Active?

Is anything happening here? I've never been involved with a Wikiproject before, what should I be doing? Unschool (talk) 01:20, 24 January 2008 (UTC)

IDK, this project seems to be dormant. RC-0722 communicator/kills 20:57, 3 February 2008 (UTC)
Yes, it was until we get enough members. Now that we have enough members, we can start! DiligentTerriertalk |sign here 19:36, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

I don't really know much—well, actually, I don't know anything—about this sort of thing, but it just seems to me that we should only have one of these userboxes. I vote for the old one, on purely aesthetic grounds. Unschool (talk) 23:03, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

I really don't care which one we use. Either one works for me. Burner0718 JibbaJabba! 01:56, 21 February 2008 (UTC)
How about we have both an d each member can choose the one they want. Zginder (talk) (Contrib) 13:41, 21 February 2008 (UTC)
Actually after checking the transclusions of our userboxes, I've seen they seem to be split pretty equally between users. Some, including me, use both. Burner0718 JibbaJabba! 16:39, 21 February 2008 (UTC)

I completely understand what Unschool is saying, and he/she has a good point. At this time, however, I think that we need to just put this issue on hold for a few days, and work on getting this project started. But please remember that I'm not saying right now that Unschool is right or wrong ... and as I said before, I think that Unschool does have a very good point, and it should definitely be re-addressed later once we get more users. It is great to see that there is finally some interaction going on between our members. DiligentTerrier and friends —Preceding comment was added at 20:11, 21 February 2008 (UTC) I am also in Wikiproject Education and their userbox looks similar to the older one so I can not use it. I like the picture in the old one though so I use a combination. Zginder (talk) (Contrib) 00:26, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

Recruiting users

Very shortly, I will be creating a custom template message that we can paste on the talk pages of those who are homeschooled. I have a list of Wikipedia users who are homeschooled, and once I get this set-up, I will need some people to help me notify these homeschoolers about this project. Would anyone be willing to help? DiligentTerrier and friends —Preceding comment was added at 20:11, 21 February 2008 (UTC)

Update: I'm working on them now. They will be posted at Wikipedia:WikiProject Homeschooling/Invitations. DiligentTerrier and friends 20:37, 21 February 2008 (UTC)
Done Let's start recruiting members! DiligentTerrier and friends 21:38, 21 February 2008 (UTC)
I agree this can be put off until we get more members. BTW, I'll help with some of the recruiting. Burner0718 JibbaJabba! 18:13, 22 February 2008 (UTC)
Sounds great! Let me know which group of users you will recruit. Can you start today? By the way, what do you think of my new templates? (See the sidebar on the main page and Template:WikiProject Homeschooling.) DiligentTerrier and friends 19:12, 22 February 2008 (UTC)
I think I'll help with homeschoolers and interested homeschoolers. The templates are nice. Yes, I can start today. Burner0718 JibbaJabba! 22:03, 22 February 2008 (UTC)
That's great. Hopefully we can get some more users! Do you have the list? DiligentTerrier and friends 22:05, 22 February 2008 (UTC)
No, I don't have the list. Burner0718 JibbaJabba! 22:15, 22 February 2008 (UTC)

The lists that I have found so far follow. There may be some people who are on more than one list, so I'd be careful that they don't receive duplicate invitations. Here are the templates used for recruiting members. DiligentTerrier and friends 22:18, 22 February 2008 (UTC)

Some serious issues regarding Wikipedia:Canvassing#Excessive_cross-posting here - Wikipedia is not a free-for-all promotional vehicle for WikiProjects. People should be able to find the project from the project banner or userboxes on participants' pages, or from articles being developed (something I'm not actually seeing much of over here.) Orderinchaos 09:08, 18 March 2008 (UTC)
Obviously you haven't seen our Collaboration of the Month nominations and improvements on those articles. DiligentTerrier and friends 16:19, 18 March 2008 (UTC)

