Project notice
I've created {{WikiProject Anime and manga}} for use on relevant talk pages. Please apply liberally ;-) —Kirill Lokshin 02:52, 17 January 2006 (UTC)
- if that's too long to type, just use {{anime}} or {{manga}} as appropriate, which redirect to the above template.--み使い Mitsukai 22:20, 14 February 2006 (UTC)
How can I join?
How do I become a part of this Wikiproject? fizzy
Simply add your name to the Participants section on the project page. - Squilibob 04:42, 4 February 2006 (UTC)- That's been changed. To add yourself to the project add the following to your userpage.
- [[Category:WikiProject Anime and manga participants|{{subst:PAGENAME}}]]
- Or you can add {{User WP Anime}} to your user page. --Squilibob 04:24, 14 March 2006 (UTC)
Some opinions, please
Please check out the following articles. I've listed what I think is wrong with them in parentheses.
- Blade for Barter (seems more like an advertisement than NPOV)
- Jason DeAngelis (vanity)
Thanks for your time. --nihon 05:09, 4 February 2006 (UTC)
- Blade for Barter: In my opinion it doesn't go out of its way to advertise and not many pages link to it. It is in one of the lists of Template:Opentask and therefore lots of people may be verifying it anyway. There are similar articles that should most probably be deleted because they are advertising, look at some of JAST USA's products. May Club looks like advertising for example.
- Jason DeAngelis is just a stub, again not much links to it. It could be a candidate for merging with the company article

Template: Nihongo and beginning of articles
At the beginning of anime articles should we be using the Template: Nihongo for the english, japanese and romanji? After sifting through the talk page for the template, I've read that it performs formatting by bolding the english and italicising the japanese automatically and can hide the japanese if the user's OS does not support it. The problem is that I've never seen an anime article use it. - Squilibob 23:38, 5 February 2006 (UTC)
- I believe Slayers does. —Kirill Lokshin 23:40, 5 February 2006 (UTC)
- I've already redone that for all the Bleach characters.--み使い Mitsukai 01:56, 6 February 2006 (UTC)
- Totally missed that, only just edited it recently too. It seems that it does not automatically bold the english and so would be less useful at the beginning of articles. There seems to be no standard for title formating at the beginning of anime articles. Some people use English name (Japanese Romanji) and others use English name (Japanese Romanji) with no italics in the actual title. - Squilibob 00:04, 6 February 2006 (UTC)
- OK, I'm a little late.... if you put ''' or ''''' around the whole template, they will only affect the first word (the kanji will be normal and the romaji, if present, will be in italic as is standard). So basically, just replace the title with the template and whatever format is currently present will remain unchanged. So, to pick an article at random, the first line of He is My Master is currently
- '''He is My Master''' (これが私の御主人様 ''Kore ga Watashi no Goshujin-sama'')
- Which gives you
- He is My Master (これが私の御主人様 Kore ga Watashi no Goshujin-sama)
- To Nihongify it you do this:
- '''{{nihongo|He is My Master|これが私の御主人様|Kore ga Watashi no Goshujin-sama}}'''
- Which gives you
- He is My Master (これが私の御主人様, Kore ga Watashi no Goshujin-sama)

Japanese spelling
First of all I dont mean to come of rude but I have a question i have had for some time. I do not understand why their such an emphasis made on providing japanese spelling for all material that originated from Japan. Its understandable if the article speaks of something solely only found in Japan but why do all this english translated/dubbed/broadcasted anime programs make so much reference to japanese/japanese original translation titles. I hope i didnt come off too vulgar but I was just curious. Tutmosis 20:21, 14 February 2006 (UTC)
- I think the biggest reason is because there are a lot of people interested in the "original Japanese." Granted, not everyone is interested, but we are providing it so that if they are interested, it's there for them to use. Those who aren't interestd will simply ignore it. --nihon 21:20, 14 February 2006 (UTC)
- I agree with Tutmosis, it sounds like a job for Wiktionary Gerard Foley 02:10, 17 February 2006 (UTC)
- Wiktionary is specifically for definitions. Providing the Japanese for a specific title of something that originated in Japan is not defining it, but simply providing the Japanese for interested parties. It's an encyclopedic thing, and is especially important when the English version differes from the original Japanese. Providing both assists people in their research. --日本穣 19:07, 6 March 2006 (UTC)
- Wikitonary wouldn't be the place for that. Even though this is the English Wikipedia site, since the material being talked about is Japanese then makes total sense to me to include Japanese spelling. If you are doing research on something from anime then this is exactly the kind of thing that is useful. If you search other places after coming here, but search only the "official" English spelling then you probably won't find all there is to find. Or if you started from outside Wikipedia and want to know if info you found is talking about the same character as an article here, but the first article had the original Japanese name.
