This is slightly off the topic above (Kadru) but is worth mentioning. If you see the babel on my user page, you may notice I have decent Italian. I've seen the Italian Ganesha article and it's not only featured but has lots of info which I can get off it. I translated one section (Iconography) and am planning to do the whole thing. It wont be a complete rewrite, I'll any good info here which isn't there. There are also more pics of Ganesha there. But the level of Italian is pretty hard, so it will take some time. I've created a short Kadru article, based on one source. The German article interestingly, says she symbolises the earth and Vinata the heavens. But it is all unreferenced there. Vettam Mani can be difficult to make sense of as well. Imc 19:40, 20 January 2006 (UTC)

Dashavatara

Can we change the dashavatara template to this one in my sandbox. And then put it on the top of the page so that it comes up as a right panel. If it is on the bottom, it is almost invisible. Your comments? - Ganeshk 03:00, 7 January 2006 (UTC)- Not applicable anymore

On more question. Can Buddha be removed from the list. As far I know, no Hindu text says he was part of the dashavatara. He is widely believed to be a avatar though. And the count comes to 11. - Ganeshk 03:04, 7 January 2006 (UTC)

Only thing I know about Buddha is that he was mentioned as an avatar in the Bhagavata Purana. WHy don't add yourself to the list of participants?--Dangerous-Boy 09:34, 7 January 2006 (UTC)

Puranas

Of the 18 puranas, only 3 have articles (stubs). For the others, there is absolutely no information on wikipedia. deeptrivia 02:28, 16 November 2005 (UTC)

New related WikiProject

The WikiProject Zoroastrianism has just recently been started. I've linked this WikiProject as related, whether or not people feel it is important or related enough to link back is up to the members here. A lot of Gods and concepts overlap, and on some pages I have noticed there is confusion on the Persian variant - and I myself have needed help on the Vedic counterpart. For this reason, I think inter-coordination to some extent could be mutually beneficial perhaps. Although; again, this is a spankin' brand new project. Just a heads up. Query- Difference between Hinduism and Hindu mythology

Even though I recently joined the project, I still don’t know the exact differences between the Hinduism and Hindu mythology projects. Does Hindu mythology just focus on Deities and texts? DaGizza^{Chat ©} 03:48, 25 January 2006 (UTC)

Yeah. Mostly focuses on the dieties and for the texts, it mostly focuses on the epics and the puranas. I was wondering how to make that more clear on the front page. The whole cat is unorganized. The Hinduism project focuses on the rest of the stuff like ethics and concepts, etc. right now, I'm trying to move any hindu diety articles under the hindu myth cat into the hindu dieties cat. any help would be appreciated. --Dangerous-Boy 08:15, 25 January 2006 (UTC)

confused on what are dieties and gods?

All of these are races of what one could call "demigods". I don't know what Astomi is, Apsarases are nymphs or celestial dancers at the court of Indra whom he sometimes sends to distract sages from their austerities to stop them gaining too much power. Notable among them is Urvasi who was the lover of Pururavas and therefore progenitor of the Kuru race. Because Urvasi was his ancestor, Arjuna (while he was in swarga visiting Indra) refused to sleep with her and she cursed him to lose his manhood, although Indra later intervened and said that Arjuna could choose when this happened and that he would regain it after a year. I think that Chiranjeevin just means immortal, Ganas are the servants of Shiva, Nagas are the children of Kadru and therefore half-siblings to the Adityas, who are gods. Vanaras are just monkeys. Gandharvas are just another class of demigods, amongst whom were King Chitrasena who humiliated Duryodhana and the Vedic Visvavasu (a suitor of the Sun's daughter) as are Yakshas and their female counterparts, Yakshinis or Yakshis. --Grammatical error 14:17, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

I'm not sure if Ganas can really be classified as a race, and chiranjeevin is too generic. The rest are all different non-human races, although Yakshas and Yakshinis/ Yakshis should be classified as one race.

rename Hindu demons to Asura

No because not all demons are Asuras (eg Ravana and other Rakshasas) and not all Asuras are demons (eg Varuna, Mitra etc).--Grammatical error 18:19, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