Cross-Wiki Project

It would be great if this group could also focus its attention on other corners of the WMF empire, such as Wikisource You'll notice s:Wikisource:Works has a number of wide-reaching indexes, including s:Wikisource:Education. I think it would be great if I could have some support from this WikiProject to help copy over historically-important texts related to homeschooling, such as the works of Charlotte Mason. If you're interested in helping, sign up for an account and let me know, I'll try to help you. Sherurcij (Speaker for the Dead) 00:05, 23 February 2008 (UTC)

Great! Can you become a member? You seem to know a lot about homeschooling. DiligentTerriertalk |sign here 20:29, 23 February 2008 (UTC)
I prefer to do my part to ensure that Membership is not just a token armband, but first do my part to help with the project in ways I wouldn't otherwise be editing Wiki. Assuming the group is accomplishing a great deal in a few weeks, I'll probably join formally. For now I'm going to try and pull a list together - and may I add as one of my first requests, that somebody get a nice photograph of some of those antique desks sitting in a kitchen like I've seen in so many HS families? It'd look great for the article. Sherurcij (Speaker for the Dead) 23:59, 23 February 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, you might want to start by adding a photo request template on the talk page of the homeschooling article. DiligentTerriertalk |sign here 23:15, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

I have added sources for the eTexts of each of Mason's works at s:Author:Charlotte Marie Mason, and would appreciate if each of you reading this would take the time to add just one of those works to the project. If you have any questions, I'd be happy to help. Sherurcij (Speaker for the Dead) 00:44, 29 February 2008 (UTC)

Images

Whether for templates, banners or articles, here are the (few) freely-licensed homeschooling images I've found, I'm uploading them to my newly-created Category:Homeschooling on Commons.

WikiProject Merger proposal

There has been a proposal at WikiProject Alternative education regarding a WikiProject merger. Members of either project are encouraged to comment. DiligentTerrier and friends 18:03, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

Assessments

Hey, I was wondering if this project was going to start getting WP1.0 Assessments starting any time soon (eg. here). I dont have the technical know-how of how on earth to make it work, but I am keen to start an assessment department for WP:HOME, and assess articles for the project, as ive done for WP:SCH, WP:EDU, and WP:EiA. Thanks. Twenty Years 16:50, 14 March 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, and actually that was just what I was trying to do when I noticed you posted this here. There's actually a robot that goes around to the categories and assesses them. Here's what I've setup so far: Template:WikiProject Homeschooling. You can see the links to some of the categories there, and it looks as though someone else was trying to set it up. We might have one of those templates and not even know it! Well, not really sure how to do all this with the categories and stuff. Maybe we should leave a message on behalf of the project at the Version 1.0 Editorial Team talk page? DiligentTerrier and friends 19:14, 14 March 2008 (UTC)
OK, here is what we have so far. DiligentTerrier and friends 21:13, 14 March 2008 (UTC)
Looks good. Do we have an assessments team? Twenty Years 16:27, 17 March 2008 (UTC)
I want to encourage all assessors to also mark the class for WikiProject Education on any article that is in both projects. The importance needs to be left to that WikiProject though. Zginder (talk) (Contrib) 17:12, 17 March 2008 (UTC)
We should only do that if we are part of their assessments team, I think. Maybe I'll join so I can. Good idea. DiligentTerrier and friends 17:15, 17 March 2008 (UTC)
I do not want to make a big deal about this, but the article class should be independent of the WikiProject. Zginder (talk) (Contrib) 21:33, 17 March 2008 (UTC)

OK, here is all of what I was able to get started:

Hopefully the bot will continue to update it. DiligentTerrier and friends 17:14, 17 March 2008 (UTC)

As Homeschooling is a sub-project of Education, articles should NOT be tagged with both projects. If the project is within the scope of homeschooling, it shouldn't have an education tag on it. Twenty Years 17:34, 17 March 2008 (UTC)
It does if the article is more important to us than to them. Zginder (talk) (Contrib) 17:37, 17 March 2008 (UTC)

