This place does not exist in GNIS or on any recent map. It is simply the former name of Littlefield, Arizona, as confirmed by Google Book search in the Encyclopedic history of the Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day saints and our article The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Arizona. The schools in Littlefield still carry this name. That content should be moved to the Littlefield article, Beaver Dam should be removed from all lists and templates and finally converted to a redirect. --h-stt !? 23:57, 29 December 2010 (UTC)

Collaboration with the Wine Project on Arizona wine articles?

Hello! For 2011 the Wine Project is doing a new Wine Improvement Drive where each month we focus on an area of articles that relate to a particular theme. In January, we are are ringing in the New Year with New World wine, with a focus on the wines of the Northern Hemisphere-Canadian wine, American wine and Mexican wine. I am going by related projects to see if there is any interest in collaboration between this project and the wine project on the subject of Arizona wine
Some suggestion on potential article creations include History of Arizona wine and expansion of the main Arizona wine article as well as Sonoita AVA and Kokopelli Winery. And, of course, of HUGE help would be the upload of free use photos of Arizona wineries, wines and wine regions to Commons that could be used to better illustrate Arizona wine articles. If you're interested in helping, please drop a note at the Wine Project's talk page with the article you're interested in helping with. Thanks and have a great New Year! I would like someone to expand the article Mesa Distance Learning Program. It is quite a notable distance learning program. --Tyw7  (☎ Contact me! • Contributions)   Changing the world one edit at a time! 11:37, 4 January 2011 (UTC)

US Collaboration reactivated & Portal:United States starting next

Casliber recently posted a suggestion on the talk page for WikiProject United States about getting the US Wikipedians Collaboration page going again in an effort to build up articles for GA through FA class. See Wikipedia:U.S. Wikipedians' notice board/USCOTM. After several days of work from him the page is up and ready for action. A few candidates have already been added for you to vote on or you can submit one using the directions provided. If you are looking for inspiration here is a link to the most commonly viewed articles currently under the scope of Wikiproject United States. There are tons of good articles in the various US related projects as well so feel free to submit any article relating to US topics (not just those under the scope of WPUS). This noticeboard is intended for ‘’’All’’’ editors working on US subjects, not just those under WPUS.

The next item I intend to start updating is Portal:United States if anyone is interested in helping. Again this is not specific to WPUS and any help would be greatly appreciated to maximize visibility of US topics. The foundation has already been established its just a matter of updating the content with some new images, biographies and articles. Please let leave a comment on the Portals talk page or let me know if you have any questions or ideas. --Kumioko (talk) 19:03, 15 January 2011 (UTC)

Schools

Since November, I've been working on articles for Arizona schools. A sampling of my work is linked to below:

  • Willow Canyon High School was one of my first. Its style is typical of most of them, though.
  • Desert Edge High School was the first in the major creation wave. It has since been enhanced to be one of the best articles in the set, with no less than four references. Equally good is Verrado High School, which luckily was tag-teamed with an actual Verrado student.
  • My small school articles also serve as information repositories on the school district and are redirect targets, such as at Fort Thomas High School. Many of these smaller school districts are not notable by themselves (with few early exceptions, most of the smaller districts are done this way).
  • I'm also proud of my...more creative articles, such as at Greyhills Academy High School (need a website? sorry, none!) and Rough Rock Community School (extensively written with BIA sources).

I have whittled down the WP:MEA list of Arizona high schools to a puny 13, but because Arizona's high school system is still a little more formative, there are tons more at List of high schools in Arizona, which has actually been added to in recent years. Many are small charter school operations, except for the new defunct schools list (for which I need heavy assistance to write the articles). I have started that list with a basic list of closed Valley schools I know of (and have actually written one of the articles, Scottsdale High School). Other assistance is appreciated for adding coordinates and free images. Raymie (tc) 22:55, 8 February 2011 (UTC)

A very interesting tool of the Wikimedia Toolserver is called WikiProject Popular pages lists. These lists are similar to project-related article lists like U. S. article lists used for generating assessment statistics. The Popular pages lists include the rank, total views, average daily views, quality and importance ratings for the listed articles. Here is the full list of projects using popular pages lists. An FAQ also is available at User:Mr.Z-man/Popular pages FAQ.

