US state during World War II manual infobox

[edit]

Is there an existing infobox template that covers the usage of the manual template used in Arizona during World War II, California during World War II, Nevada during World War II, and New Mexico during World War II? Gonnym (talk) 14:51, 8 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I'll keep looking, but based on how these infoboxes are being used I would say {{Infobox military operation}} isn't unreasonable, even if not really the best option. Primefac (talk) 15:21, 8 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
On the other hand, these infoboxes contain almost no information, so I wouldn't cry over outright removal. Primefac (talk) 15:26, 8 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I mean hell, {{Infobox event}} would work. Primefac (talk) 15:28, 8 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Someone working on manual infoboxes 😭
Anyway, kinda agree with Primefac, I'd be inclined to nix them personally. Izno (talk) 17:15, 8 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I've replaced one with {{Infobox event}} - Arizona during World War II. But yeah, using it seems a bit off as this isn't really an event. Gonnym (talk) 17:20, 8 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Much of the information in the infobox is in the "free" fields, which is a hint that the infobox doesn't fit well. I would advocate for deleting the infoboxes on these articles. — hike395 (talk) 22:41, 8 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Template:N/A interfering with data-sort-value?

[edit]

At the moment, Template:N/A seems to interact poorly with table cells that specify their own data-sort-value, as the template sets data-sort-value="". This is a problem on List of most commonly challenged books in the United States, where the extensive use of the template means that the unlisted books sort to the top, rather than the bottom. Is the template being misused on that page, or should the user be able to define the sort value in the template? EnronEvolvedMy Talk Page 12:26, 13 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Not necessarily misused, just not used ideally. {{n/a}} has a |sort= parameter, which I suspect could be set to something like |sort=101 to get it to sort under everything else. Primefac (talk) 22:07, 13 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't know about that parameter. Is it documented anywhere? I couldn't find it in that template's documentation. EnronEvolvedMy Talk Page 12:24, 14 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately that entire template family uses the same documentation, and if any of the templates don't have that parameter it might mean that we give bad advice. Honestly I'm not overly thrilled with said /doc (I think it's too complex and wordy) so I might see about editing it and possibly adding some #switch statements that will trigger to show parameters for the templates that use them... Primefac (talk) 13:27, 14 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Bumping, mainly for my own notes (and to keep it from being archived). Primefac (talk) 13:35, 18 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Templates that populate categories

[edit]

At Wikipedia talk:Criteria for speedy deletion#C4 – unused maintenance categories there is a discussion of a potential mostly-new speedy deletion criterion that would include "maintenance categories no longer used by a template.", although it is not a formal proposal yet it looks to be headed that way. You are invited to the discussion.

As part of this discussion it has been suggested that it should be encouraged to include a link to template(s) that populate a category from that category's description (i.e. if Template:Foo adds pages to Category:Foos then the description page at Category:Foos should note that it is populated by {{Foo}}). This seems to me to be a good idea independent of the CSD. Thryduulf (talk) 14:21, 24 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Dynamic templates for contextualizing numbers

[edit]

Browsing gwern.net (e.g. this site), I noticed some interesting annotations contextualizing numbers. For example, amounts of money are inflation-adjusted, with the original amount and year shown next to them. Years are annotated with how long ago they were.

When I'm browsing biographies on Wikipedia, I often find myself calculating the person's age whenever a dated life event or work is mentioned, to get a better idea of where it fits in their life. And yes, sometimes also out of a slightly unhealthy urge for comparison.

