Pageview stats

After a recent request, I added WikiProject Animals to the list of projects to compile monthly pageview stats for. The data is the same used by http://stats.grok.se/en/ but the program is different, and includes the aggregate views from all redirects to each page. The stats are at Wikipedia:WikiProject Animals/Popular pages.

The page will be updated monthly with new data. The edits aren't marked as bot edits, so they will show up in watchlists. You can view more results, request a new project be added to the list, or request a configuration change for this project using the toolserver tool. If you have any comments or suggestions, please let me know. Thanks! Mr.Z-man 01:11, 1 December 2009 (UTC)

Distribution map How-to page

FYI, I've created a little tutorial for how to make those nifty species distribution maps that people sometimes add to taxoboxes: Wikipedia:Distribution maps. Enjoy. Kaldari (talk) 23:25, 1 December 2009 (UTC)

Book-Class

Since several couple of Wikipedia-Books are animal-related, could this project adopt the book-class? This would really help WikiProject Wikipedia-Books, as the WP Animals people can oversee books like Cat much better than we could as far as merging, deletion, content, and such are concerned. Eventually there probably will be a "Books for discussion" process, so that would be incorporated in the Article Alerts.

There's an article in last week's Signpost if you aren't familiar with Wikipedia-Books and classes in general. If you have any questions just ask. Thanks. Headbomb {ταλκκοντριβς – WP Physics} 01:16, 9 December 2009 (UTC)

Alright I went ahead and implemented this for the project. You currently have 9 animal-related books, which can all be found in Category:Book-Class animal articles. Headbomb {ταλκκοντριβς – WP Physics} 23:22, 21 January 2010 (UTC)

Please Help!

I am part of a group involved in developing a stub article into a GA article as part of an AP Biology project. We edited the Pudu page, and it is ready for a GA review. No one has come along to review it yet, and our grade is riding on this. We would greatly appreciate a GA review, especially from one of your members as the article is listed on your page. Thanks!Lisa Anne93 (talk) 14:13, 18 December 2009 (UTC)

I'm seeing an issue right in the lead (introduction). Why do you give the scientific name Pudu puda (a binomial name) for an article about a genus? I will proofread the article for other possible issues; however, I do not feel I can formally review it. Intelligentsium 22:36, 18 December 2009 (UTC)
I also see some awkward wording, for example, what is meant by "There is a debate concerning the etymology of the name, but many forms are considered correct." Forms? I have corrected one instance. Other issues: "Uncommonly seen in its natural habitat...", by humans, you mean. In the same sentence you repeat the same idea thrice, only adding a bit more each time. Is the correct plural of Pudú "pudú" or "pudús"? "...much of which consists of crisscrossing well-trodden paths" is also unclear—well-trodden by whom? Humans or pudu? The sentence "Maternal neglect as newborns and a wide range of diseases can decrease the population.", last paragraph under #Social is awkward. I also have qualms about the reliability of this commercial source. Many of the sentences are choppy. I also do not understand what is meant by "must outcompete" (#Causes of endangerment). Do you mean "are outcompeted" or "must compete"? Intelligentsium 23:24, 18 December 2009 (UTC)
Copied to talk page. Intelligentsium 23:39, 18 December 2009 (UTC)

Animal welfare

Would this wikiProject like to adopt the article Animal welfare? It currently has wikiProject templates relating to Cats and Dogs, which seems wrong to me. Yaris678 (talk) 20:16, 18 December 2009 (UTC)

There is a WikiProject Animal rights; that may be more relevant. If that project is inactive, then of course we could adopt it. Intelligentsium 22:32, 18 December 2009 (UTC)
I am dubious about that one. Animal rights people tend to see animal welfare as a concept made up to avoid giving animals their rights. I'm sure people with an interest in animal rights will have something to contribute, but it would help to have people with an interest in animals more generally. Yaris678 (talk) 22:40, 18 December 2009 (UTC)
Not necessarily; in any case, WikiProject Animal rights is not made up of animal rights activists, but of people seeking to improve coverage of Animal rights articles, and who may have special knowledge in that field. That project is as neutral as any part of Wikipedia—in fact, it is their job to cover Criticism of animal rights fairly. Animal welfare is probably a topic that could be covered by both projects. You may wish to leave a note on their project talk page as well. Intelligentsium 22:45, 18 December 2009 (UTC)
