WikiProject Fraser Valley

I'm thinking of creating WikiProject Fraser Valley. Would anybody be interested in contributing? Bk Read Talk 19:23, 16 March 2014 (UTC)

Hey Buffalkill. Glad to see someone wanting to work on these articles. I just wanted to mention that WikiProject Canada has quite a few more specialized WikiProjects that haven't really taken off, due to lack of involvement. Recently, another editor started WikiProject Okanagan, but it died away. My feeling is that active BC editors should use WikiProject British Columbia to collaberate, until (!) it gets busy enough to subdivide. But it your choice, of course, and if you want to start, I'll sign up (mostly because I want to get Fraser River up to GA!) The Interior (Talk) 21:23, 16 March 2014 (UTC)
  • Oppose as it is superfluous and redundant with this WikiProject (WP). We don't need a sub-provincial project to improve articles within this region. The Okanagan WP, boldly created without any consultation that I saw, was never needed. Let's not use that now died-off WP as a precedent. In Alberta next door, the consensus has been there is no need for Calgary and Edmonton WPs as the provincial one is sufficient. Hwy43 (talk) 21:31, 16 March 2014 (UTC)
  • Comment The problem with the term "the Fraser Valley" is its very large overlap with the GVRD; that was the case even before the CFVRD and DARD were abolished: Richmond, Surrey, Langley, New West, Port Coquitlam, are regularly described in the media as "in the Fraser Valley" - which they are. So WikiProject Vancouver, which covers all of Greater Vancouver, will suffice, even though it's fairy dormant other than very GV-specific queries e.g. Heritage buildings in New West, Surrey etc need coverage. I agree about WP:OK's flaws and peremptory creation, and while noting that if it had thrived, and there were more OK editors and others in the Interior, WikiProject Kootenays or WP:Northern British Columbia would have had a point; but even WikiProject Vancouver Island isn't needed; WPBC is fine, especially given the dwindling number of BC wikipedians; WikiProject Eastern Washington got rolled into WikiProject Washington some time ago, also. A subproject for Geography of British Columbia is more relevant than regional subwikiprojects, though again there's just not that many folks out there; WikiProject Geography of Canada is already fairly inactive anyway.Skookum1 (talk) 01:30, 23 April 2014 (UTC)
  • Note about the DARD link, I'd meant that as the Dewdney-Alouette Regional District, it goes to a Northern Ireland government ministry Department of Agriculture and Rural Development so I'm not sure what to do there other than a hatnote....but I don't really want to go near Irish articles right now. The RD is "dead" so there's no way it should be primary redirect....`Skookum1 (talk) 01:34, 23 April 2014 (UTC)
  • Recommend a Fraser Valley group as part of WikiProject Vancouver Canuckle (talk) 04:33, 23 April 2014 (UTC)
  • I would support expansion of WP:Vancouver's scope to include the Fraser Valley instead of creating a separate WikiProject. Hwy43 (talk) 05:41, 23 April 2014 (UTC)
  • I think that would be a good suggestion. Sometimes creating a WikiProject can boost activity on its related articles but consider the WikiProject Vancouver has a hard time gathering up people for projects, my fear would be that much time and effort would be spent on the Fraser Valley one and it would experience the same woes. Mkdwtalk 21:12, 23 April 2014 (UTC)
  • I know the Valley well, but am not living there at the moment...nor likely to for a very long time. How many of "us" are in the Fraser Valley? Pics needed etc....and maps, and more......I'd say the loose definition of "the Vancouver area" used on List of filming locations in the Vancouver area is a better way to define WPVancouver. such that nearby places that aren't part of Greater Vancouver or even the Lower Mainland can be included (Gibsons, Squamish, Whistler, Chilliwack/Agassiz-Kent, and up to Hope.Skookum1 (talk) 14:03, 26 April 2014 (UTC)

citing for "[official] set of regions" demanded for Category:Rivers of British Columbia by region

