UN

[edit]

Where could I find UN related userboxes? OKelly (talk) 00:31, 27 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The only one I have seen is here: Wikipedia:Userboxes/Military#Peacekeeping_Forces_and_Missions. What were you looking for? - Ahunt (talk) 00:52, 27 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Just general UN support userboxes that I have seen on other user's pages. Can't remember which user pages they were on though. OKelly (talk) 01:14, 27 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Don't worry! I found them finally :) Thanks for your time. OKelly (talk) 01:29, 27 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Where did you find them? Perhaps they need to be better indexed? - Ahunt (talk) 12:07, 27 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Basically I searched "UN Userboxes" whilst on a Wikipedia page and it came up with numerous userspaces which had UN related userboxes. Would it be realistic to create a UN userboxes link on the gallery page? This is a list of those userspaces:
I think those really should be collected into a common page. I can do that, probably tomorrow. - Ahunt (talk) 23:22, 27 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
In doing a bit of sleuthing I found where they all are: Wikipedia:Userboxes/Politics/Issues#United_Nations_.28UN.29 and have added the missing ones there that you found. I have also added it to the gallery listing as a short cut. Hope that will suffice? If not we can still split them off to a separate page if you like. - Ahunt (talk) 15:43, 28 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot for that. I think it would be alright to leave it in the Politics section because there aren't that many of them. OKelly (talk) 22:06, 28 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Glad that was helpful! - Ahunt (talk) 01:44, 29 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Inclusion criteria

[edit]

New userboxes can be presented at Wikipedia talk:Userboxes/New Userboxes, but I was wondering what (if any) the criteria are for including a userbox in the gallery. Thanks in advance, -- Skysmurf  (Talk) 20:11, 22 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Well individual userboxes are not listed on this gallery page, they are listed on pages by category (i.e. sports) and then those category pages are listed in the gallery and also in the user boxes nav box seen at the bottom of each user boxes page. For a user box category page to be listed in the gallery and in the nav box it merely has to exist and not be subject to a consensus that it be removed for any reason. If you have a new user box please feel free to add it to the category page or pages that seem to best apply to it. If you have a new category page then by all means list it here on the gallery page and in the nav box and see if there are any objections. - Ahunt (talk) 20:52, 22 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you -- Skysmurf  (Talk) 21:12, 22 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Glad that you found that helpful! - Ahunt (talk) 13:21, 23 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Previous location

[edit]

I was wondering how to codify places one was used to live in, or was born in. Any ideas? Stefano (talk) 11:39, 24 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Those are at Wikipedia:Userboxes/Location, but you may need to make a new box for your own life history! - Ahunt (talk) 13:27, 24 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Alphabetizing userboxes within galleries

[edit]

@Buaidh: I appreciate what you are trying to do in your recent edits like this one, but the problem with wholesale alphabetization is that it splits sister userboxes apart. In that gallery, for example, {{User Anti-IAR}} should be adjacent to {{User iar}}. Likewise, {{User deletionist}}, {{User delu}}, {{User even}}, {{User exclu}}, {{User exo}}, {{User imm}}, {{User incl}}, {{User increm}}, {{User merge}}, {{User meso}}, {{User meta}}, {{User neut}}, {{User Precis}}, and {{User structure}} should all be together. Is there a way to preserve that while doing your cleanup?

Also, I'd recommend a more explanatory edit summary than "Wikipedia" (the gallery name)—especially since you're changing gallery header and footer templates for some reason.

As a side note, we can eliminate the "Template:" prefix, as that namespace is implied by default by the template syntax. – voidxor 23:43, 19 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your comments. I often sort userbox templates alphabetically in gallery sections. This is basically because we sometimes have userbox sort wars where a few users put their templates ahead of everyone else's. You are right that this often breaks up the logical order of some sections. Please feel free to reorganize these sections in a more logical order.
I designed Template:Yy to assume the prefix Template: on any entry that does not explicitly include its own prefix. I prefer to explicitly add the Template: prefix because I feel it shows exactly where the template resides. We have templates that exist in the Template:, Wikipedia:, User:UBX, as well as individual User: namespaces. Not everyone uses a logical template name, so I think this may reduce some confusion. Your aye,  Buaidh  talk contribs 01:36, 20 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
That's fine; I can group them whenever I spot separated sister userboxes. However, that's a matching game. If you could maybe try to keep them together when alphabetizing, that would save some rework.
I must respectfully disagree on the use of the "Template:" prefix. It adds verbosity and, I feel, makes the code less approachable to new users. See MOS:MARKUP. Since the {{Yy}} template successfully links to template-space userboxes even when the "Template:" prefix is not displayed (and thus not copied and pasted to users' pages), locating where the template resides shouldn't be an issue. WP:UBXNS gives clear instructions for those wishing to create userboxes. – voidxor 16:12, 20 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Trying to add userboxes

[edit]

How do I add userboxes to my userpage?

I notice that it is not as simple as copying and pasting the wikitext.

Thanks for your help!

CheeseCommander (talk) 20:17, 21 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your note. U think the issue is that you are trying to add them on meta.wikimedia.org instead of en.wikipedia.org and the userbox templates don't work on higher level projects. - Ahunt (talk) 20:49, 21 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, that was the issue. For some time, I was unable to edit my page on Wikipedia itself, so I was using meta. Thank you! CheeseCommander (talk) 21:20, 21 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, great. Do you know how to fix that, then ? - Ahunt (talk) 21:32, 21 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