The term demon is western, and does not transfer accurately, so the correct term should be used whenever possible. As Grammatical error says, asuras cannot be consistently considered as demons. While I don't have the sources to back this up to hand, I suspect that rakshasa cannot always be so treated either. Articles such as Mahishasura which says "Mahishasura was an asura, which means a demon" presumably add the explanation to aid people who don't know what an asura is; but the link to the asura article should be sufficient, and this has a better explanation of asura, including the pithy if rather simplified "power-seeking deities". Personally, I pronounce the v like an English w, but it would apparently be very slightly different if one were to pronounce Sanskrit meticulously and v is used in IAST. The IPA is /ʋ/, a Labiodental approximant (I think). --Grammatical error 19:17, 6 May 2006 (UTC)

I've recently discovered that I do pronounce "v" as a labiodental approximant (and this is the standard and historical pronunciation in most Indian languages) - the sound produced is just so close to /w/ that I didn't realise. Therefore Ikshvaku does not equal Ikshwaku, although many people probably wouldn't notice the difference. --Grammatical error 16:06, 11 July 2006 (UTC)

Wikiproject Missing encyclopedic articles

Greetings WikiProject Hindu Mythology! I'm part of another Wikiproject, Wikipedia:WikiProject Missing encyclopedic articles. I'm not sure if there's been any kind of official or unofficial inter-Wikiproject cooperation between our two projects, or if there's been any contact at all in the past, but I thought I'd come here anyways and say 'hi', and talk a little bit about the project. WikiProject Missing Encyclopedic Articles' essentially goal is to help Wikipedia become better than any other encyclopedia/major repository of information, by including articles on every topic in any other encyclopedia/major repository of information. A lot of the project focusses on things like the Encylopedia Brittanica, Columbia, Gutenberg authors, etc, but the section I thought might interest you guys is the Hotlist of Mythology & Folklore. It began with a list of 17,346 articles, and it's now down to 7,678 (56% done). It includes all types of mythology, including a fair bit of Hindu mythology. I bet if we got some input from you guys, who actually know something about mythology, we could make a serious dent in what's left. Kali-Demon, Overlord of Kali-Yuga--Comments?

Sometime ago, I wrote a small page on Kali (Demon), not to be confused with the Goddess. Kali is the overlord of Kali Yuga and the nemesis of Kalki, Vishnu's 10th and final Avatar. All of my info came from an english translation of the Kalki Purana. I would like some feedback on the page (constuctive or otherwise). Plus, I would also like to see other people share the information they have about it. I wrote this because I figured not everyone knew about the article. Bakasura

According to an english translation of the Kalki Purana, Kali's generals Koka and Vikoka are the twin sons of Bakasura. Now I've found two different Bakasuras in Hindu mythology:

1) The underling of Kamsa. This one attacked young Krishna in the form of a huge crane Demon. He died at Krishna's hand.

2) The brother of Kirmira (किर्मीर). This Bakasura (बक) was a Rakshasa who died at the hands of Bhima during the exile of the Pandavas.

The Kalki Purana does not elaborate on which Bakasura this is. I'm writing a small book based on this Purana and I need to know which one this is. Its kind of hard since both lived during the time of Krishna.

The Purana also states "The Twins" were grandsons of Shakuni, the uncle of the Kaurava King Duryodhana. Duryodhana is an avatar of the Kali (Demon) and Shakuni is an avatar of Dwarpa, the personification of Dwarpa Yuga. This means the four are related. I've done some searching and as far as I know, Shakuni only had the one son, Uluk or Ulook. Now my question is, how does Bakasura fit into this? I think the Bakasura in question could be #1 on the above list. But I don't know 100%. Neither of these Bakasuras are related to Duryodhana or Shakuni. Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. A Sincere Request for References to Original Texts

I appreciate this great emerging resource that feeds my interest in gaining a deeper understanding of Hinduism and its mythology. That said. I like to raise a sincere request: I find Hindu mythology inherently bewildering, because of the many imprecise distinctions between various names for the same deity and equations of different deities in different periods, writing, regions, etc. This seems to be a huge uncharted territory of critical reseach activity. As a starter, I would request that this project begin to insert references to original scripture in which any attribute, relation, or equivalent name of a deity is supported. This will be hard work, but without it all the hard work that you are already doing is at risk of violating Wikipedia principles of verifiability and would all need to be flagged. Thank you.
