Saint Monica
The line at the beginning of the biography of Saint Monica (Mother of Augustine) reads as follows: "He was a man of kindness,[6] but also a man given to violent tempers and adultery." This is contradictory and offensive to women. At the least it could read "He was a man of contradiction - while there is evidence of kindness, he was also given to ..."
This subtlety may seem obtuse to patriarchal readers but would far more appropriate to those more sensitive to the history of gender violence. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Sioux.mckenna (talk • contribs) 06:04, 1 December 2009 (UTC)

Book-class
Since this is probably the biggest project, and several Wikipedia-Books are biographies, could this project adopt the book-class? This would really help WikiProject Wikipedia-Books, as the WP Biography people can oversee books like Leonardo da Vinci much better than we could as far as merging, deletion, content, and such are concerned. Eventually there probably will be a "Books for discussion" process, so that would be incorporated in the Article Alerts. I'm placing this here rather than on the template page since several taskforces would be concerned.
There's an article in this week Signpost if you aren't familiar with Wikipedia-Books and classes in general. Thanks. Headbomb {ταλκκοντριβς – WP Physics} 21:17, 1 December 2009 (UTC)
- I have raised a question at the sign post article. Either I am misunderstanding the purpose of Book-class or there is a serious problem with this proposal. Can you provide an answer for me? It may be that I have misunderstood the explanation of what is involved, in which case a slightly simplified explanation may help others in the same position. Regards. Road Wizard (talk) 21:42, 1 December 2009 (UTC)
- Yes I think you misunderstood. I've replied to your comment, but for others here, the book class is for collections of articles known as Wikipedia-Books, and not for books. Headbomb {ταλκκοντριβς – WP Physics} 21:50, 1 December 2009 (UTC)

- Alright, I found 29 biography-related books in Category:Wikipedia Books, which can be found in Category:Book-Class biography articles
- If you want to write more books, simply start the book creator (click "Create a book", in the print/export toolbox on the left of your screen), and follow instructions. The easiest/fastest way to create a book is to go to a category, add all the pages in that category ("Add this category to your book"), and review the book ("Show book") to create chapters and whatnot. See Help:Books for details. It's pretty easy to use, just toy around with it and you'll figure it out in no time.
- There's also a manual way to create books if you don't like the book-creator, but I'd still suggest using the book-creator at least for the first 2-3 books just so you get the hang of it. If something's unclear or confusing, just drop me a line and I'll help as best I can. Headbomb {ταλκκοντριβς – WP Physics} 13:56, 8 December 2009 (UTC)
Anthony Perry of Perrymount, Wexford
The article about this man (died 1798) states that he was born in County Down. I think he was born in Dublin- what is the evidence for him having come from a Down family? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.47.98.151 (talk) 13:01, 2 December 2009 (UTC)
- What the article needs is properly references more than anything. A quick search turned up one that says he was born in Co. Down, so I've added it to the article. It mentions it's source is the Royal Irish Academy's Dictionary of Irish Biography but I can't verify this. JohnBlackburne (talk) 14:25, 2 December 2009 (UTC)
Merge discussion of Thomas K. Dye/Newshounds
I closed Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Thomas K. Dye as merge - he is the author of a webcomic. User:Barberio disputed this close and opened a deletion review, which was closed as the admin argued that merge closes are not considered at DRV. I merged the material to Newshounds and redirected the article; Barberio has reverted the redirect, though the material remains merged. Bloomberg Television Self-Promotion
There are many small articles associated with employees of the Bloomberg Television Network. They all seem to have this premise: "if you work for TV, you're famous!" But mostly, they seem like promotional puffery for the network -- the various pepole haven't generally done anything important except work on the show and other minor television work. There's some effort to make the accomplishments sound important, but it's mostly just like reading a resume.
I've marked some of these for deletion; there's probably a lot more. And they'll probably come back, because it seems pretty clear that someone is being paid to put them here.

Geoffrey le Scrope KB
Sir Geoffrey le Scrope KB (c. 1280 – December 2, 1340) was an English lawyer, and Chief Justice of the King's Bench for four periods between 1324 and 1338
This opening line in the biography 1) contains no references, and 2) indicates the justice was a 'Knight of the Order of the Bath' however, the wiki article referenced, itself indicates that the order was not founded until almost 500 years later.
Although the practice of the ritual of the bath to create a new knight was practiced during his time, it was not a formal 'order' and did not carry with the the 'honour' of the use of the initials KB or KCB after the name. Would someone please remove these initials and the associated reference. Archtype1 (talk) 00:29, 6 December 2009 (UTC)
- It helps if you provide a link to the article you are talking about as it encourages people to go and take a look. However, I believe you are referring to the Geoffrey le Scrope article.
- The KB probably was intended to refer to "King's Bench" rather than "Knight of the Bath", but someone came along later and linked to the wrong article. It is unreferenced though and I can find no evidence that the post-nominals were used for either case during that time, so I will go ahead and remove them.
- In future if you find unsourced material that you feel is wrong you are encouraged to be bold and remove it yourself. Regards. Road Wizard (talk) 01:13, 6 December 2009 (UTC)