I started thinking about whether this sort of annotation might make sense in some cases on wikipedia, and where to begin talking about this — are templates the right place? How should I bring this up for discussion or start tinkering on an implementation to demo/suggest? Would be grateful for any pointers/thoughts! Benjaminschneider (talk) 08:47, 4 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I assume you're referring to content such as ...as was the fashion at the time (c. 196559ya)... where the "59ya" is the "contexualised" bit? Yes, we could do that, but it would require changing the WP:MOS to allow for it, because right now I'm not sure that sort of text is acceptable at the moment. Primefac (talk) 12:06, 4 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Benjaminschneider I don't think that the extra clutter on the page is needed. We show birth (and death) date in the lead sentence and we have templates for infoboxes which tell the reader the subject's age today, or at death, and I think we can leave the rest to the reader's arithmetic. Template:W

[edit]

Am I missing something or is Template:W a template that creates a regular wikilink? Gonnym (talk) 09:29, 5 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

No idea but perhaps its main purpose is per the doc image File:Template W for welcome.png which apparently shows bad results when {{w}} redirected to {{welcome}}. Johnuniq (talk) 10:01, 5 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
From what I gather from the /doc, it's a convenience template for when other projects use {{w}} and then the code is copied here directly (much like we have infoboxes written in German for their train templates to be copied directly). I would be okay with making it subst-only here like we do with those other language templates. Primefac (talk) 15:49, 5 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah that sounds like a good solution. I wonder if it really is being copied over here as the commons template looks completely different, but subst is still better than how it is now. Gonnym (talk) 19:24, 5 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Possible new infobox

[edit]

I started a discussion about possibly creating a new infobox for multi-sport events such as the Olympics, figured I'd drop a note here since there may be some template-savvy folk who aren't necessarily also editing in that sphere and could possibly give some thoughts. The discussion is at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Sports § Using an infobox directly in the body and if we should make a new template. Thank you. Primefac (talk) 13:28, 15 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

DynamicPageList exclude parent

[edit]

Bumping a question on an unimplemented feature for DynamicPageList. Are there any templates on Wikipedia which achieve what I am looking for (see question for explanation)? Tule-hog (talk) 17:43, 9 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

{{Special:Prefixindex/Portal:Science/}}? But no, modules do not have access to the information necessary to do what you want (namely, generating the list of pages to begin with). Izno (talk) 18:10, 9 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Can someone help me with Template:Navbox documentation?

[edit]

I wanted to improve this template so that it could also be used in subpages for the documentation, but I did not succeed. KimKelting (talk) 17:10, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You should start ask at the talk page of that template. Also, please test code in the /sandbox version. Gonnym (talk) 17:28, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I asked on the talk page and I also tested the code in the /sandbox version before asking for help here. KimKelting (talk) 18:08, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The timestamp of this is after you posted here. Regarding the test, this broke the template in everyway, so if you did test, please request other editors to implement your changes. Gonnym (talk) 18:17, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Special characters soft redirects

[edit]

I was wondering, since both {{wdr}} and {{R with Wikidata item}} exist, could there be the counterpart of {{R from emoji}}? Maybe there's only one case as far as I know and it eventually could be retargeted (see this talk page talk).

I was thinking in reusing {{Contains special characters|emoticon}} based on Dingbat and Non-binary flag, but I'm not sure if that is allowed. But thinking about that template, it could be used for other soft redirects, such as those including Chinese or Japanese alphabet characters, and among other unicodes.

Or should this be raised in WP:RE? Web-julio (talk) 03:00, 17 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I don't really know or have any sort of opinion here, but please keep pings visible, or indicate the group being pinged – it wasn't clear where it was coming from before checking the page history. Tollens (talk) 03:25, 17 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oh okay, I will be more wise next time. Web-julio (talk) 03:28, 17 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This issue should be raised at the WikiProject Redirect. voorts (talk/contributions) 04:30, 17 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If there's only one case, that might not last, then we have no need of a template for it.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  12:38, 17 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed; rcat templates should generally populate a larger group than a single page. Primefac (talk) 13:44, 17 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
But I also suggested for the other unicodes: ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; 🜮; 🜯; Þussy; Α-cyperone; Οἰκητήριον; ; ; ; ㊙️/. Web-julio (talk) 16:21, 17 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
{{R from Unicode character}} exists for this reason. VanIsaac, GHTV contWpWS 13:53, 17 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think the question is about tagging soft redirects, which that template is not for. Tollens (talk) 14:05, 17 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
