Article selection discussion

[edit]

Hi Group A! Group D, here. We were wondering if you were considering the fluorescent tag article for your project, seeing that you did an assessment on it. We have not finalized on it but it is one of our top choices so we thought we would check. Thanks! Jberendt (talk) 10:59, 5 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Group D. I apologize for not replying earlier in the day. It appears as if you have already claimed the fluorescent tag article as you've indicated in the article table. We, Group 81A, will remove this from our list of articles to consider accordingly. Awotawa1 (talk) 02:46, 6 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Tiara. Do you have a strong preference for any of the articles still available? I just checked the four articles that we chose for our assessments last week, and currently, they are all still available with the exception of the fluorescent tag article. I think the two articles that I assessed last week, chromosome duplication and silent mutation, both are off to a decent start already and loads of potential for article improvement. However, I'll be happy to work on any of the articles if you have one in mind that you like. Awotawa1 (talk) 02:52, 6 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, guys, I added a heading for your discussion here. Klortho (talk) 13:46, 6 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Tiara, I just checked the article list again to see which ones have already been claimed. Other than the fluorescent tag article, as I mentioned in my previous entry, all of the ones we did assessments on are still up for grabs. Only a few articles have been taken at this point, so if we want to go with something other than the four we've assessed, that shouldn't be a problem if we act soon. Let me know your thoughts so we can get one claimed. Thanks! Awotawa1 (talk) 23:19, 6 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Amy! Sorry for the delay. I think my person pick would be to work on the silent mutation article but I do not strongly prefer one article over the other.

Tbrownc1 (talk) 23:32, 6 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Group D, looks like the fluorescent tag article is all yours! Good luck! Tbrownc1 (talk) 23:32, 6 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Tiara. I agree that the silent mutation article would be a good one to go with. If it's ok with you, I'll claim that one for our group. Per the instructions, I think we also need to write one summary article as a group about our rationale for choosing that article. What are your thoughts on that? Awotawa1 (talk) 01:47, 7 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I just checked the other groups' talk pages to see if anyone else is considering the same article, silent mutation, as us. No one else seems to have an interest in that one, so I'll claim that on our course page for us. We need to get a 200-300 word summary written to describe our rationale for choosing this article. Why did you like this one, Tiara? Awotawa1 (talk) 01:56, 7 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Silent mutation article claimed for Group 81A. Now, we just need to put together the summary on our group page. Awotawa1 (talk) 02:05, 7 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Tiara, I've added our group summary of why we chose our particular article to our group page. Feel free to look it over and add or edit as you wish. Thanks! Awotawa1 (talk) 03:05, 7 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for claiming the silent mutation article as ours. I will look over your summary as to why we chose this article and add my input if necessary. I wasn't sure if we were to write the summary of individually so thanks for clarifying. Tbrownc1 (talk) 03:12, 7 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Amy, everything looks great for our article selection rationale. I'm looking forward to really getting starting on this project!Tbrownc1 (talk) 03:29, 7 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Tiara. I think the project will be a little bit of a challenge with just coordinating time and schedules to get this done properly, but I'm looking forward to working with you as well. For this week, we can work in your sandbox if that's ok and get the preliminaries going with our article. I'll log in tomorrow night with my initial input and materials. Awotawa1 (talk) 04:11, 12 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
YES! Coordinating time and schedules will be somewhat difficult but we will work out the kinks. I cannot access the internet for personal use during the day since I work for the government but I will try to communicate with you as soon as I get home to my computer. We can definitely work in my sandbox this week. I actually would like to get most of this Wiki Assignment done tonight if possible ( I am going out of town on Thursday). Tbrownc1 (talk) 23:34, 12 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Article editing discussion

[edit]