One of the "support" voters for the CfD which attempted to delete or merge all subcats in Category:Rivers of British Columbia by region, who also joined the nom there in challenging all all British Columbia region titles/articles as OR, has demanded cites as somehow mandatory for BC regions, claiming there has to be a citation for diffusing categories; I have yet to get an answer for any such guideline or policy and had intended on starting a discussion myself. Input from people actually familiar with BC's geography and regions is needed.

useful resources

I think somewhere in a sandbox of mine there's something similar to this list, though this has stuff that's not on there; for now just posting this on the talkpage, maybe a separate subpage of this WikiProject could be made to hold resources of this kind; comments from the original list on my talkpage have been trimmed, but this list was compiled because of OR challenges to the mere existence of the well-known region names on Regions of Canada#British Columbia; there's more to be added, I think I posted more - which were of course ignored and called "irrelevant" by the nom of the recent CfD (without, it seems, even trying to read any of them):

More as time permits, I've been busy trying to make and improve articles, rather than having to do "go get me a shrubbery" errands for people who, no matter what kind or size or pedigree of shrubbery you bring back, are never satisfied ...and don't read what you provide for them anyway. Right now assistance in citing "North Coast", "South Coast" and "Central Coast" as region names would be appreciated; I'll be writing the BC Names Office within a day or two asking for entries for "Okanagan", "Cariboo" etc and also "North Coast" etc. to be added there.....you'd think they'd already be in the provincial gazette, but they're not, though some region names e.g. Lower Mainland, Robson Valley, are.Skookum1 (talk) 08:02, 27 April 2014 (UTC)

Beaver Point, Saltspring

Please see Talk:Ruckle_Provincial_Park#Beaver_Point_-_should_I_redirect_it_here.3F. I'm just trying to get together all "points" and capes for a new Category:Headlands of British Columbia..... in this case the point should redirect to the park, but that category should be on the redirect, which I've also done with Point Atkinson, which had been a redlink.Skookum1 (talk) 07:46, 3 May 2014 (UTC)

Only other use of "Beaver Point" I can see is a redlinked summit in Montana on this page. Maybe more in CGNDB, though....seems likely.Skookum1 (talk) 07:47, 3 May 2014 (UTC)

Nova Albion-in-BC theory being met with dismissal on Talk:New Albion despite sources

Cross-border and shared-history articles with competing USian and "BPOV" (British Point of View) issues I've seen before re Oregon Country and the various Columbia River/region and border dispute articles; it's been much in evidence re Nova Albion, the article for which is in the USian 'official' form of New Albion. Please see Talk:New Albion#BPOV vs USPOV: Nova Albion re BC as to the legitimacy of the theory and who says what about it that the Point Reyes advocates/aficionados style as "rubbish and a "fringe theory". I'll leave it at that, other than to direct you to the article's history to see my additions which were trashed and sneered at.....this is not an insignificant topic in terms of BC history or its significance in general; but USPOV is having none of it. Not in Wikipedia, that is.Skookum1 (talk) 17:14, 26 May 2014 (UTC)

Mount Doug article

I restored the lede in this today after somebody replaced Mount Douglas with PKOLS, its SENCOTEN name; I did leave the manifesto-type material even though it needs de-POVizing and, as always with politics in BC, the cites provided are from blogspace; not really fringe/false material as alternative news cite; if anyone would care to tidy the page up from this point and deal with those citations (there are others available that won't be blogs)...I don't have the stomach for it right now, or the time/energy.Skookum1 (talk) 07:09, 21 June 2014 (UTC)

I meant to comment that we have previously seen POV edit/name wars with the Haida Gwaii and Salish Sea articles, ultimately resolved when the names became official; though advocacy type SPAs were trying to use Wikipedia to "push" the proposed name change; bit of a different thing than external anthro-linguistic types insisting in archaic/disused names based on "sources" as with Lillooet language vs St'at'imcets.....a fine balancing act between POV agenda-izing from the home turf and know-nothing guideline flaunting/misquoting by the uninformed from outside of BC.....Skookum1 (talk) 07:20, 21 June 2014 (UTC)

