Closed questions for 2014 are here.

NYTM pump

The next one. This mosaic is very similar to this photo. My questions are: 1. Is this the same mosaic, rescued from the Cortlandt Street (IRT Broadway – Seventh Avenue Line) station and saved at the New York Transit Museum? 2. Is Squire J. Vickers the artist of this mosaic? Thanks in advance. Vcohen (talk) 16:27, 30 June 2014 (UTC)

They look similar, but your guess is as good as mine. ---------User:DanTD (talk) 00:52, 2 July 2014 (UTC)
Is your guess different, though? Vcohen (talk) 05:57, 2 July 2014 (UTC)

A few locations

While you're at it, I'm still trying to find a few station locations myself.
Any ideas? ---------User:DanTD (talk) 02:40, 15 May 2014 (UTC)
The first one is Grand Street - the flickr stream has a Grand Street image taken eight seconds before. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 04:49, 15 May 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for one of them, at least. Before this thread is archived though...
File:1977 M Train.jpg
Who thinks they can identify this station from 1977?

Birds

File:Whitehall St art vc.jpg

Where are these birds from? Vcohen (talk) 20:44, 12 August 2014 (UTC)

Here is a shot made from the same point, but I don't think this shot belongs to the station that the others on this page do. Vcohen (talk) 19:10, 13 August 2014 (UTC)
BMT Whitehall St. It's part of the Passages mosaic, which is linked from South Ferry – Whitehall Street (New York City Subway)#External links (image 25732 at that site is this same section of it). Not the same person as our Frank Giorgi article. DMacks (talk) 21:36, 28 November 2014 (UTC)
Thank you very much. Vcohen (talk) 21:46, 28 November 2014 (UTC)
Oops, not surprising that people with different names aren't the same person. But thanks to looking for info (and thanks for prompting me to do so), looks like he is notable, so I started Frank Giorgini:) DMacks (talk) 22:34, 28 November 2014 (UTC)
Oh, what an interesting thing may start while looking at a picture. Vcohen (talk) 23:03, 28 November 2014 (UTC)

Car model

Hello all. What car model is this? I'd like to categorize this image. Vcohen (talk) 21:56, 11 October 2014 (UTC)

This is a R160. It looks like a R160A model since the rims around the doors are not as glossy. Epicgenius (talk) 03:23, 4 November 2014 (UTC)
Thank you. Vcohen (talk) 09:35, 4 November 2014 (UTC)

Station on J train

What station is this? The photographer says "J train" and "above Broadway." Vcohen (talk) 10:29, 1 November 2014 (UTC)

It was a struggle to get my Google Maps Street View to load, but since those street name signs are for Howard Avenue, that's Gates Avenue (BMT Jamaica Line). ---------User:DanTD (talk) 11:16, 1 November 2014 (UTC)
Thank you very much. Now I see the sign. Vcohen (talk) 13:07, 1 November 2014 (UTC)

Interstate 678

I could not find where Interstate 678 meets an elevated line. Vcohen (talk) 20:05, 8 November 2014 (UTC)

That's Alabama Avenue at the beginning of its 2006-2007 renovation. The shot is from East New York Avenue looking east down Fulton. Doug Kerr names his sets after the principal highway he drove on, which in this case was I-678. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 21:15, 8 November 2014 (UTC)
Oh, that's it. Thanks a lot. Vcohen (talk) 22:45, 8 November 2014 (UTC)

Ramp

Where is this ramp? It's something ADA-accessible on the IND Sixth Avenue Line. Vcohen (talk) 19:07, 28 November 2014 (UTC)

The overhead sign on the (non-ramp) concourse to the right has an arrow pointing to B/D/F/M--yup, IND 6th Ave. Two of the mirrored columns between there and the central ramp each have an image of a sign (in reverse) "34th St". So it's Herald Square. DMacks (talk) 19:23, 28 November 2014 (UTC)
You can read! Thank you! Vcohen (talk) 19:30, 28 November 2014 (UTC)
Great. Now you should add the description to it. ---------User:DanTD (talk) 21:06, 28 November 2014 (UTC)
I renamed and categorized it, I hope it's enough. Vcohen (talk) 21:46, 28 November 2014 (UTC)

Manhattan subway entrance

What station is this? Vcohen (talk) 17:22, 4 December 2014 (UTC)

Ooh! Looks like the kind of thing you'd see at Grand Central Terminal. Of course looks can be deceiving. ---------User:DanTD (talk) 18:13, 4 December 2014 (UTC)
28th Street (IRT Lexington Avenue Line) maybe? Epicgenius (talk) 20:39, 4 December 2014 (UTC)
This is the question I just wanted to ask. Vcohen (talk) 20:48, 4 December 2014 (UTC)
It definitely looks like the downtown-bound entrance/exit between 26th and 27th Street. Epicgenius (talk) 21:16, 4 December 2014 (UTC)
So basically, that puts it inside the New York Life Building? That's not Midtown, but it's not unreasonable either. ---------User:DanTD (talk) 21:42, 4 December 2014 (UTC)
When trying to ID flickr images, always look at the nearby images in the stream. The EXIF data shows that the photographer was in front of GCT less than a minute before the mystery images is taken, so it's definitely at GCT. Very likely one of the entrances from 42nd Street. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 23:23, 4 December 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for the correction. It still looks like the 28th Street entrance though. Epicgenius (talk) 03:14, 5 December 2014 (UTC)
I am trying to google examples of the GCT interior with this kind of ceilings and lamps... Vcohen (talk) 06:00, 5 December 2014 (UTC)

GCT decoration

What are the names of these decorations above many of the doorways? This one is just to the west side of Junior's in the food court.

While we're bringing up the subject of items that may or may not be at Grand Central Terminal, I just have to ask about a common architectural feature at the station. ---------User:DanTD (talk) 02:10, 7 December 2014 (UTC)

Is it a pediment? Vcohen (talk) 08:23, 8 December 2014 (UTC)
Looks right to me. I'm going to bring the issue up over there. ---------User:DanTD (talk) 18:42, 8 December 2014 (UTC)

Split proposal

Definitely one section should not be getting most the traffic of this page. Our thoughtful friend User:Vcohen kindly made, a few months ago, Commons:Category:Unidentified locations in the New York City Subway and its talk page is empty. I propose moving this section there, and making separate sections for each discussed picture when it gets new words. Jim.henderson (talk) 20:00, 6 December 2014 (UTC)

I don't see why we can't make it a sub-section of the WP:NYPT page, like the Images Needed pages, and the Participants page, Naming conventions page, etcetera. We should also add a please do not delete this category tag to it. ---------User:DanTD (talk) 22:18, 6 December 2014 (UTC)
All righty. Makes little difference to me. I've been busy with real life (and less busy with a real death) but hope to get around to it in a few days unless you or someone else beats me to implementing your plan or someone objects. Jim.henderson (talk) 02:36, 14 December 2014 (UTC)
I prefer to leave this discussion here. It will have much more users watching it and able to answer here than on commons. However, I will try to split the discussion into several smaller ones, so old answered questions can be archived. Vcohen (talk) 10:58, 14 December 2014 (UTC)
Done. The idea is to move closed questions to other sections by their closing month. Vcohen (talk) 11:12, 14 December 2014 (UTC)
