprojects. However, I've used the new WP:Children's literature as parent. I know nothing about A Series of Unfortunate Events, so feel free to edit me over there.--Steven Fruitsmaak (Talk) 22:16, 27 August 2006 (UTC)

Fair-use

The VFD eye image is licensed as a fair-use image. As I've been told more than once, we're prohibited from using fair-use images on templates due to copyright-related stuff. So...er...is it really okay for us to use that eye on our project templates? I've created a userbox for the project, and I'd rather not keep using the same sad face. --Jitterro 03:51, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

Okay, guys. The VFD eye is under fair use, which means that we have to hurry up and find a replacement for it; we can't use it in templates. I'll try to find a good replacement; just felt you should know. --Jitterro 22:16, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
You could do a drawing of a single eye -- doesn't have to be the VFD symbol. --JCoug 19:30, 20 October 2006 (UTC)
Well, I've finally found a suitable replacement. This one ought to be okay. --Jitterro 22:37, 27 October 2006 (UTC)

How can I join the Wikiproject? I made a few articles on ASUE about a year ago. I've read all the books at least 2 times so I think I could be of assistence.-Pacaman 21:54, 8 October 2006 (UTC)

Just add your username to the list. --Jitterro 21:07, 18 October 2006 (UTC)

Technically there's 15 books, soon to be 16 - you missed out Lemony Snicket: The Unauthorised Autobiography, and Horseradish: Bitter Truths You Can't Avoid is coming out sometime in 2007. Just to be pedantic :) lol, edit cos i got the name of the book wrong --DanCrowter 13:15, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

Project Directory

Hello. The WikiProject Council is currently in the process of developing a master directory of the existing WikiProjects to replace and update the existing Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. These WikiProjects are of vital importance in helping wikipedia achieve its goal of becoming truly encyclopedic. Please review the following pages:

and make any changes to the entries for your project that you see fit. There is also a directory of portals, at User:B2T2/Portal, listing all the existing portals. Feel free to add any of them to the portals or comments section of your entries in the directory. The three columns regarding assessment, peer review, and collaboration are included in the directory for both the use of the projects themselves and for that of others. Having such departments will allow a project to more quickly and easily identify its most important articles and its articles in greatest need of improvement. If you have not already done so, please consider whether your project would benefit from having departments which deal in these matters. It is my hope to have the existing directory replaced by the updated and corrected version of the directory above by November 1. Please feel free to make any changes you see fit to the entries for your project before then. If you should have any questions regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you. B2T2 22:28, 23 October 2006 (UTC)

Sorry if you tried to update it before, and the corrections were gone. I have now moved the new draft in the old directory pages, so the links should work better. My apologies for any confusion this may have caused you. B2T2 14:15, 24 October 2006 (UTC)

Templates

Apparently someone changed all the templates from the ones that discussed the shared themes into generic book templates? Why was this changed? Was it discussed?--CyberGhostface 00:29, 10 November 2006 (UTC)

Chapter Fourteen & The End

I know I should probably say this on The End talk page, but I think this also has to do with the entire ASOUE project. Chapter Fourteen originally had its own page. It contained a lot of useful and notable information about it. However, because it was not a book in its own right, the page was merged and redirected to the End. I created its own section for it, describing the plot and the poem that appears on the copyright page. Another user CyberGhostface removes the section and places a paragraph or so in the plot summary. I personally thinks Chapter Fourteen deserves more than that, at least its own section. It is the most important chapter in the entire book series. It won't hurt the page in any way. Also, Chapter Fourteen is not just a continuation of chapter thirteen. It takes place more than a year later. Lemony Snicket (Daniel Handler) clearly thinks it is extremely important. It is given its own copyright page and section of the book. I'm not asking for an article. I'm asking for a simple section in The End (A Series of Unfortunate Events). What do the members of this project think? Does this important Chapter that originally had its own page deserve more than a paragraph? I would really like to know the project member's thoughts. Thank you. Clamster5 23:06, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

First off, you've violated 3RR and I've reported you as such. Secondly, I didn't remove your precious section...all I did was remove the heading, integrated it better into the main plot section and moved the poem onto the end of the page. I even referred to it as the fourteenth chapter.
I suggest other users look at the differences to see how much Clamster5 is exaggerating here. All I removed was superfluous information like "After some blank pages, this is followed by authentic-looking pre-title, bibliography, title, copyright and dedication pages, all designed to give the impression that Chapter Fourteen is a separate small book in its own right. It has only one chapter, also called "Chapter Fourteen", which begins the page numbering again at 1 and ends on page 13. Unfortunate Events""

List of locations

Do we need all the locations listed on the template? I tihnk we could just include a link to List of locations in A Series of Unfortunate Events. Many of them are already just redirects to List of locations in A Series of Unfortunate Events, and the rest are all linked to from List of locations in A Series of Unfortunate Events. If this isn't changed, should the locations on List of locations in A Series of Unfortunate Events be linked to from the template, because currently some are and some aren't. Pacaman! 21:56, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