- Also if there are lots of different spellings for the English version this can also tell the reader a little bit about how strict the translation and / or "Americanization" (in the case of some) of the script was. All in all it seems useful information to me. -- Ned Scott 19:19, 6 March 2006 (UTC)
- If by "Japanese spelling" you mean the Japanese language equivalent of the term such as 櫻花 (sakurabana, Cherry Blossom) they are very good to include in articles. I will often search the wikipedia in rōmaji simply to find the correct kanji for a term that I'm looking for. (I'll also use it to get a quick link to the Japanese wikipedia.) Japanese is full of homographs. Say if I were looking up information on Ri Koran the pseudonym of a famous WWII Japanese singer/actress/politician from Manchukou. Her name could be written a few different ways in Kanji: 紅蘭 or 紅鸞. --Kunzite 22:59, 12 March 2006 (UTC)

Infobox Anime convention
I've been looking at redoing Template:Infobox Anime convention for the past couple of days. I mainly want to prevent text from poorly wrapping when it is too wide for the table cell--particularly the location. I also like to make the image and official_website parameters optional. But with 38 pages currently using the infobox, this isn't something I'm going into lightly.
To currently see what I'm doing with the infobox, you can check out my Sandbox--TheFarix 04:00, 17 February 2006 (UTC)
- Template:Infobox Anime convention has been revised, however, I have made it backwards compatible so that it will not break the old infobox that most articles are still using. I would like some input on the instructions on how to use the new infobox. Currently those instructions are still in my Sandbox. Feel free to revise the instructions if you think that something needs to be reworded for clarity or see a spelling or grammar mistake.--TheFarix 15:08, 18 February 2006 (UTC)
Anime convention listing requirements
Mitsukai and I have been discussing the basic requirements that a convention should meet before it can be placed on the list of anime conventions. However, we would like to have more input from others. Please leave your comments at Talk:List of anime conventions.--TheFarix 02:22, 18 February 2006 (UTC)
Question
Does just adding the {{WikiProject Anime and manga}} to the top of the talk page automatically add it to the project? Crampy20 13:58, 4 March 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, pretty much. But you need to add the template to the Talk (discussion) page of an article, not the article itself. -- Y Ynhockey || Talk Y 14:16, 4 March 2006 (UTC)
- From what I understand, it means that one or more members of the WikiProject plans to maintain the article. --TheFarix 16:49, 4 March 2006 (UTC)
- Oh yes yes i knew i had to put in the talk page i was unsure about Subscription
- First of all, don't make changes to the format of someone else's reply, even if it is with the best of intentions. After all, I was, I was replying to your base post, not to Ynhockey. Second, what exactly do you mean by Subscription? There is no category associated with the {{WikiProject Anime and manga}} tag, if that is what you are referring to. --TheFarix 21:11, 4 March 2006 (UTC)
- Ok I've created Category:WikiProject Anime and manga. Any article that has the project notice {{WikiProject Anime and manga}} on the talk page will be listed there.--TheFarix 21:46, 9 March 2006 (UTC)
- Should this talk page be under this category? And should this project be under the category as well or is it fine under Wikiprojects cat? - Squilibob 00:30, 10 March 2006 (UTC)
- Adding this talk page would seem a bit redundant and I don't think the category for the project needs to change either. The project could be added to the new category, but I'll leave that up to someone else to determine.--TheFarix 01:12, 10 March 2006 (UTC)
Participants section
Should the Participants section be moved to its own page or something? I'm sick of fixing up the columns so they're equal sizes - Squilibob 05:08, 7 March 2006 (UTC)