Hey Amy! What are some key points that you think should be discussed in our article or topic already within the article that we should expand? A few topics I think we should expand on are silent mutations role in splicing, silent mutations use in biotechnology or cloning, etc... ( I am currently reviewing some references for more subtopics that we can include). Tbrownc1 (talk) 01:17, 14 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Tiara. I think that we have a very rough outline from which to begin with what's already there for the stub. I think we can expand and refine the introduction section that's already there. As far as subtopics, I like that the author has already began including the informaton on tRNA availablility. I think this section can be expanded and maybe renamed to reflect this concept as relating to the degenerate genetic code (any ideas on a new heading here?). I also think the author made a good choice with listing the effect on mRNA secondary structure. Maybe we can use this section to expand on the effect silent mutations have beginning at the primary sequence level, secondary structure, and through tertiary (and possibly quaternary) protein structure via any differences in protein folding (even something subtle). We should also use the examples section and probably rename it to something like "Silent Mutations and Disease" or something like that. I think there is a lot of room for expansion there. I think your ideas of including info on the role of silent mutations in splicing and used in biotech in general are terrific. Let me know what you think of my ideas here, and maybe we can get an outline put together. I'm going to look for some references to add now. Maybe you can get our rough outline of the article written on your sandbox page in a new section, and I'll gather more references, look for images, and add our plans for the article to the article talk pages. Sound like a plan to you? Awotawa1 (talk) 01:31, 14 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, that sounds good to me.I really like your idea of expanding silent mutation's effect on mRNA secondary structure. I agree on changing the example section to "Silent Mutations and Disease" to make it more specific. I will be thinking of a new name for the tRNA availability section. Tbrownc1 (talk) 01:43, 14 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Just finished the rough outline, check it out and let me know if you want it more detailed. I figure once we really start looking into articles and other references we can adjust our outline as need be and make it more specific. I know you are researching some references tonight, so if you see any more specific subcategories that we can add to what we already have in our outline that would be great. How's is everything looking on your side? Tbrownc1 (talk) 02:40, 14 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Tiara. The outline looks great, and it gives us a framework from which to begin. We can flesh it out as we progress. I only made one minor edit to one of the headings. I added a couple of references and a link to an image to your sandbox page, and I'll continue to try to find more sources in the coming days. I'll go to the article page now and add our plan for the article for others to see and comment on. Thank you so much! Awotawa1 (talk) 02:50, 14 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
No problem, I'll check out everything on my sandbox page. Unit 8-9 Wiki Assignment seems a little in depth so maybe we can get a head start on that when we get a chance. I will be back from out of town on Sunday so I will contact you or vice versa and we can plan out our next steps for that week and how we will divide the work. Thanks again, talk to you soon. Tbrownc1 (talk) 02:57, 14 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Tiara, I'm actually leaving on Monday to go to NH and won't be back until Thurs. I'm taking my laptop, but I don't think I'll be able to get much done while I'm there. So, don't be alarmed if you don't hear from me right away during that time. I'll play catch up when I get back if I need to. Awotawa1 (talk) 03:05, 14 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Just a note -- It's good to break up long discussions like this into separate sections. For example, when you finished with selecting and article and started discussing edits, you could have created a new section. You could add a header now, if you want. The reason is that it helps others who might want to join in, or yourselves if you want to look back through a discussion. Klortho (talk) 18:28, 14 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the advice, Klortho. Tbrownc1 (talk) 23:31, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Initial substantial edits discussion

