Suggestion - page on roads and streets of Shenzhen

[edit]

Hi,

Since there is no information - wiki or otherwise (in English) on the roads / streets and avenues of Shenzhen, I have made a few pages on Wanghai road, etc.

However, I am not sure if the information and citations available are sufficient to justify one page per road. I wonder if we should instead have one page (Roads / Streets / Avenues of Shenzhen?) with one paragraph and photo for each road / street / avenue? Do you feel that is a good idea?

Option A : One single page - Roads of Shenzhen (as done in Streets of Albany, New York and List of numbered streets in Manhattan)

Or (Option B) shall we currently continue to make independent pages for each road / street and subsequently combine / merge them if required?

With Option B, we can also have one single page titles "Roads of Shenzhen" in which all the names of Option A (with wikilinks) can be included. This style has been used for [[List of eponymous streets in New York City|List of eponymous streets in New York City]. Notthebestusername (talk) 03:35, 8 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Just an added note - I just noticed that many independent wiki pages on streets are not very long so Option B is not as bad an idea as I earlier thought (See the wiki page on Albert Embankment, London). However, Option A does have the added advantage of "all information under one roof". I welcome your thoughts on this. Notthebestusername (talk) 03:38, 8 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the suggestion Notthebestusername! Yes! I think it'd be better to create a summary page for a list of roads in Shenzhen (Option B) rather than creating individual pages, with the exception of maybe a few of the larger expressways and trunk roads (eg the ones I previously created:Shennan Road, Beihuan Boulevard (by the way I have no idea whatsoever why these major roads are named Boulevards, I presume the word is in French or Italian and is very occasionally used!) etc. )
To list just a few reasons:
1. Among the guidelines of Wikipedia there's one concerning the Notability of pages--so obviously this website usually wouldn't accept short pages that are not usually visited about a rather trivial matter. Most streets in Shenzhen are newly constructed, there aren't many notable sites around and the etymology are rather straightforward (especially when you understand Chinese), not to mention how complex a road name like "Yueliangwan Boulevard" can be to an ordinary person using the website...so I don't think they will pay much attention to the individual roads...
2.There are very limited resources on the Internet to provide references. For instance if you would scroll over some of the Shenzhen-related articles I created or edited, many of my references are in Chinese (because there aren't much, if any, in English). Also, with prior experiences in editing roads and streets of other city (mostly Hong Kong), I found that the Web Engine searches for Shenzhen roads are largely unreliable.
3.It would be massive work to build individual pages...I presume you understand this--especially here on Wikipedia primary researches are not welcomed.
Again thanks for your suggestion and your kind help and support in editing Shenzhen articles! I am also leaving messages on some other Shenzhen users' talk pages inviting them to join the project, so lets see how it goes!

Hi, Wishds, I agree with the point you have made. I'll make a page called "Roads of Shenzhen", and include all the roads in it. For ease of reference, I suggest we put it in alphabetical order, under the headings of districts. I guess long and large roads such as Nanhai boulevard and Wanghai road will subsequently end up with their own pages.
I think the boulevard part maybe typically Shenzhen and perhaps a few other cities in China. I don't think Tianjin has many boulevards. On the other hand, Tianjin also has fewer 街,路 and 大道 while in Shenzhen, for roads and streets to have these suffixes is so common.
Regarding referencing, I agree. While English language referencies are more convenient and preferable where the choice exists, credibility is more important. Hence Chinese language sources and websites may be required for such information. The Wikipedia guidelines on sources and referencing do not seem to prohibit local language (Chinese) websites. I think that is ok, as long as we write the reference "Title" in English with a "(in Chinese)" suffix, to allow reviewers to cross check the same. This will also comply with the Wikipedia verifiability requirements. :::Notthebestusername (talk) 03:47, 11 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
That'd be great! Many thanks! Wishds (talk) 12:24, 11 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

[edit]

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:24, 27 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