CfD relevant to toponymy of BC and the Pacific Northwest

Category:Chinook Jargon place names has been nominated for deletion/upmerging, with a suggestion that List of Chinook Jargon place names be upmerged. Please add any comments to [[1]].Skookum1 (talk) 15:19, 3 July 2014 (UTC)

found both of these lately; Hill-Tout's page I've expanded slightly with details, there's much more out there could be added to it; the Great Midden deserves a more detailed page; just a heads-up; there's other village and archaeology titles out there of note, few are Nat'l Historic Sites though; Hill-Tout's writings are partly online, they can be useful for expanding various ethno articles, especially as he got bits of pre-Contact history in detail that you don't see in most modern items e.g. the Nlaka'pamux invasion of the Lower Lillooet Country, the Secwepemc war on the St'at'imc of the Lakes and the Pemberton Valley, Haida raids of the latter via Toba Inlet, details of Kwantlen history and more. Not sure what's in the online-available materials; "The Salish people" is only online for sale as books; the Kwantlen material is quoted on the www.surreyhistory.ca page (Surrey Museum I think, I'll get the link later, it's bedtime).Skookum1 (talk) 17:01, 8 July 2014 (UTC)

Other native items in need of making are Whattlekainum (the chief who met helped Fraser, and moved the principal Kwantlen village from Skoikatl (sp? - New Westminster) to Kanaka Creek, then MacMillan Island; I wound up redlinking Chief George Capilano while revising the Joe Capilano]] page; he was the chief who welcomed Capt Vancouver. The proper Hunquminum spelling of Whattlekainum I don't know yet...Skookum1 (talk) 17:05, 8 July 2014 (UTC)

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

Hydrography resources for other BC

I happened to find a few things linked through the main BC Names/GeoBC page last night, where sizes of water basins, lengths of streams, elevation data for lakes and streams, flow rates etc can all be found/cited; I haven't explored these fully, just dropping the links for others to have as a resource when working on lake/river articles:

new article Lejac and related

I just created Lejac, which was a missing link in the Fraser Lake region of the Nechako Country; the communities of Fraser Lake and Fort Fraser and the Nadleh Whuten First Nation's Nadleh Village are all part of the same "cluster", and there is as yet no article on Fraser Lake (lake) itself. In MOSTCOMMON usage, the lake would not be primary topic as the community is better known and per WP:CSG the community name is unique, so doesn't need comma-province, and while Fraser Lake (British Columbia) or Fraser Lake (Canada) might be usable the simple "(lake)" dab seems most CONCISE; it is a large lake and needs it own article for hydrography, fisheries etc reasons. Nadleh Village in most of the connected articles, which include Beaumont Provincial Park, Nautley River Lejac Residential School and Rose Prince, is piped to the First Nation, but ideally the government page should be separate from the community page; partly because Nadleh Village ("Nautley (Fort Fraser) Indian Reserve No. 1 is only one of their communities (Lejac is the other main one), and their territory is quite a bit larger than the small Indian reserves allotted to them; a government is not a place, so piping a place to a government page, still fairly common across Canada, is not right and confuses the purposes of categories and the meanings of titles.

My main point in describing this "cluster" is that regional maps for things like this group of articles would be good to have; and in BC very often there are such clusters around or near municipalities that all need to be addressed and worked on conjointly so they are consistent with each other; Lillooet and Hazelton are similar cases where the "metropolitan" region of the name (in this case Fraser Lake) needs to include more than the municipality/ies in question; there's a host of these e.g. Williams Lake, Kamloops, Merritt etc.

This is also posted because of an email request for ideas about what other aboriginal and geographical articles are yet needed, or in need of improvement; this cluster is very historically and culturally significant for various reasons, and as a subregion should have "mid" importance within BC, though insignificant in national terms. I wound up making Lejac since it was fairly straightforward, but all these articles could use integration/expansion and there's more sources out there.Skookum1 (talk) 05:17, 12 October 2014 (UTC)

RFC on Indo-Canadians in Vancouver

RFC at: Talk:Indo-Canadians#Merge_discussion: Should Indo-Canadians in British Columbia and Indo-Canadians in Greater Vancouver be separate or should the latter be merged into the former?