Positions of members

Im just curious as to how people become into positions such as lead co-ordinato, and assistant co-ordinator. How do these people get into the position, and how can they be removed? The system reeks of improving ones image and downright ownership of the project. Twenty Years 07:42, 18 March 2008 (UTC)

I am in general agreement. There is no need for a project structure when the project has less than 60 articles and as yet no FAs/GAs. Orderinchaos 07:49, 18 March 2008 (UTC)
I have removed the section on the grounds of the above conerns. Twenty Years 07:50, 18 March 2008 (UTC)
Milhist has elections - and if you see the size and way to seeps into every corner of wikipedia - you can understand why - homeschooling dosnt require it is obvious SatuSuro 08:40, 18 March 2008 (UTC)

Collaboration of the Month

Can we have some participation at the collaboration of the month page, please? - DiligentTerrier and friends 18:54, 19 March 2008 (UTC)

I have created this page: Wikipedia:WikiProject Homeschooling/Collaboration/current Wich simply lists the name of the current collaboration. I did this so I could add it to the community, which I have done. Zginder (talk) (Contrib) 20:46, 19 March 2008 (UTC)
I would propose Distance Education, currently at start class, with a view towards getting it to B-Class or GA. Twenty Years 03:37, 24 March 2008 (UTC)

WP:HOME

Not sure if this has been made obvious enough to all members. WP:HOME doesnt direct to this page anymore, as it says in the March newsletter, it redirects to the mainpage. Thanks. Twenty Years 03:38, 24 March 2008 (UTC)

Joining

Hi there, I am taught at home and would like to join this project, any help please? BenjaminTeague123456 —Preceding unsigned comment added by BenjaminTeague123456 (talkcontribs) 22:47, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

Project Main Page

Id made a good 20 edits here, making additions to the project page. So im asking here;

  • What are the projects goals? Both general and specific?
  • What departments are there in the project, do we have article development, assessment, collaboration or any other departments? and do they deserve a mention on the projects main page?
  • Do people know what quality homeschooling articles are around, as to use those articles as a guide in article development? Should this be mentioned on the project main page?
  • Why do we not have a link to our parent, sister and daughter projects on the project main page?

I feel these things are quite essential in developing this project, and ensuring that we can attract new participants. I have informed some members of the project as to this discussion. Thanks. Twenty Years 07:03, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

I've looked at the changes made - they are definitely consistent with other successful projects presently around, and it goes without saying that in order to grow, focussing attention on what the project can achieve is vital, so that everybody knows what they're doing and where they fit in with everybody else working on the same things. Orderinchaos 09:32, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
personally I liked it the way it was. Also, TY, don't canvass. Kimu 15:28, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
Yep, ive canvassed you and DT - people ive been in recent disagreements - makes alot of sense. This isnt about the changes ive made, its about setting up goals and departments for the project. Thanks. Twenty Years 15:33, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
No, you have canvassed, and you know it. :) - DiligentTerrier and friends 15:35, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
=D What are your thoughts on having project goals? Ive seen it done on WP:WA, which is a REALLY good wikiproject. Thoughts? Twenty Years 15:48, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
Sounds like a good idea, possibly. I just don't understand why you had the subpages deleted and all that. - DiligentTerrier and friends 15:53, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
We can discuss the various sub-pages a bit later. I think having project goals would just provide a better direction for the project, currently its direction isnt well defined. ive created a sub-section below with some ideas for goals. Twenty Years 15:56, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
Can you vote and/or nominate at the collaboration of the month page? I would like to have a nomination done there so I can include it in the next newsletter. - DiligentTerrier and friends 16:00, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
Ive done so above, i nominated Alternative education i think? Twenty Years 16:07, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
Sorry, i nomd Distance Education. Twenty Years 16:17, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

Project Goals

Here are some ideas for project goals:

Works for me - DiligentTerrier and friends 16:05, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
Ill add these to the main project page tentatively. Thanks. Twenty Years 16:07, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
I'm also going to nominate Homeschooling for GA status, if you think its ready. - DiligentTerrier and friends 16:13, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
It reads reasonably well, but it just needs a few more references. Might be worth going through peer review first, to see what problems other people have with the article. Thanks. Twenty Years 16:17, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
I just added the map that Zginder made with a legend template. I am going to work on updating the map. - DiligentTerrier and friends 16:34, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
(reduce indent) Per discussing getting Homeschooling to GA, ive added it as a specific goal of the project. Thanks. Twenty Years 17:58, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

Assessment / Scope

The lead section of the project mentions bits from both Scope and Assessment. Can we separate the sections, so that the scope has its own section, and Assessment has its own section, with a link to the sub-page, with the WP 1.0 table included aswell. Thoughts? Twenty Years 16:12, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

I'd rather see them all together. It makes more sense to me. - DiligentTerrier and friends 16:13, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
Can we move the assessment table from the sidebar to the lead section then? Twenty Years 16:18, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
It won't display correctly on small screens if that is done. - DiligentTerrier and friends 16:32, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
Ah ok, i must have a big screen then. Fair point. Twenty Years 16:42, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

See Also

Note that this has been manually done on the project main page. Have converted it to use the see also template. basically does the same thing, just a bit more aesthetic. Thanks. Twenty Years 16:22, 28 March 2008 (UTC) http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia%3AWikiProject_Homeschooling&diff=201602990&oldid=201537853

OK, so far I agree with everything you've done in these two edits. - DiligentTerrier and friends 16:33, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

Similar WikiProjects

Can we have a section, right at the bottom of the project page, which has links to other related wikiprojects. Eg. WikiProject Education, WP Schools, WP Alternative Education etc? Thoughts? Twenty Years 16:27, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

That might make sense if the other similar projects agree to do the same. - DiligentTerrier and friends 16:36, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
It has been done on WP:EDU for ages, just added it to Alternative Education aswell. Ive added it to the project main page. Twenty Years 16:41, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

What the heck is a "Brother" project? Sherurcij (Speaker for the Dead) 16:59, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

Ive only ever seen it said as Sister project, they seem like close substitutes to me? Twenty Years 17:01, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
Well, if the two projects got along like sisters, then we could honestly say that, but with sarcastic comments like this one (link), I think "brother" projects would make more sense. - DiligentTerrier and friends 17:41, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
As a major contributor to WikiProject Education and WikiProject Alternative Education, and participant in this one, i think between the 3 projects, we can all work together in a friendly manner :) Cheers. Twenty Years 17:44, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

Departments

Can we create a section on the main project page, which has sub-sections for each department of WP Homeschooling, eg. Collaboration? Thoughts? Twenty Years 16:47, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

I would like to see the Collaboration section and the Articles section next to each other, which would mean the "News" section would have to be moved up or down. - DiligentTerrier and friends 17:49, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
Moved news up one. Also renamed "Collaboration of the Month" to "Collaboration". Thanks. Twenty Years 17:52, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
Can we rename "WikiProject Homeschooling News" to simply "News"? Twenty Years 17:52, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
Works for me, and the other edit you mentioned was what I was going to do. :) - DiligentTerrier and friends 17:54, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
Done. Twenty Years 17:57, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

Articles

Can we create an articles section on the project main page. This section will have sub-sections for "Quality articles" (FA's & GA's), "Templates" (so that its mentioned on the project page, not just the sidebar) "Adopt an article" (already exists) and "Assistance requied" (this will alert project members to homeschooling articles that need attentin). This seems pretty complex, but its done on some pretty successful projects. Thoughts? Twenty Years 16:52, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

If youd like to see me add it first, and you can revert it if you dont agree with it? Thanks. Twenty Years 16:52, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
Ive added the articles section, feel free to revert if you dont think it is suitable. Thanks. Twenty Years 17:07, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

