Project Banner

I've improved the banner to use all the appropriate rating scales, which categorise the articles by class and importance. See Category:WikiProject Northamptonshire. Jeni (talk) 13:33, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

And now all village articles have them :) its a start! Jeni (talk) 14:53, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

All this in a few hours

Im shocked that all this is done in a few hours, thanks for the help! Likelife (talk) 15:31, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

Classing towns

With towns I not sure were to place in the imporance scale, I've done Northampton as high but not sure were Wellingborough, Kettering, Corby, Rushden, Higham Ferres should go.Likelife (talk) 15:45, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

I would suggest tagging the bigger ones as high, and the smaller ones as mid. Jeni (talk) 15:57, 4 August 2009 (UTC)
Knowing the area, I would certainly follow Jeni's advice, particularly by rating Wellingborough, Kettering, and Corby high. Rushden and Higham Ferres would probably be mid.--Kudpung (talk) 17:35, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

Yh thanks I've done that, when I moved from Wellingborough to London no one had ever hard of the place but yes it should be high.Likelife (talk) 21:02, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

Kettering

I think it would be a good idea for a couple of editors to take a special look at the Kettering page, in particular the two most recent pages of the edit history and check out any conversations on the major contributor's(s') talk page(s). It's just possible some help from the Project members may be needed. Also some random checks at the sources might be another good idea just to ascertain that they are accurate (but not too accurately reused), and that the article content is fine by guidelines on encyclopedic prose style, and MoS.--Kudpung (talk) 17:35, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

I've never seen so much history on one page, Kettering is a hard one if you look at how other towns are, like Wellingborough or Northampton it's quite diffrent, not saying to they could not be improved but I think we need a standard on all town pages so they read clear and not to confusing. One other thing about the Kettering page is when I read it I get a bit board from how much is written, not saying its not go to have alot of information but Kettering page is missing something. Likelife (talk) 11:07, 6 August 2009 (UTC)

classing railway stations

Now I quite like how some Wellingborough railway station is written (I do edit it a lot) but im not sure what class it should be in, this counts for all stations in the county which are still active.Likelife (talk) 10:59, 6 August 2009 (UTC)

Villages

Just a heads up to say not to bother adding infobox needed to village articles, I will be working through them over the next couple of weeks adding infoboxes/cords/images as I did in Worcestershire. :) Jeni (talk) 12:43, 6 August 2009 (UTC)

I added an infobox to Rushton but I can't seem to find a lot of the information. What do you generally use as a source for adding information to infoboxes? With smaller villages such as Rushton that aren't generally tourist villages, I don't seem to be able to find much. ReformatMe (talk) 10:15, 7 August 2009 (UTC)
I added the postcode and a image of Rushton Hall. Likelife (talk) 10:56, 7 August 2009 (UTC)
Don't worry too much about the infoboxes. Jeni has a knack of making and populating these and adding photos and coords. I don't know if she uses a bot or some special trick, but she does it exceptionally quickly and efficiently :) --Kudpung (talk) 03:42, 8 August 2009 (UTC)
What villages do need are External Links links to their official Civil parish website (usually a page on the District Council web site), a link to their own independent Civil Parish site (if they have one), a link to the Church parish website (if there is one), and a link to the home page of the official District Council website. These links are not refs so they don't need a 'retrieved date', but they should display as text, not as bare URLs. These websites will also often provide additional usefull background information that can be used to expand articles (if correctly cited). Links to locall football clubs, pubs, and chips shops, and list of names of all the local politicians and parish councillors, etc, are not required, and if you come across any you can happily rm them. You can also delete the names of pubs and shops in the articles if they are not notable (eg: not listed buildings etc). Many editors often contribute info in good faith that is best left on the notice board on the village green.--Kudpung (talk) 04:07, 8 August 2009 (UTC)
I've added some very minor information about the school (including ref) and pub in Rushton. I used to live there in the mid-seventies, so will unearth some books and suchlike to expand this article a little. Fortnum (talk) 12:54, 22 September 2009 (UTC)