- Sounds good to me. (^_^) --日本穣 20:18, 7 March 2006 (UTC)
- So move it to Wikipedia:WikiProject Anime and manga/Participants or is there some sort of template we can use to automatically sort and list such information? - Squilibob 04:13, 8 March 2006 (UTC)
- Create Category:WikiProject Anime and manga participants, then change {{User WP Anime}} to add anyone who uses it into the category.--TheFarix 15:08, 9 March 2006 (UTC)
- Category made! Gerard Foley 15:22, 9 March 2006 (UTC)
- It would have been better had my idea received more discussion and support first.--TheFarix 18:16, 9 March 2006 (UTC)
- Be Bold. It's a small change that is easy to undo. Gerard Foley 23:56, 9 March 2006 (UTC)
- It's just that in hindsight, Category:Participants in WikiProject Anime and manga may have been a better name.--TheFarix 00:44, 10 March 2006 (UTC)
- It's never too late or too hard to change it. - Squilibob 00:51, 10 March 2006 (UTC)
- It's just that in hindsight, Category:Participants in WikiProject Anime and manga may have been a better name.--TheFarix 00:44, 10 March 2006 (UTC)
Before going around add notifying some participates of the change, I want other's opinion of the notice:
You are listed as a participant of WikiProject Anime and manga. A recent change in how participants are listed — using a category — will result in your inadvertent removal from the project. If you wish to continue your participantion, please check the the project page for details on how to add yourself back to the project.
--TheFarix 22:50, 9 March 2006 (UTC)
- Excellent, good idea.
removedand add removal however. - Squilibob 00:21, 10 March 2006 (UTC)
- A-D has been notified. I'll wait a bit before notifying any more people before I get accused of spamming, or someone else can notify some that are left. ;) --TheFarix 00:30, 11 March 2006 (UTC)
- E-M done. - Squilibob 01:17, 11 March 2006 (UTC)
No need to post anything on my page as I'm already switched to the new method. (^_^) --日本穣 01:22, 11 March 2006 (UTC)
- I actually compared the old list to who has already been placed in the category. I'm still debating if the old list should be kept for "historic" reason, just moved over to the category like WP:WSS did. --TheFarix 01:32, 11 March 2006 (UTC)
Character listing conventions
I'm a little unsure on what the conventions on listing characters are. Some pages make it into a tertiary heading (ie the "===" tags) such as the current ToHeart page, while others will keep the character names bolded only, such as the Rozen Maiden article. In both they are both followed by a description and other information about the characters.
In articles with numerous characters, perhaps the former elongates the contents page too much. However, it does look much better given the font size and the bold typeface applied to the character's names.
I am referring to the 7th March and 8th March edits of ToHeart2 and ToHeart.
Is there a set convention here which we can all follow? I would personally prefer the latter, as the character descriptions do not seem to be long enough to warrent their own sections.
Karn-b 03:11, 8 March 2006 (UTC)
- In my opinion, if all the characters need their own sections then they could probably have their own articles. Devoting an entire section to a character means that there should be enough information to warrant it's own article.
- ToHeart is a really bad example. That character section is as you said, making the TOC huge unneccessarily. Rozen Maiden is an excellent example of a good character layout.
- There are a few conventions though I wouldn't call them set conventions, they're just what's happening with anime articles
- Pages with a small amount of info on a small amount of characters are kept on the main article. Rozen Maiden is the example for this.
- Pages with a small amount of info on a large amount of characters are split onto pages called List of characters from such and such series which in turn can be split again like List of Dragon Ball characters.
- Then there are character pages that need their own article, like Belldandy for example.
