Task Force

Hey mrcrabby- Don't you think that this WikiProject would be better as a task force of WikiProject North Carolina? Durham only has about 3 dozen pages-we could work under the NC administrators and they could do the boring stuff while we just edited the Durham pages. Jonwilliamsl 20:13, 11 March 2007 (UTC)

Im new, I want to add a Civil Rights/AFAM History section

I am a history major from UNC and a life long resident of Durham. I wrote a 20 page research thesis paper on the history of Civil Rights in Durham. I want to contribute a section on Durham's rich history of civil rights and long standing black middle class. Durham has historically been noted on the highest national level for this black middle class, "black wall street," and social action both radical and moderate. W.E.B. Du Bois and Booker T Washington both visited and wrote directly about Durham's black population. Malcom X and Martin Luther King, jr also both visited and spoke to crowds in Durham, some of which has been photographocally documented. Scope

    • So, after 12 days, you unilaterally decided that you were going to lump a city of 250,000 in with nearby cities which have almost zero cultural, social and political ties, aside from being relatively close, geographically? Durham's history and culture is significantly different that that of Raleigh and Cary (and for that matter Chapel Hill and Carrboro).       • If nobody objects within a reasonable time frame, then yes, I will take a "unilateral" action as there is no opposition. It is called "being bold" - There is also the saying "speak up, or forever hold your peace" - although consensus is not forever, understand that when someone proposes something, and there is no opposition presented, the person will go through with his request.

      • "In fact, many Durhamites bristle at the way in which the Bull City and its cultural heritage is frequently lumped-in with (or outright assimilated by) the City of Oaks, 45 minutes to our east." - Many cities have unique heritages. The problem is, having it restricted to Durham makes the scope too small to be feasible. You need enough people to make a project worth it. Let's say you decide that the project only covers Durham, and you are the only person interested in the project. Okay, so it is a one man wikiproject for awhile. Then either you lose interest, or you decide that you need to be focusing time on family, or you get a new job that needs more time, or you die unexpectedly. Then what? The project is dead.
      • The US government clearly classifies the Raleigh, Durham, and Cary area into one combined metropolitan area. It is not worth it to try to make this Durham only. It is not sustainable that way. You have to include the entire metropolitan area. All of it. So you talk about Durhamites who "bristle at the way in which the Bull City and its cultural heritage is frequently lumped-in with (or outright assimilated by) the City of Oaks" - they should accept that they cannot man one WikiProject alone, so they should swallow their pride and ally with the Raleighites.
      • Many regional Wikiprojects include stories cities with unique histories and place them in together. Galveston, Texas is also a very historic and important city in Texas history. But now it is a part of the Houston area, so the Houston WikiProject handles all matters related to Galveston.

Clarification of terms: The Metropolitan Statistical Area is Durham, Orange, Person and Chatham counties. The CSA (Combined Statistical Area) is made up of 8 counties http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Carolina_census_statistical_areas. That's a fairly arbitrary grouping in this context (broad range of topics, differing for each city). US Collaboration reactivated & Portal:United States starting next

Casliber recently posted a suggestion on the talk page for WikiProject United States about getting the US Wikipedians Collaboration page going again in an effort to build up articles for GA through FA class. See Wikipedia:U.S. Wikipedians' notice board/USCOTM. After several days of work from him the page is up and ready for action. A few candidates have already been added for you to vote on or you can submit one using the directions provided. If you are looking for inspiration here is a link to the most commonly viewed articles currently under the scope of Wikiproject United States. There are tons of good articles in the various US related projects as well so feel free to submit any article relating to US topics (not just those under the scope of WPUS). This noticeboard is intended for ‘’’All’’’ editors working on US subjects, not just those under WPUS.

The next item I intend to start updating is Portal:United States if anyone is interested in helping. Again this is not specific to WPUS and any help would be greatly appreciated to maximize visibility of US topics. The foundation has already been established its just a matter of updating the content with some new images, biographies and articles.