I think only the places where the main action in each book happens should be included in the template because those are the places that are important to the series. Also, because of their importance I think they also should each have enough info for an article so redirecting back to List of locations in A Series of Unfortunate Events shouldn't be a problem. --AirLiner 23:02, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
I agree with Airliner. Only places were the main action of the story occurs should be included in the template - theres too many links on there anyway. I merged both the Anxious Clown and Cafe Salmonella articles with the list and will remove their names from the template. Could a similar thing be done with the minor characters section of the template? Clamster5 00:17, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

I propose this list of major locations to be included on the template:

Clamster5 00:53, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

The problem is deciding which characters are important ones. For example, some characters make a huge appearence in only one book, whiel others make insignificant appearences in multiple books. Some characters with lots of information (Such as the Baud parents) have lots of information, but don't appear in the books. Perhaps characters could go back, with a few changes, to what is represented at template:ASUE/proposed?

As for places, maybe we should have an article for places in each book, and then one page for other, which would include places from LSUA and places which make multiple appearances. The reason for this is incase some people disagree on places being the main action, for example, I think the Gorgonian Grotto and The Carmalita are just as important, if not more so, than the Queequeg. The list of places would either be deleted or serve as a directory in case somebody doesn't know what book a location is under.

Also, the following places aren't mentioned in List of locations in A Series of Unfortunate Events yet:

  • Mr. Poe's house
  • Dr. Orwell's office
  • Veblen Hall

That may seem like a lot of work, but it's just a proposition. Pacaman! 02:24, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

Also, some of the maajor locations you proposed are short enough to be merged into List of locations in A Series of Unfortunate Events. Pacaman! 02:29, 21 November 2006 (UTC)
I like your idea. How about having a "character" page (listing each character that appears in the book, those who appear only in that book would be covered there, others in more than book would link to seperate pages) and a "locations" page (listing each location in the book, locations appearing only that book would be covered there, others would link to seperate pages)? Clamster5 02:41, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

As for the template you suggest, I would suggest only the main characters would be listed. Next to each book put a link to its "characters" and "locations" pages, and list things such as V.F.D. and all pages concerning it, the various organozations, and the accompanying books. Clamster5 02:56, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

As for characters that have brief mentions in The Penultimate Peril and one other book, they do not need a seperate page. They will be covered in their original book's character page and have a link on the Penultime Peril page to that page. Clamster5 03:28, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

"Animal, Plants, and Fungi"

I propose that V.F.D. Crows, V.F.D. Eagles, and Other V.F.D. Animals be merged in V.F.D.. However, I think Lachrymose Leeches, Medusoid Mycelium, Mortmain Mountain Lions, and Snow Gnats should keep their own pages as they cannot be difinitively connected to V.F.D. Clamster5 02:56, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

UPDATE: I have merged all of the above pages into V.F.D., with the exceptions of Lachrymose Leeches, Medusoid Mycelium, and Snow Gnats. Clamster5 03:15, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

Couldn't the leeches should be merged into Lake Lachrymose, Medusoid into Gorgonian Grotto, ect? Pacaman! 04:35, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

I agree with Pacaman, we should put the leeches etc into their respective books. DanCrowter 10:36, 1 December 2006 (UTC)

The leeches and the other animals have been merged into Animals in A Series of Unfortunate Events.Clamster5 13:24, 1 December 2006 (UTC)

Template Proposal

I propose this template, per my organizational suggestions above. {{Template:ASUE/proposed2}} The pages labeled "locations" would have:

  • List of all locations in the specific book
  • All locations that first introduced in that book will be covered there completely
  • If the location appears in more than one book, the first book it is mentioned in will cover it completely, with subsequent pages linking back to it

The pages labeled "characters" would have:

  • List of all characters in the specific book
  • All characters are first introduced in that book will be covered there completely
  • If the character appears in more than one book, the first book it is mentioned in will cover it completely, with subsequent pages linking back to it

Clamster5 04:06, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

Remove the redlinks. There are too many of them, and it makes for an eyesore. bibliomaniac15 04:17, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

Part of my proposal is to create the pages the redlinks point to. Clamster5 04:27, 21 November 2006 (UTC)
I feel that the extraneous pages are unwarranted, and can be implemented in the main article instead. bibliomaniac15 04:30, 21 November 2006 (UTC)
Have you read the conversation under the heading "List of Locations"? I'm proposing to remove a large amount of character articles and location articles and replace them with pages for each book. This template is just a proposal. If you don't like the how it looks based on the color red, then please look at my above proposal again and try to understand what I think is an effiecent way to organize ASOUE pages. Clamster5 04:35, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

I thank thattemplate is awesome, except the books are a little messy. They need to be aligned up in some rows or something. Since I have to leave right now, I'll change it so you can see when I get back (if nobody tried it yet) Pacaman! 11:59, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

What do you think of the concept of "locations" and "characters" pages? It will cut down drastically on the number of character and location articles that will most likely never be more than stubs. Clamster5 14:29, 21 November 2006 (UTC)
Of course I like it... I came up with it. Wikipedia talk:WikiProject A Series of Unfortunate Events#List of locations. Pacaman! 20:34, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