- I think that any pages using the tertiary heading tags should be changed into one of these three. - Squilibob 04:13, 8 March 2006 (UTC)
- I don't think there is any set style guild on how to organize anime related articles at this time, and what few guidelines exists are scattered across the talk page or in other MoSs. Perhaps one should be created and included into the WikiProject's page.--TheFarix 04:21, 8 March 2006 (UTC)
- I would recommend the layout I put forward in Spirited Away. The characters are presented with their names and original kanji in brackets (with romanization and literal meaning) and the indenting keeps it neat. The Rozen Maiden layout is good too. - Phorque 05:24, 8 March 2006 (UTC)
- Any series with many characters should probably have a separate page called Characters in X series (or, if it has no descriptions, List of characters in X series). The layout on that page could vary. A good one can be found at Characters in Bleach series, although its TOC is possibly too long and all Gotei 13 divisions may have to be united. -- Y Ynhockey || Talk Y 05:51, 8 March 2006 (UTC)
Actually while we are on the subject of Character listing. Is there a template that outputs something like the following:
- Japanese names are given in the western order, given name first
It would be handy if there was such a template. I couldn't find it on the list. It may be worthwhile to use one for standardizations sake. - Squilibob 14:58, 11 March 2006 (UTC)
- It would be helpful for standardization. We could link it to the style guides. I'm so used to writing in Japanese order. I'm now having to go back to old edits and fix names. --Kunzite 03:59, 14 March 2006 (UTC)
The article Glomp has been nominated for AFD a second time. Please weigh in on it if you are so inclined; alternately, you may wish to join the effort to clean up the article.--み使い Mitsukai 23:28, 8 March 2006 (UTC)
Splitting articles
On the bottom of the Bleach article, there is a box containing a list of different articles on Bleach, with links to sections within the article. What is this called, and how can one be created?
Karn-b 16:54, 10 March 2006 (UTC)
- The Bleach infobox at the bottom, if that's what you mean, does not link to sections within the article, but only to different articles. However, if it's not what you meant, I'll answer both questions:
- To make an infobox, you should first create a template, like Template:Bleach info, then add {{Bleach info}} (or whatever other name) to any pages where you want the infobox to be displayed.
- To link to sections within an article, you can use anchors, as in: [[Bleach (manga)#Quincy|Quincy]], which will link you to the Quincy section of Bleach (manga).
- Finally, don't forget that you can click edit this page on any given page and see how it was made.
- -- Y Ynhockey (Talk) Y 17:21, 10 March 2006 (UTC)
- And also use {{subst:doctl}} on the talk page when you create a template please. - Squilibob 01:17, 11 March 2006 (UTC)
While sorting through some of the articles to see which ones can be destub, I happened across several articles that have been double stubbed with both {{anime-stub}} and {{Japan-voice-actor-stub}}. Since the two are closely related, I've made the category for {{{{Japan-voice-actor-stub}} a subcategory for Category:Anime and manga stubs. The question I have is, can the stubs be trimmed down to just one? In this case, to just {{Japan-voice-actor-stub}}. Are there any real benefits to stub these articles with both {{anime-stub}} and {{Japan-voice-actor-stub}}?--TheFarix (Talk) 23:07, 14 March 2006 (UTC)
- I agree, there is little benefit as {{anime-stub}} is really just for anime productions, that's why anime company stubs aren't put under the anime stub. Alternatively you could make a new type of stub just for anime seiyǔ and instead use that. --Squilibob 07:55, 15 March 2006 (UTC)
- Would that be redundant? After all, a "Japanese voice actor" would likely be an anime seiyǔ as well. The two seems to closely related to justify a separate stub.--TheFarix (Talk) 11:55, 15 March 2006 (UTC)
- I was assuming that movies dubbed into Japanese would have Japanese voice actors that would be put into the same category. --Squilibob 12:06, 15 March 2006 (UTC)
- Would that be redundant? After all, a "Japanese voice actor" would likely be an anime seiyǔ as well. The two seems to closely related to justify a separate stub.--TheFarix (Talk) 11:55, 15 March 2006 (UTC)
Just requesting some peer review
Hey everyone. I just created an article on the manga and upcoming anime Black Lagoon. If anyone would be so kind as to look it over for stylistic or formatting errors, that would be awesome. Thanks!--Zaorish 06:23, 17 March 2006 (UTC)
To Do list
I've moved the to do list so that it intergrates with the {{WikiProject Anime and manga}} template. --Squilibob 01:50, 18 March 2006 (UTC)
Reducing size of Category:Anime
I've been thinking about how best to reduce Category:Anime. The current scheme has been to divide everything into Anime series, Anime OVA, and Anime films. However, I don't think this will be enough, especially with the possibility of several anime being cross categorized in at least two if not all three categories. As an alternative I propose sorting based on the anime's genre:
- Action anime, Adventure anime, Comedy anime, Drama anime, Fantasy anime, Harem anime, Historical anime, Horror anime (already created), Magical girl anime, Martial arts anime, Mecha anime, Mystery anime, Romance anime, School anime, Science fiction anime, Sports anime
The naming scheme follows Horror anime which already exists. With more categories, problems with a single category growing too large because of cross categorization should no longer be a problem. --TheFarix (Talk) 22:57, 19 March 2006 (UTC)
- That sounds good, there will still be cross categorization but the categories will be much smaller in size. --Squilibob 23:59, 19 March 2006 (UTC)
- I'm still going to wait a couple of days before creating any of the categories. That should allow others to propose alterations to my scheme. --TheFarix (Talk) 00:49, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
I'm very much in favor of this plan. (^_^) --日本穣 04:42, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
I like the plan in principle, but think the first scheme (series, OVA, films) is generally better. The reason is, series/OVA/films is a more straight-forward category than genres and offers much less confusion - basically any user can categorize like that, while not all users may immediately understand the genre of the anime/manga (based on the article). However, this does not stop us from also making genre-based categories and having more than one category for each article. -- Y Ynhockey (Talk) Y 15:44, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
- The categories have been created. I'm already in the proccess of recategorizing some of the anime, But there are plenty that I don't know which genre they should go it. --TheFarix (Talk) 13:00, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
- At Category:Anime by genre. The existing Shōjo and Shōnen categories might have to be renamed. Especially since the shōjo article is now called shōjo manga. --Squilibob 13:10, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
- That article should probably be moved back to Shōjo as it encompasses both anime and manga. What was the reason of moving it to Shōjo Manga in the first place? --TheFarix (Talk) 13:41, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
- Don't know, it was mentioned in this talk. From the articles I've redirected, most do in fact relate exclusively to shōjo manga. --Squilibob 15:04, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
- Maybe because editors of anime articles never thought to link to it. Still, I don't think the renaming is justified. --TheFarix (Talk) 15:13, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
- What are we doing with Category:Anime series now? Can we use that for anime that are part of a series or are standalone anime, OVAs and movies still going to be included. Are we trying to reduce that too or not? --Squilibob 15:04, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
- I'm leaving it alone. But when I can remember, I move it before the genre categories. --TheFarix (Talk) 15:13, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
- New Category:Supernatural anime created because I noticed quite a few anime that didn't fit very well into either fantasy, mystery or horror. Examples are Tsukuyomi - Moon Phase, ×××HOLiC, Karin, E's Otherwise and Psychic Academy. --TheFarix (Talk) 16:31, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
Category:Anime is now at 428 articles and dropping. That is smaller then Category:Anime series, which has 474 articles. Some of the articles will probably stay in Category:Anime because they are too general to but in a subcatagory.
Anyways, I've just finished G and will probably start on H later. But I need some rest first. Fill free to sort the articles I skipped over or correct anything I miscategorized. --TheFarix (Talk) 23:49, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
- I can't believe that you've done so many already. --Squilibob 02:19, 23 March 2006 (UTC)
- That's what I get when I don't get called out to work today. It's tedious, but not all that hard. I do great when I don't spend time tinkering with the articles. ^_^; Oh well, I'm going to plow through the L's and then call it a night. --TheFarix (Talk) 03:06, 23 March 2006 (UTC)
FINISHED! I'm sure I've made mistakes along the way by placing an anime in a genre that it doesn't belong or left it out of a genre, so feel free to correct them as you see them. But don't ask me to sort Category:Manga. At least not for a few weeks. --TheFarix (Talk) 14:58, 24 March 2006 (UTC)
There are a lot of requested articles I've been finding and cataloging over on Wikipedia:Requested articles/Japan, far more than appear in this category. Feel free to add more to this page, too. I've been going through the various related lists and listing all of the redlinks there. I've also created a bunch of redirects from some requests to the articles that already exist. --日本穣 04:44, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