This is a reminder that voting is open until 23:59 UTC next Monday 14 December to elect new members of the Arbitration Committee. Angus Oblong
Hello. I just reorganised and supplied references for Angus Oblong. The reason I mention this here is that the article's history suggests that there have been various edit wars about his life. Even his talk page was vandalised by anons who would remove comments from other anons as well as registered editors. A review of the sources I introduce make it sound like he values his privacy, so I'd like members of your wikiproject to (1) review my recent edits to see if I've violated his rights to privacy, and (2) keep an eye on the article for any future vandalism. An issue has arisen at Russell Crowe regarding addition of a large section of content on Firepower International which another editor and myself have gone on record as stating it is given undue weight, leans toward convicting Russell of complicity in a con activity and is inappropriately lengthy with no evidence against him save an appearance on The Tonight Show with a jersey. Attribution of Pearl Cleage's bio
I'm new here and don't know how this should be done, but the article on Pearl Cleage is copied from the New Georgia Encyclopedia, and the article is credited to June Akers Seese. That information should appear on the page, yes? http://www.georgiaencyclopedia.org/nge/Article.jsp?id=h-2564
Magpie54 (talk) 20:35, 14 December 2009 (UTC)
- Thank you for the notification. Our article for Pearl Cleage was created in June 2005, but the Internet Archive shows that the New Georgia Encyclopedia had already used the exact same text in 2004. This is an obvious copyright violation and we need to take steps to remove the affected material. I will try to salvage the article but if that isn't possible it will have to be deleted. Road Wizard (talk) 20:52, 14 December 2009 (UTC)
- After studying every paragraph it appears there is no material worth salvaging. Some edits have occurred to refactor small sections of the text, but not enough to avoid breaching our copyright rules. Once the page is deleted a new article can be created from scratch without the copyright issues. Road Wizard (talk) 21:02, 14 December 2009 (UTC)
Howard Zimmerman
Problems with deletion of my home page on Wikipedia and requests for a non-biased write-up.
I think I finally understand your problem. At one point the description of my page was said to be too brief and there was a request for more data. I put that in and it was deleted.
HOWEVER, I think the editors are missing a major point.
Thus, the items listed are simple statements of fact and cannot involve bias. I have now searched the write-ups of other members of the NAS and mine are just as factual and, perhaps, stick to pure detail -
Dates in different positions Dates of the B.S., the Ph.D., the Postdoctoral Discrete names and dates of honors (Awards). U.S. Army Service in WWII The list of 87 former research students in academia with a partial listing. The number of Scientific Publications.
There will be no one who can list the facts of one's career as accurately or completely as the person.
The only thing missing at this point is silly, namely referencing. I can reference the University of Wisconsin Chemistry Department web site for much of this. The well-known chemists in academia are recognizable to organic chemists; here I could refer to our annual list of "Former Research Students". The referencing I have seen in the Write-ups of NAS members in Wikipedia is not that specific, and for a reason. Ohe cannot reference the University office which would certify one's being at that rank at that date. AND it is never seen in Wikipedia.
The complaint about not having running text is fixable. But not all write-ups have running text. Mine lists the items one by one.
In short, it seems that I am having more problems than reasonable. This deals only with my basic write-up defining who I am. It does not deal with the article I submitted. But one thing at a time.
Howard E. Zimmerman A. C. Cope and Hilldale Professor of Chemistry (That, too, can be checked by looking me up on the University of Wisconsin sites) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Hezimmerman (talk • contribs) 21:24, 14 December 2009 (UTC)
- I assume you are talking about the Howard Zimmerman article. We generally advise people not to write their own autobiographies as it is almost impossible for them to write a neutral, relevant and verifiable article about themselves. Even when you think you are being perfectly neutral unconscious bias has a habit of sneaking in. Please see our guideline at Wikipedia:Autobiography for further information.
- I would recommend leaving the article alone to let it develop naturally; if you are a notable individual another editor is bound to take an interest sooner or later and expand the text based on reliable source material. If you are not notable then your article will not remain long on Wikipedia no matter how many times you try to recreate it.
- I expect you will have some further questions so feel free to ask them here or on my talk page. Regards. Road Wizard (talk) 23:21, 14 December 2009 (UTC)

I still cannot see why my new information, with relevant sources plainly given, should not be accepted. Those who continually erase correct information should come forward and give an adequate explantion, otherwise I will lose faith in Wikipedia's reputation. 213.114.144.97 (talk) 17:29, 16 December 2009 (UTC)
I cannot see why my new information on David Napier below cannot be accepted. I have already stated that I would like help in formulating everything in the proper way; why is no help forthcoming?