IRC

An IRC channel may be useful for coordinating the project; however I am hesitant to start a channel and go to the effort of keeping it running if it would not be used. What do you all think? ReformatMe (talk) 15:01, 26 August 2009 (UTC)

I just registered #wikipedia-en-northants on freenode, I'm on IRC 24/7 so I'll always be there. Jeni (talk) 23:39, 26 August 2009 (UTC)
I'm on now and should also be around 24/7. ReformatMe (talk) 23:50, 27 August 2009 (UTC)

Portal

WP Northants should really have a Portal, So I'll start work on it soon.Likelife (talk) 10:13, 3 September 2009 (UTC)

Sorry Ive been away so not had much chance to start it. It will be done by the end of the week.Likelife (talk) 19:07, 13 September 2009 (UTC)

Kettering

Should Kettering be changed to class C, what do you think? Likelife (talk) 11:38, 19 September 2009 (UTC)

Infoboxes

I've been working through the alphabetical list of villages and adding infoboxes. Got to D for Dalscote so far...Bogbumper (talk) 12:55, 8 November 2009 (UTC)

OK, thank you.Likelife (talk) 15:53, 8 November 2009 (UTC)
Think they're all done now. Quite a lot didn't have them. I also found one tagged as Northamptonshire which was actually a Buckinghamshire village *shudder* ;o) Bogbumper (talk) 09:48, 2 December 2009 (UTC)

Delapre

'Delapre' or 'Delapré'? AmosWolfe (talk) yesterday moved, I think, Delapre Abbey to Delapré Abbey, and updated a number of wikilinks accordingly. Just thought I'd solicit opinions here - for my money the change oughtn't to have been made because 'Delapré' looks at best to be an anachronism. As I wrote on User:AmosWolfe's talk page, the council doesn't accent the 'e', Ordnance Survey doesn't accent the 'e', and Friends of Delapre Abbey seems to do it only in one image. Matthew (talk) 13:07, 2 December 2009 (UTC)

Edgecote or Edgcote?

Anybody have a view on whether Edgecote should be renamed Edgcote? Ordnance Survey and the parish council reckon it's spelled without the 'e'. If that's right, what's the correct way to change the name of the article? Thanks! Bogbumper (talk) 17:00, 11 December 2009 (UTC)

Northamptonshire county council [1] spell it without the 'e' as well, so I think it should be moved.Likelife (talk) 18:43, 11 December 2009 (UTC)

WP 1.0 bot announcement

This message is being sent to each WikiProject that participates in the WP 1.0 assessment system. On Saturday, January 23, 2010, the WP 1.0 bot will be upgraded. Your project does not need to take any action, but the appearance of your project's summary table will change. The upgrade will make many new, optional features available to all WikiProjects. Additional information is available at the WP 1.0 project homepage. — Carl (CBM · talk) 03:43, 22 January 2010 (UTC)

The Brackley article is in urgent need of attention.--Kudpung (talk) 23:35, 28 June 2010 (UTC)

Northamptonshire articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Northamptonshire articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.

We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

For the Wikipedia 1.0 editorial team, SelectionBot 23:24, 19 September 2010 (UTC)

Sorry I've only just noticed this - I'll try to.Likelife (talk) 15:58, 4 October 2010 (UTC)

Flag

Not sure how active this project is, but please see Talk:Northamptonshire for a long-running dispute about the county flag. TheGrappler (talk) 23:15, 15 February 2011 (UTC)

Yes, thanks I've seen it. I just completely forgot it was on the WikiProject. Likelife (talk) 18:12, 17 February 2011 (UTC)
I was just about to create a new section about this. But I found this conversation before I did. Basically this project uses a different flag for Northamptonshire than the one used in the Northamptonshire article. Which flag is the correct one? Eopsid (talk) 19:21, 30 June 2012 (UTC)

The Billing Pong

In the article on Billing, the pong is attributed to the recycling centre (i.e. the tip).