I recently added links to lists of popular pages as shown below to the U.S. Portal - WikiProjects box and the nominations sections for each of the selected articles boxes.

Portal:United States/Projects/Popular pages

Because this project was not included, I am bringing up the popular pages tool here. This tool makes it very easy to track three of four balancing dimensions when selecting articles for showcasing at a portal - quality, importance and popularity. When tracking the fourth dimension, topic, the related article lists tool (such as for U.S. article lists tool) also might be useful by filtering on categories of interest.

If you do decide to use this tool, feel free to update Portal:United States/Projects/Popular pages as well.

Photo request: El Capitan School, Colorado City

Hi! I have a new photo request:

  • El Capitan School - Colorado City Unified School District - 255 North Cottonwood Street Colorado City, Arizona, 86021

I would really appreciate it if someone could upload a photo of the school

Thanks WhisperToMe (talk) 05:03, 21 March 2011 (UTC)

Speaking of photos...

(also posted to WP:IMAGES)

I made this find, and it has images that would sorely enrich the Arizona high school article set, plus some school district articles:

http://www.azsfb.gov/sfb/photo%20gallery/Photo%20Gallery.pdf (from the Arizona School Facilities Board)

Would it be acceptable to crop the images from this PDF file, upload them as fair use, and credit the architect or district that sent it in? Are school districts' photos government works at all or public domain, or are they copyrighted by the district?

I couldn't use all the images. Some are unacceptably low quality, some don't show the front in a good way, and some are out of date showing construction phases. But others (for instance, the first page, Desert Edge High School) would be LOVELY to add. Raymie (tc) (originally 04:56, 27 March 2011) (crossposted 01:32, 28 March 2011 (UTC))

Wyatt Earp was listed as a GA in April, then went through a GAR and was delisted. It is now going through another GAN. Wyatt Earp is one of Wikipedia's most popular articles and is on an important and complex topic. The GAN is on an initial seven day hold while the reviewer checks sources. Meanwhile there is some work to be done on trimming back excessive detail, and on making the article flow more by reducing the amount of subsections. See Talk:Wyatt Earp/GA3 for more detail. Hi. Can someone please remove the redirect from the Arizona Daily Sun to Lee Enterprises? The newspaper needs its own page! ThanksZigzig20s (talk) 07:38, 12 July 2011 (UTC)

Same for the Phoenix Business Journal that gets redirected to American City Business Journals.Zigzig20s (talk) 07:44, 12 July 2011 (UTC)
A better course of action is to leave the redirects in place until someone is willing and able to actually create appropriate articles. Neither redirect is protected so anyone is able to edit/replace the redirect with an actual article (see Help:Redirect#How it appears to the user if you do not know how to access the actual redirect). --Allen3 talk 10:16, 12 July 2011 (UTC)
I was going to create them. Can you remove the redirects first? Thanks!Zigzig20s (talk) 10:25, 12 July 2011 (UTC)
There is no need to "remove the redirects first". You can edit the redirects just like any other article. Just go to the redirect (see my comments above if you do not know how) and click the edit tab. --Allen3 talk 11:14, 12 July 2011 (UTC)

I started by trying to tidy up the dab page at Ash Creek but went on to try to sort out the many "San Carlos River"s, which were initially all pointing to the one in the Falkland Islands (until I renamed it and created the dab page at base name).

I have a problem in the USA: Gila nigra talks about "Populations have been recognized from the mainstream Gila River (above confluence with Mangus Creek) in New Mexico, this includes West, Middle and East forks of the Gila River, along with the San Carlos River (a tributary to the Gila)." But the Gila River article has no San Carlos listed among its tributaries. It gets a mention in Gila County, Arizona as forming part of the county's boundary. Are these references to the same San Carlos River? I've assumed so, and dabbed it as "..(United States)". If you know otherwise, please correct. Perhaps someone would like to create an article about the river to turn the red links blue? Or perhaps it has an alternative name and just needs a redirect? I know nothing about Arizona, so I leave it to you. Thanks. PamD (talk) 17:16, 14 July 2011 (UTC)