Another question: Would it count as WP:SYNTH to have a dedicated article on the Indo-Canadian population of Metro Vancouver? (Vancouver, Surrey, and other Vancouver suburbs) WhisperToMe (talk) 06:14, 23 October 2014 (UTC)

Would it count as SYNTH? I've explained to you again and again that it IS SYNTH, on your part, and that it is unnatural to divide the topic between Greater Vancouver and the province-at large, and you shoot back that my 59 (as of next week) years as a British Columbian are "beliefs", as if your neophyte misinterpretations/extrapolations of readings weren't also formed by your own beliefs. But in that question, you once again mis-use a term whose nature in Wikipedia was exhaustively debated long ago. I don't care if sources blur the Metro/Greater Vancouver term, there is a difference in technical terms and THAT is why Metro Vancouver and Greater Vancouver are two different articles. Metro Vancouver is the DBA/brandname of the board of the Greater Vancouver Regional District regional government, which itself is not the quite the same thing as "Greater Vancouver", which is the name of the metropolitan area. "Metro Vancouver" is no more correct, sources or not, than "Asian Indians" was. But far be it from you to listen to someone correcting or explaining things to you; you've already told me my years of experience as a Wikipedian with a good reputation for "knowing his stuff", BC history and geography in particular, don't matter squat. Your FORUMSHOPPING this around included in all cases leading questions of the WP:POLLING type and is one of many behaviours and obstinate gaming that you have used to resist what is obvious to any British Columbian. You are asking loaded questions after-the-fact, after ignoring and willfully bypassing my recommendation that "in British Columbia" was the most useful and most relevant title; limiting it to city boundaries, or the GVRD's boundaries, based on what you think sources are saying, is just childish nonsense.Skookum1 (talk) 09:40, 25 October 2014 (UTC)
Filing an RFC and notifying all of the appropriate WikiProjects at the same time, I think, should satisfy any concerns regarding forumshopping. In other words, there's no inappropriate forum shopping. Several published authors clearly have compared and contrasted specifically the Vancouver Indo-Canadian population to those elsewhere. Because published authors do it, having such a spinoff complies with Wikipedia:V. WhisperToMe (talk) 17:41, 25 October 2014 (UTC)

Hello. I have submitted a move request for Chinese_Canadians_in_British_Columbia to be moved to Chinese_Canadians_in_Greater Vancouver. Another Wikipedian believes it is improper to have ethnicity-based articles focusing on a city, so he moved Chinese_Canadians_in_Greater Vancouver (I created this article with the intention of focusing on the Chinese community in Vancouver) to Chinese_Canadians_in_British_Columbia. My move request is here: Talk:Chinese_Canadians_in_British_Columbia#Requested_move. You are welcome to discuss whether it is proper to have an article focusing on a Chinese ethnic population of a particular city or metro area, or whether there should only be such areas focusing on prefectures/provinces/states.

For full disclosure, both I and the Wikipedian who moved the page are together currently involved in an editing dispute regarding Indo-Canadians in Greater Vancouver and Indo-Canadians in British Columbia over whether the articles should remain separate or be combined together. You may see the pages of this dispute here:

This notification is contrary to guidelines and includes editorializing which falls under WP:POLLING.Skookum1 (talk) 07:08, 26 October 2014 (UTC)

WP:POLLING is about the collection of votes or deciding things by votes. The purpose of this message is to inform all interested parties by WikiProject. WhisperToMe (talk) 12:12, 26 October 2014 (UTC)
Then I used the wrong wiki-cap title; WP:POLL maybe, the attempt to enlist sympathetic votes rather than simply stating the existence of the the discussion; your inclusion of the ancillary links is also a violation; for an admin, you sure aren't in habit of respecting things like that; not that lots of admins behave questionably.Skookum1 (talk) 05:23, 27 October 2014 (UTC)