I don't suppose the sewage farm next door could be a contributing factor? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.151.196.205 (talk) 07:15, 16 March 2011 (UTC)

WikiWomen's History Month

Hi everyone. March is Women's History Month and I'm hoping a few folks here at WP:Northamptonshire will have interest in putting on events (on and off wiki) related to women's roles in Northamptonshire's history, society and culture. We've created an event page on English Wikipedia (please translate!) and I hope you'll find the inspiration to participate. These events can take place off wiki, like edit-a-thons, or on wiki, such as themes and translations. Please visit the page here: WikiWomen's History Month. Thanks for your consideration and I look forward to seeing events take place! SarahStierch (talk) 22:03, 1 February 2012 (UTC)

Please help get Northamptonshire ready for the start of the Wiki Loves Monuments competition on 1st September

In September the UK is taking part for the first time in the international photography competition Wiki Loves Monuments. Participants will be invited to submit pictures of listed buildings of significant importance (grades I or grade II*), as recorded by English Heritage. The main external website for competitors can be found here, and you can leave a message there if you have queries about competing. Do please join in, and let people in your local area know of this excellent way in which both existing and new Wiki users can help improve the encyclopaedia by contributing photographs of local listed structures. What about organizing a local Wikimeet to attract new people?

In preparation for the start of the competition on 1st September there is still quite a lot of work to do, and we would like to ask for the help of members of this wikiproject. Your local and expert knowledge will be invaluable in ensuring that the lists of eligible buildings are up to date and correctly formatted. If you look at Listed buildings in the United Kingdom you will see how many structures are included. If you then follow the link to Listed buildings in England, you can get to the detailed lists for your area. Alternatively have a look at the WLM planning table. Can you help to ensure that the lists for your area are up to date and well presented?

Some of the lists have been semi-automatically generated from data provided by English Heritage. These use pre formatted templates (eg EH header) which will make it much easier for competition participants to upload their photographs to Commons as an automated process. Please don't change the template structure, as we need to ensure that the templates are properly compatible with the WLM standards that are in use worldwide. The format will allow a bot automatically to collect the information and to put it into the international Monuments Database.

The data still needs the attention of local editors:

  • The "title" may need wikilinking to a suitable article name (whether we currently have that article or not). If there are several buildings in one street all of the wikilinks point at an article about the street; however each entry has a separate line in the list.
  • The "location" column looks and sorts better if just the parish or town is included (& wikilinked).
  • The "date completed" column sometimes has eg "C19" for 19th century, and "C1850" for c. 1850 when the date is uncertain - these need to be corrected manually.
  • The "grid ref & lat & long" (which is occasionally missing) may be given to 8 characters — only 6 (grid ref) or 5 (lat & long) are really needed.
  • Clicking on the "list entry number" should take you to the data sheet for that entry on the English Heritage database which can be checked if needed for details.
  • The image column should have a picture added if we already have a suitable image on Commons. (N.B. if you are going to be taking photos yourself for inclusion in the competition don't upload them until September)
  • References may be added according to normal WP practice.

For further information, please see Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments 2013 in the United Kingdom.

If you have any queries, please post them not below but on the Organizers' help page on Commons.

Anything you can do to help improve these lists will be much appreciated. The final deadline for cleaning up is 31st August.

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

Old maps and views of the East Midlands

As you might have seen in the Signpost last week, there's currently a drive to go through the million 19th century images released by the British Library last year, and identify all the maps, with a view to their being georeferenced by BL volunteers, and then uploaded to Commons early next year. After the first week, over eight thousand new maps have been identified, with 40% of the target books looked at -- see the status page for the latest figures, and more information.

A part that may specifically interest this project is

c:Commons:British Library/Mechanical Curator collection/Synoptic index/England - East Midlands

which currently shows pink templated links for 113 Flickr book pages still to be looked at. (Though there are lots of other parts of England, and indeed of the world, still to be looked through as well).

Any help looking through these would be very much appreciated -- as well as the maps (and ground plans) for tagging, you may well also find other interesting or useful non-map views that may be worth considering or uploading for articles on Northamptonshire and the East Midlands. (If uploading, please use the ingestion template described here, which sets up some appropriate image templates and categories).