Suggestion to pull this project under WikiProject United States

Someone recently suggested that this project be included in the list of projects supported by WikiProject United States. After reviewing the project it appears that there have been some recent active discussion on the talk page and some updates to the main project page. The project has been added to the list of supported projects but before I fully implement this I want to ensure that the members of the project concur with this action. I will contact each of the active members of the project and ask them to comment as well. Please feel free to contact me if there are any comments or questions. --Kumioko (talk) 02:17, 5 August 2011 (UTC)

What would that entail? Titoxd(?!? - cool stuff) 22:57, 7 August 2011 (UTC)
Good Question. First let me say that the project page with members stay basically as they are with the members able to dictate how things happen, scope of the project, etc. Its not going to be absorbed or dissolved in any way and the scope won't change unless the members want it too. The only change would be that the WikiProject banner would be replaced with the WPUS banner with WikiProject Arizona (and any other supported projects) embedded within it. You can take a look at Category talk:Visitor attractions in South Carolina to see an example. All the projects use a standard group of parameters (Needs infobox, image, attention, etc) it also reduces the number of banners cluttering up the talk page of the articles. All the projects use the same article classes (If the project doesn't want to though thats ok too but the rest do and I would like to try and keep it as standard as possible).
How it will be supported can depend on what the members of the project want but typically WPUS is a bigger project with a lot more members, it has a newsletter, a monthly collaboration, multiple bots that run actively through the articles for various things (as can be seen on the members page) with more being setup as we go along. This means that it will be seen by a lot of people in a lot of ways. Up till now we have mostly been concentrating on building up the project but soon we are going to be starting to do some drives to build up articles, create new ones, etc. I hope this helps. --Kumioko (talk) 23:04, 7 August 2011 (UTC)

Nutrioso, Arizona name origins

Allow me to introduce three creatures named the Nutria:

1) The Otter. The Spanish word is "Nutria". There are no Otters in Arizona.

2) The Nutria. A South American Rodent that also did not appear in Arizona in the 1800's.

3) The Beaver. Per Byrd Granger, the author of "Arizona Place Names", the most respected source for information on the foundation of towns in Arizona, the Spanish word for Beaver is "Nutria". Granger is wrong.

Sooo... His authoritative statement as to the origin of the name "Nutrioso" is very likely Toro Merde. How should I handle that without getting in Original Research territory? - Richfife (talk) 00:46, 7 December 2011 (UTC)

There were (and are?) river otters in Arizona in the nineteenth century; see, for example, [1]. So, it seems possible that this was simply an inadvertent mistranslation and he meant "otter". However, there were also many beavers at that time; see, for example, [2]. Indeed, there was even a Beaver Creek, Arizona. Regarding Nutrioso itself, I find one source that claims "Nutrioso, a ranch sixteen miles southeast of Springerville, which had been named in Spanish for the otter and the bear...", but most other sources, including ones that predate him, agree with Granger. One book from 1921 even notes that "The name is a combination of nutria (Sp., otter) and oso (Sp., bear). "Nutria" was applied to the beaver, of which there were many" (emphasis mine). For other sources mentioning the beaver connection, see [3], [4], [5], [6], [7], etc. I think it is safe to favor the beaver interpretation, but it would be a good idea to address the confusion by mentioning some other sources. Dominic·t 01:29, 7 December 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for doing this legwork! I'm impressed. I spoke to my wife, who's native Spanish, and she said that Nutria can be used as a catch-all phrase for anything beaver-otter-swamprat like (kind of like the way Buffalo gets thrown around in English) and it's probably in that context that the term showed up here. - Richfife (talk) 05:09, 7 December 2011 (UTC)

Hi, guys. I'm not sure how active your project is, but we've got some serious copyright problems with a few articles related to your project - including one of "top" importance. :/

The volunteer response team which handles most email directed to the Wikimedia Foundation received a letter indicating copyright concerns iwth an article where content has been copied from a book. Investigation reveals extensive issues with multiple articles from this book, dating back to 2005. The articles involved include:

More may be discovered later, but that's all I've found so far.

We may wind up losing these articles or major parts of them unless people are willing to help rewrite them. The contributor who added the content was working, as many of us do, under a pseudonym, and he is not email enabled, but a notice has been left on his talk page requesting that he let us know if he can verify permission. Without permission, we can't reproduce copyrighted text.