Images of BC Provincial Parks

I thought I'd offer a gentle reminder that there are a huge number of BC Provincial Parks articles without images. The list might be a little outdated, but here's a google map showing all the BC Provincial Parks in need of images. If anyone happens to live near one or more of these, please consider visiting and uploading a few photos at some point. Thanks, TheMightyQuill (talk) 09:01, 31 October 2014 (UTC)

Forest industry and MoF

As yet there is no British Columbia Ministry of Forests article despite that ministry's and industry's long-primary role in the province's history and politics. I was looking for somewhere to put to use the valuable information on logging railroads in this memoir by a retired forester; it also includes information on the BC Forest Service Vessel Squadron. As yet, from what I can find, there is only Clearcutting in British Columbia which is a bit of a POV screed and needs revision and more; it could provide the basis for Forestry in British Columbia or British Columbia forest industry (?) but at present it is way too POV and written from one angle only...and the title is not slightly with POV overtones, also. I am often a critic of clearcutting and of the economics of the forestry sector and its overweening political clout, so am not "pro-forestry" here, I just think this subject does need to be addressed, and that the MoF needs an article (it has a different name of late, and is also a subministry of the BC Ministry of Natural Resources, a "super-ministry" now in charge of over half the provincial budget and which also needs an article. A broader history of forestry and logging in BC is definitely needed; the "clearcutting" article is in that direction but too narrow-field at present to warrant a simple renaming.Skookum1 (talk) 04:12, 24 November 2014 (UTC)

expansion/split of history of Victoria from main city article

Not that I have time to work on it, but please see Talk:Victoria,_British_Columbia#expansion_-_split.3F_-_of_history_section_needed and also the new further readings on Richard Blanshard and Colony of Vancouver Island.Skookum1 (talk) 08:11, 27 November 2014 (UTC)

Also the chapters in that book on the Cariboo and Fraser Gold Rushes contain a huge amount of detail that could go on those articles and in the case of the Cariboo on articles such as Antler Creek, Richfield i.e. gold-diggings amounts, etc. Right now the Cariboo one focuses on Barkerville only, though the rush began around Keithley Creek and Quesnel Forks. nosracines.ca has lots of books useful for expansion of BC history items, this is one of the better and more detailed ones.Skookum1 (talk) 08:14, 27 November 2014 (UTC)

Sloughs list

I'd amended slough (hydrology) by adding the North American meaning of side-channel (in UK English it's just a swamp) and then went at BC Names and pulled the full list of officially-named ones; one or two have some historical significance, or define a particular place; others can be redirected to articles on the location they're at, with Category:Sloughs of the Lower Mainland and Category:Sloughs of British Columbia and corresponding lists will be mostly redirects; Finn Slough, the only one currently with an article, is actually a community name, not a named slough, but three named sloughs are there; some of these are tributary-feeders e.g. Nicomen Slough is met by Norrish Creek, which is technically a tributary of the Fraser...and is, if you consider Nicomen Slough to be part of the Fraser itself. Some like those on Harrison or Sumas Prairies, are continuations of streams. Maria Slough has a steamboat story, as I recall; Sturgeon Slough figures in the story of Slumach. Most of those in the Lower Mainland have something to do with floodplain drainage; essentially though, they figure as tributaries of the Fraser or whatever river they're part of. Hotsprings Slough I'll redirect to the Harrison Hot Springs article.

List of sloughs

So far only one of these has an article, and it's not actually a gazetted name ie. Finn Slough; there is a slough behind that community, I'm looking for what the proper name of it is. But in doing so I looked up "% slough" in BC Names; many of these titles below can be redirected. e.g. to the adjacent island in the case of the one (Bedford Slough?) by MacMillan Island; in Nicomen Slough's case not sure if to Nicomen Island or Norrish Creek which it's part of; Deroche Slough is connected by has a different name. Anyway here's the list, linked; some are notable, others can be redirects to whatever they're connected to (for now includes those on the Skeena and on other streams eg Campbell River on Vancouver Island)

Sloughs in the Lower Mainland)

Some of these are on the Pitt River, the Blind Slough is on the Stave (and is part of a reservoir, it is not a slough as such) or related to other tributaries e.g. the Chilliwack/Vedder et al.