This article is about the marine engineer. For other people of the same name see David Napier (disambiguation)
David Napier (1790 – 1869) was a Scottish marine engineer. Napier began in his father's works at Camlachie and built the boiler for Henry Bell's Comet in 1812. Subsequently he took over the foundry and established a reputation as one of the best builders of marine engines in Scotland. In 1821 Napier moved to Lancefield Quay on the north bank of the Clyde and Camlachie was taken over by his cousin Robert Napier. At Lancefield, Napier began to construct complete ships, including in 1827 the little paddle steamerAglaia. She was not the world's first iron steamship, but she had only an iron bottom, and wooden sides above water, to ply on Loch Eck. She was afterwards called the "James Gallacher," and plied on the Clyde. Her dimensions were as follows: Length, 62 '8 '; breadth, 13' 0 "; depth, 4, '6 ', gross tonnage, 49 36/94 tons. <Ref Charles F.T. Young: The Fouling and Corrosion of Iron Ships : Their Causes and Means of Prevention, with Mode of Application To The Existing Iron-Clad, The London Drawing Association, London, 1867)>. - "Aglaia" is sometimes claimed as the world's first iron steamship, but this was the paddle steamer "Aaron Manby". <Ref. "Aaron Manby" in Wikipedia.> In 1839 Napier acquired a shipyard on the Thames at Millwall, London, which is commemorated in the modern Napier Avenue. The yard was run by his two sons, while Napier himself continued with experiments in improving the steamboat. In 1854 the yard was sold to Messrs J Scott Russell and used for building the Great Eastern.[1] References

- Here is the reversion of your edits. If you take a look at the link I will talk you through some of the issues.
- you have capitalised Marine Engineer when marine engineer is more accurate.
- you added a space to David Napier (disambiguation) so the link became broken, like so; David Napier (disambiguation ).
- you capitalised Began instead of began.
- you removed italics from Comet.
- you changed "in 1812" to "the 1812th".
you removed the claim that it was the "world's first iron steam-ship" and its associated source without explanation.Correction; I see you provided an explanation on the article talk page.- you added an incomplete <Ref .....> tag instead of a pair of <ref></ref> tags, which completely hid the remaining contents of the article behind a citation error message.
- you tried to use Wikipedia as a reference (Wikipedia articles cannot be used to reference Wikipedia articles).
- you tried to add your signature to article space.
- you broke the {{DEFAULTSORT:Napier, David}} code by using round brackets like so; ((DEFAULTSORT: Napier, David)).
- you added unnecessary descriptors to the categories, which would have been added automatically by DEFAULTSORT if it had been working.
- you broke {{shipping-bio-stub}} by using round brackets like so; ((shipping-bio-stub)).
- If you can avoid those 12 errors your contribution will probably remain intact. Road Wizard (talk) 20:43, 16 December 2009 (UTC)
Good bot to use to wikilink new Bio articles?
I've recently translated several Bio articles from es.wiki, including Manuel Mondragon, Gregorio Ruiz, and Hans Kundt, and also several biographies of rules of Transoxiana (I'm a nerd). What's a good bot or device to use to seek out articles which mention said names and wikilink the first mention thereof? It seems laborious to run search and go and put [[ ]] around a name 30 times. Ideas? MatthewVanitas (talk) 04:25, 18 December 2009 (UTC)
Evdokiya or Evdoxia Feodorovna Lopukhina
The article about the first wife of Peter I of Russia (Peter the Great) includes two different versions of her name. It should be defined if her first name was Evdokiya or Evdoxia, as they are two different names. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.72.37.86 (talk) 13:38, 18 December 2009 (UTC)

Lajos Batthyány
Hello. Me and my partner user:SimonTrew have worked on Lajos Batthyány's biography. Can we ask for a reassesment? This article was in stub class before, but we put more content, pictures, sources and references in it. Many thanks -Monkap (talk) 14:00, 19 December 2009 (UTC)
- No matter, I've listed it at the Assessments page, here. Si Trew (talk) 14:53, 19 December 2009 (UTC)
date problems
Hello.
The article reads thus:
"Gaskell was born Elizabeth Stevenson on 29 September 1810, at 93 Cheyne Walk, Chelsea, which was then on the outskirts of London. Gaskell was the eighth and last of her parents' children, the only one except the first-born, John (born 1806), to survive infancy."
I seriously doubt both these two dates of birth are right, but I'm not a historian of the age, so I don't feel qualified to fix anything.