I improved on your template a tiny bit at Template:ASUE/proposed3. I added the film and video game and cleaned up the books a little. Pacaman! 20:49, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

I like your template a lot. Its a little more organized than mine. Sorry I forgot you came up with the idea. Do we need a larger concencus besides me and you to change the template and make the new pages? Clamster5 00:06, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
I've created a sample "locations" page for the The Wide Window. The sample is here. Please make any changes you like to it. Clamster5 00:38, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
That looks fantastic! We don't really need a concensus, because nobody has really objected. If anyone does object, they can change it back. Also, I noted this in the above section, but Lachrymose Leeches, Medusoid Mycelium, Uncle Monty's Reptile Collection (&Mamba du Mal), and Snow Gnats could be merged into the articles with their locations. Pacaman! 04:42, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
TBB (locations) is done. Please add any more pages made to the list below, and keep the conversation above it. I will work on some more pages later. Pacaman! 05:02, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

I suggest that any locations that don't appear in the movie or in more than 1 book shouldn't have an infobox. They take up space just to say that it was first mentioned in the book. We should however keep the pictures. Clamster5 17:22, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

That's a good point, but I think making Template:ASUE place would be a better idea. It could contain more info specific to places. Name, image, first visit, revisits, location (city, what it's near), size (building floors, space), type (submarine, city, building house) as well as others could all be included. Pacaman! 18:49, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

The location pages in blue are done(please add any new page to the list and keep this list at bottom of discussion):

Unfortunate Events WikiProject obsolete?

I think that this Wikiproject, and its associated ephemera, should be changed to refer to Lemony Snicket rather than ASOUE; ASOUE is over, but Snicket's writing unrelated works, such as The Composer is Dead, and he'd already contributed several short stories and introductions that had nothing to do with the series. Placing all this under an ASOUE heading would be misleading and inaccurate. Along these lines, it's wrong to place Horseradish under "Accompanying Materials" as it isn't - it's not part of ASOUE (though, granted, it draws from it). 217.42.68.232 08:21, 10 May 2007 (UTC)

I agree with this idea. If no one objects in a few days, I'll move the project to a new name. <3Clamster 14:24, 10 May 2007 (UTC)
I concur; move it, it's got much more to do with Lemony Snicket's works now.--Orthologist 21:39, 10 May 2007 (UTC)
I'm glad you agree; in the long run, I think it'll pay off. 81.158.7.240 15:52, 11 May 2007 (UTC)
If no one objects by tomorrow, I'd be happy to move it and all its associated pages. Is anyone willing to edit templates as well? <3Clamster 22:46, 11 May 2007 (UTC)
Maybe, if I'm not feeling particularly lazy. Anyway, I don't object. Good idea. Mrmoocow 23:41, 11 May 2007 (UTC)
Should the {{ASUE}} one be changed? It's got more to do with ASOUE, but it also related to Snicket as part of the project.--Orthologist 10:31, 12 May 2007 (UTC)
Throwing a huge stack of ASOUE material onto a page for something like, say, The Composer is Dead might be misleading; would it be too much effort to rearrange things between a new Lemony Snicket box and just snip a few things off the current ASOUE box and leave that for ASOUE pages only? In the short one, just changing the existing one might be better, but in the long run, Snicket might write other novels that require concept pages and lists of characters and such. 81.158.7.240 16:19, 12 May 2007 (UTC)
The ASUE nav box is okay as it is (except maybe a little tweaking) and I think a new one should be made for Lemony Snicket, linking to all his books and writings. Also, we should create pages for his other works, like a Lump of Coal. <3Clamster 02:26, 13 May 2007 (UTC)
667 Dark Avenue has a good page with a list of all the various introductions and minor works written by Snicket and Handler. I don't know if I can link it here, though, as I think 667's blocked. 81.158.7.240 13:42, 13 May 2007 (UTC)

To-do list

I've added a to-do list back with new ideas on the A Series of Unfortunate Events article's talk page add your own if you have any ideas, and let's see if we can do anything on the to-do list! Mrmoocow 23:33, 12 May 2007 (UTC)

I'm pretty sure HarperChildren's site lists the awards each book has won on their individual pages, if there are any you're missing. As far as history goes, there's a section on the Lemony Snicket page about where Handler (really) came up with the name, but the source was removed as it was an interview transcript posted on 667.
I also keep thinking that there should be something added somewhere about the change in tone the series underwent (dark --> comedy --> meaningful dark) and all the retcons, but there probably aren't any reliable (read: scholarly) sources on that. 81.158.7.240 13:42, 13 May 2007 (UTC)

Could have told me you were renaming your project

The ad has been wrong since you did so. I have now re-done it – Gurch 19:46, 19 May 2007 (UTC)

Infoboxes

I think the infoboxes that were created for this project are incomplete and unreliable, so I propose that the standard userboxes for characters, books, and organizations be used. I've listed on the project's template page and replaced most of the character's infoboxes already. I think having these will help streamline the information put into the pages. ***Clamster 15:17, 22 May 2007 (UTC)
