Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:24, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

First annual Tree of Life Decemberween contest

After all the fun with the Spooky Species Contest last month, there's a new contest for the (Northern hemisphere's) Winter holidays at Wikipedia:WikiProject Tree of Life/Contest. It's not just Christmas, but anything festive from December-ish. Feel free to add some ideas to the Festive taxa list and enter early and often. --Nessie (talk) 18:40, 12 November 2019 (UTC)

This article was proposed for deletion by a newbie who noted its poor state. Can you all please help team up to add all reliable sources to fix this article? Bearian (talk) 23:48, 28 November 2019 (UTC)

The Feline Barnstar

For anyone who hasn't noticed yet, I've made Template:The Feline Barnstar and added it already to the main project page. Jerm (talk) 16:52, 11 January 2020 (UTC)

@Jerm: It's very purrrty. :-)  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  02:04, 25 January 2020 (UTC)

Infobox discussion

Please see Template talk:Infobox dog breed#FCI listing near top is inappropriate., for a discussion of alphabetical versus other registry ordering, which has implication for how {{Infobox cat breed}} is done, too.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  02:04, 25 January 2020 (UTC)

Ashera

Presently Ashera redirects to Savannah cat, but that article doesn't mention the Ashera. So, something has to change, and there seem to be four options:

  • The Ashera redirect needs to go to WP:RFD for re-redlinking
  • Significant material about the Ashera needs to be added (with reliable sources) to Savannah cat as a section, and the redirect pointed to that section. This is a good option if this is just a sub-breed or variant of the Savannah, and the Ashera has no stand-alone breed recognition in any notable registries. It might also be mentioned in tight summary form at List of experimental cat breeds.
  • A proper Ashera article needs to be written, with sufficient in-depth coverage in multiple, independent, reliable sources to pass WP:GNG. This is only a good option if the Ashera has breed recognition (at least provisional) in one or more major registries. Otherwise we have a WP:NPOV/WP:NOR/WP:PROMO issue of WP being used to promote something as a breed when it isn't one.
  • A short section on the Ashera, with sources, needs to be added to List of experimental cat breeds (only), and the redirect pointed there. This is a good option if there are some sources about this variety (and there seem to be some, focusing on specimens selling for over US$100K), but there's no major-registry recognition as a breed, and the connection to the Savannah is tenuous.

Do we think this alleged breed is section-worthy? Article-worthy? Just list-worthy? Not encyclopedic and thus RfD-worthy? I haven't yet done any real research on the alleged breed, and am just opening this to the project in case someone already knows all about it (or has some time on their hands).

Delete the redirect. The claims say it is a cross between a serval and leopard cat with some domestic cat introduced somehow. It may even be a scam (link). Either way it seems a commercial enterprise to sell an expensive cat of questionable origins. Nothing suggests this is a legitimate cat breed. A section in Savannah cat cat describing the controversy might be appropriate if more information can be found.   Jts1882 | talk  07:58, 1 December 2019 (UTC)

Merger proposal:Breed standard

An article of interest to the project—Breed standard—has been proposed for merging with Breed type. Project members are invited to participate at the merger discussion. Cavalryman (talk) 02:47, 27 January 2020 (UTC).

Just a heads up that your project portal was removed from your project template in December. Espresso Addict (talk) 05:00, 28 January 2020 (UTC)

Restored....if there is a problem deletion or better yet fixing over orphaned is best.--Moxy 🍁 05:17, 28 January 2020 (UTC)

On the ambiguity of "cat"

 – Pointer to relevant discussion elsewhere.

Please see Talk:Cat#Big cats a thing of the past?, on whether "cat" is too ambiguous to use on its own in this manner. This is a rather perennial debate at this point, and we probably need to settle it one way or the other.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  21:09, 28 January 2020 (UTC)