- Hi. Can you specify which "The article" you are referring to? We have over 3 million articles to choose from. Road Wizard (talk) 01:25, 22 December 2009 (UTC)
Hello. That article uses entirely inappropriate references (blogs, personal pages, sites about paranormal), most of them with the intention to ridicule her. Although I find her claims and "experiences" totally baseless, I don't agree with that style of biography, especially the usage of 100% unreliable references. In the discussion page, I had suggested what seems to be a reliable source (UFO religions, by Christopher Hugh Partridge) but no one has been interested so far in using it (or any other legitimate source). Since a) biographies of such persons is not my cup of tea and b) I don't have access to the book mentioned above, I would kindly ask you to either mark this page for deletion or heavily edit it. Thank you.--Dipa1965 (talk) 20:32, 23 December 2009 (UTC)

Mike Ramsey was on the 1979 NCAA U of MN Championship team
Mike Ramsey was on the 1979 NCAA U of MN Championship team. This is an important fact and not even mentioned in his bio. From my recollection, Mike Ramsey played a regular shift, rotating with one other defense pair, which included Bill Baker. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.46.194.82 (talk) 18:41, 24 December 2009 (UTC)

Check Britannica bibliographic reference for Henry Longueville Mansel
In the entry on Mansel, it's stated that he contributed the article "Metaphysics" to the 5th edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica in 1860. But the 5th edition of the EB was published much earlier. I hope that someone can check into this. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jro571 (talk • contribs) 03:26, 25 December 2009 (UTC)

Ajay Rochester
Fraud charges additions that need to be added
On Jan 13th Ajay 2009 Rochester attended court and fought the charges. The case carried over a day as the Magistrate found that Centrelink had "conveniently" not bought files supporting Rocheter's claim that she had contacted Centrelink herself to alert them of the overpayments that had been made to her. Their records only dated to the day before Rochester's claim of contact. When order to go back to their offices and return with the files it was shown that Rochester had as per her testimony made contact with Centrelink to alert them of the over payments and that she had assisted them on many levels all of which Centrelink omitted from their body of "evidence" when chasing a very public conviction. The case was held over to Jan 14th when Justice O'Shane summed up with a lengthy recourse to Centrelink saying Rochester was no doubt of good character and made inferences to the method and intention of Centrelink in taking so many years to bring a case (the overpayments were years before Rochester become a household name)that would "under normal circumstances" not make it into court had the person NOT been in the media. Justice O'Shane's judgement was a section 19B - NO conviction recorded. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mandybruceajr (talk • contribs) 09:06, 26 December 2009 (UTC)
Rondo Hatton also appeared in the film, "Mighty Joe Young" as a wrestler named The Swedish Angel, who played tug of war with Mighty Joe Young. This often had me confused because there was a real "Swedish Angel" who wrestled. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.55.67.172 (talk) 00:31, 27 December 2009 (UTC)
trying to be fair
I took it upon myself to research and rewrite the entire bio because of the contention surrounding it. I am a law student on semester break and working on my research and writing skills, that is why the page is footnoted like an academic paper. I am not affiliated with any of the parties to the dispute and did this as semester break work project to keep my academic mindset going (I am also reading "the Nine" by Jeffery Toobin).
Further, my professors have said I need to work on my research and writing skills. I am from the area and recall a lot of the news surrounding the topic. I have also edited on Wiki in the past on topics like "Brown v. Board of Education" and other constitutional law issues, as these are areas of interest and limited expertise for me. Those edits though were done anonymously. I didn't think something like a minor edit (the number and names of the other cases bundled with Brown when it went up for review by the Supreme Court in 1952-1955 needed I identify myself or "blow my own horn," but rewriting an entire topic I felt would need my establishing an account.
I would be willing to research and rewrite other topics if they are in areas of interest or expertise. I stumbled across this and read the discussion page a few weeks back and thought I might could help out. If my edits are not acceptable, I won't disrupt the forum further.
As it is professors are already starting to list in their syllabi that Wikipedia is not an acceptable source for academic papers and I am just trying to increase its reliability because as an older college student, I enjoy being able to do Internet research and not having to go to the library and etc. Wikipedia is a good idea in my mind. I encourage others to use it, but to look at the credibility of a piece based on its sources and its proper use of references.
Please advise, if my efforts aren't needed or appreciated. —Preceding unsigned comment added by RafterJ (talk • contribs) 00:29, 31 December 2009 (UTC)

Biography
Anyone have an opinion as to whether a biography should have a header called "Biography" to separate the lede from the point where the chronology restarts with their birth. Is it standard for a biography? --Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) (talk) 02:47, 31 December 2009 (UTC)
- It would probably be adequate in the early stages of an article but it is far from ideal. Normal practice is to have something like "Early life", "Education" or "Early career" as the first section followed by other sections split by topic. Road Wizard (talk) 02:56, 31 December 2009 (UTC)
- What the wizard said - it's all a biography, isn't it? -Duribald (talk) 03:34, 31 December 2009 (UTC)