Not sure I like those articles at the top of the page. Perhaps we can like to: Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Homeschooling articles by quality ? - DiligentTerrier and friends 17:09, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

That would be a good link to have on the assessments sub-page. Twenty Years 17:19, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
Are you are aware of these pages? April 2008, March 2008. You said you nominated Distance Education, but I don't see it there. - DiligentTerrier and friends 17:11, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
Ahh, wasnt aware of those pages, mentioned it in one of the above discussions. Ive added my support on the April page for Tim Tebow (read the article - seems pretty good). Thanks. Twenty Years 17:19, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, Tebow has a lot to do with homeschooling; I'm assuming you read the "Effect on the Homeschooling movement" section. We would try to expand that. - DiligentTerrier and friends 17:42, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
So, the collaboration will only focus on that aspect of his life, or would it concentrate on his entire article? Twenty Years 17:46, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
Both, actually, but we would work a lot on expanding that section. Also, I'm not sure you can vote if you're not a member. Do you want to re-join? - DiligentTerrier and friends 17:47, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
(reduce indent) Done. Twenty Years 17:55, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

Just noticed this and this, and kind of got a kick out of the fact someone nominated it for deletion a while back. - DiligentTerrier and friends 17:58, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

Getting the article to GA/FA would be a pretty easy way to show them up :) Twenty Years 18:02, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
Perhaps you mean shut them up? - DiligentTerrier and friends 18:09, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
=D Twenty Years 18:26, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
Really...what did you mean? - DiligentTerrier and friends 18:32, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
Make them look silly for AfDing the article. Twenty Years 18:34, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
Oh, so you meant shut them up - DiligentTerrier and friends 18:40, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles. Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. This scheme should allow the team to start producing offline selections for your project and the wider community within the next year. Thanks for using the Wikipedia 1.0 scheme! For the 1.0 Editorial Team, §hepBot (Disable) 21:44, 4 July 2008 (UTC)

Anyone interested is invited to comment on / edit these two articles. Thanks! --TrustTruth (talk) 23:23, 18 July 2008 (UTC)

Wikipedia 0.7 articles have been selected for Homeschooling

Wikipedia 0.7 is a collection of English Wikipedia articles due to be released on DVD, and available for free download, later this year. The Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team has made an automated selection of articles for Version 0.7. We would like to ask you to review the articles selected from this project. These were chosen from the articles with this project's talk page tag, based on the rated importance and quality. If there are any specific articles that should be removed, please let us know at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.7. You can also nominate additional articles for release, following the procedure at Wikipedia:Release Version Nominations. A list of selected articles with cleanup tags, sorted by project, is available. The list is automatically updated each hour when it is loaded. Please try to fix any urgent problems in the selected articles. A team of copyeditors has agreed to help with copyediting requests, although you should try to fix simple issues on your own if possible. We would also appreciate your help in identifying the version of each article that you think we should use, to help avoid vandalism or POV issues. These versions can be recorded at this project's subpage of User:SelectionBot/0.7. We are planning to release the selection for the holiday season, so we ask you to select the revisions before October 20. At that time, we will use an automatic process to identify which version of each article to release, if no version has been manually selected. Thanks! For the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial team, SelectionBot 22:37, 15 September 2008 (UTC)

Deletion and school projects

I see I posted this at the wrong wikiproject Deletion of teacher assigned projects Kopachuk Middle School...there has been a reply to whit that the student in order to meet his teacher's pre-requisite had to use user space rather than article space. Why invite teachers and students to learn and write articles on wikipedia if they are deleted? It seems moot. SriMesh | talk 16:51, 19 October 2008 (UTC)

Here is another school project where the teacher has asked the kids to write about local Edmonton bands which got speedy deleted, and the kids are giving up and asking why bother with the teacher's assignment if they won't stay on wikipedia. band article deletion The articles created at this Unannoucned class project for the most part survived AFD, and they received help from various wikipedians about manual of style to help them through the AFD nominations.