I'm so sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but hoping that active editors here may be willing to help out with rewriting these, in case we can't retain them as they are. Rewrites have to be done carefully; text added by contributors other than User:Wikispork can be retained, but only if it doesn't build off of content provided by Wikispork. Modifying copyrighted content creates a derivative work. Content added by Wikispork should not be retained or modified for that reason. The information can be completely rewritten from scratch, but that needs to be carefully done. It's not a good idea, for instance, to do it incrementally, sentence by sentence. Odds are that doing this will retain the structure of the original, which can also be a copyright problem.

These articles will be blanked for at least a week, unless permission arrives. As soon after that as possible, they'll be processed. If you want to rewrite one and need more time, please let me know at my talk page as that deadline approaches, and I'll "relist" it to extend the period. If you've got any questions about this at all, please feel free to come by my talk page.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news! --Moonriddengirl (talk) 13:32, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

Discussion to remove the Automatically assessed logic from the WikiProject United States template

Greetings, there is a discussion regarding removal of the logic used to populate Automatically assessed article categories from Template:WikiProject United States. Most of the categories (over 220 Wikipedia wide) were deleted in February 2013 because they were empty. These categories were previously populated by a bot that hasn't run since 2011 and the categories aren't used. Removal of this uneeded/unused logic will greatly reduce the size and complexity of the WikiProject United States template. Any comments or questions are encouraged here. Kumioko (talk) 18:18, 28 August 2013 (UTC)

Lest there is any confusion for people who don't speak the same language, the words "logic used to populate Automatically assessed article categories" refer to the feature that was supposed to allow this WikiProject's template to "inherit" class and importance ratings from other WikiProjects. Kumioko says that there are no longer any bots performing the function that formerly copied those ratings. --Orlady (talk) 22:53, 31 August 2013 (UTC)

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

WikiProject X is live!

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

Arizona history image files subject to deletion

The file File:WellsSpicer.JPG has been listed at Wikipedia:Possibly unfree files because its copyright status is unclear or `disputed. An editor believes that because the photo taken before 1885 does not have an author or an initial publication date, it should be removed. This is true of many, many Old West images about events in Arizona. If the file's copyright status cannot be verified, it and many others like it related to Arizona history may be deleted. You may find more information on the file description page. You are welcome to add comments to its entry at the discussion if you object to the listing for any reason. Suggestion

Hello all! I was curious if anyone else thought it might be a good idea to make a (nonbinding) guideline on how all the individual US state WikiProjects should organize themselves, to help standardize them. I originally put this suggestion in the WikiProject United States talk page, so feel free to look there if you're interested. It's pretty empty though; basically all they said was to see what each of the individual projects thought about it. Please tell me if you have any concerns with this idea; hopefully we can find a way for everyone to love it! Also, I'm new at making proposals, so please forgive me if I do anything silly. :) Hope that you like this idea! JonathanHopeThisIsUnique (talk) 04:59, 3 August 2015 (UTC)

Edit request for Arizona-based DriveTime

Hi, I'm Chris from DriveTime. Since DriveTime is based out of Tempe, Arizona, I wanted to post here to see if any editors interested in Arizona-related articles can help bring DriveTime's article in line with Wikipedia's standards. The existing article contains significant issues that I've outlined on the Talk page. I created a full draft in my user space that would make this entry more appropriate for Wikipedia.

I posted my draft on January 29, 2016. A reviewing editor took a look at my proposal in early February and agreed my draft was a move in the right direction. The editor didn't have time to fulfill the request, so I've posted requests at WikiProject Companies, WikiProject Automobiles and Wikipedia:Teahouse. No editors from those places decided to take up the request.

Can somebody here give it a look? I think if you read the existing article, you'll see that this needs attention. And I think you'll see my draft brings this in line with other company articles on Wikipedia. As I've said since I first started on Wikipedia, I take Wikipedia's guideline on conflict of interest and paid editing policy seriously. That's why I'm posting on these Talk pages and not directly editing the article.

Thank you, CP at DriveTime (talk) 07:17, 11 March 2016 (UTC)