[edit]
Hey Amy, just wondering how you would like to divide up the 8 to 10 paragraphs of new information for the article? Tbrownc1 (talk) 23:31, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, Tiara. I think if you want to take the first and second section of the outlines, I'll take the third section of our outline. So, I think the definition/history/background can probably be one paragraph (but feel free to make it two if you deem it necessary), and the current news can probably be just a single paragraph (again totally at your discretion). The second section of our outline pertains to the relationship of silent mutations and the degeneracy of the genetic code. You might have a couple of paragraphs for that. I'll take the third section, which I'm thinking will probably be about 4 paragraphs (one for each level of protein structure). We can work on the other sections later. I think this will give us a good start. What do you think? Awotawa1 (talk) 05:28, 4 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That works for me. We also have to submit a brief progress report. I guess we can check in around 9:30pm central time to see how our individual paragraphs are going and decide who has time to do the progress report. Tbrownc1 (talk) 22:34, 4 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds like a plan. We'll check in at 9:30. Thanks! Awotawa1 (talk) 00:11, 5 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'm going to post my extra material and some edits right onto the article page. If there is anything you'd like to change, please do it from there. Thanks. Awotawa1 (talk) 01:17, 5 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I've added four paragraphs to our article page, and re-organized and edited the headings a bit. However, I haven't re-organized all of the headings that were already there yet. I still have to go back in and add my references, but let me know what you think. Awotawa1 (talk) 02:14, 5 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hey! I saw you added your parts, I am still working on mine. :( Will check yours out when I get done, if I have time. Tbrownc1 (talk) 02:25, 5 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, I see that you've added your edits to the article page. Thanks. Are you finished, or still working? Do you want me to take care of the brief progress report that we have to do, or do you want to handle it? Awotawa1 (talk) 03:19, 5 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'm afraid I haven't found any worthy information to include in the introduction/history/background yet. Found some information about silent mutation's evolution and its role in bacteria but it will take some time to put together. I can do the progress report really quick since i didn't finish all my paragraphs. Do you know if the progress report is suppose to go on our group page or one of our sandboxes? Tbrownc1 (talk) 03:43, 5 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Nevermind, the criteria clearly says group page. Sorry. Tbrownc1 (talk) 03:45, 5 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. We can gather some additional references and material for you in the coming days and weeks. We should also be looking for figures we want to include. Let me know if there's anything else you want me to do tonight. Awotawa1 (talk) 03:49, 5 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Just finished the very brief progress report. Check it out and see if there is anything you want to add based off of Dr.Ogg's guideline. Thanks for everything! We should be in touch sometime over the weekend to continue working on this and Unit 10. :) Tbrownc1 (talk) 03:58, 5 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Tiara! I think the progress report is in line with what she asked for. I agree. I have an exam in another course due Sunday night, but I should be a little less busy on Monday. Awotawa1 (talk) 04:03, 5 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Continuing substantial contributions to article

[edit]

Hey Amy! I am going to busy tomorrow night so I would like to get most of my part for this unit completed tonight and tomorrow afternoon. I am going to start by making existing corrections to our article and hopefully I will get around to adding more material tomorrow afternoon. Tbrownc1 (talk) 02:12, 25 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Tiara. I hope all is going well for you. I am actually pretty busy tonight with some other things, and I'll be adding in most of my contributions in tomorrow night if that's ok. You said you were going to make the changes based on reviewer feedback, but other than that, which sections are you going to concentrate on adding more content and refining? Which sections do you want me to concentrate on? Awotawa1 (talk) 02:40, 25 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Well I am definitely going to concentrate on the genetic code section because most of it was removed. I also think some of your tertiary section was removed also, so maybe we could focus on those sections first. We can also edit citations and other things from the list that Keilana added. Tbrownc1 (talk) 03:01, 25 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
According to Keilana's review, we should just start over apparently. Until now, I was unaware of the plagiarism accusations. I don't copy and paste, so if there was such a problem, it was inadvertent. Awotawa1 (talk) 03:11, 25 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah I thought my so-called summary of my sources would've been ok but I guess not. Do you think we should email Dr. Ogg for guidance on what to do next? I would hate to start completely over if it isn't necessary. Tbrownc1 (talk) 03:15, 25 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
There are 22 points to address in Keilana's review. Jamie and James also made some valid points. You want to take the first 11 points of Keilana's review, and I'll take the last 11? I am not interested in starting over. I just want to pick up from here and move on. However, if you want to email Dr. Ogg for advice, that's fine with me. Awotawa1 (talk) 03:18, 25 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Do you want to go with my suggestion above? Or, do you have another suggestion? I'm open to contribute in any way to the group project. Thanks for being so easy to work with. Awotawa1 (talk) 04:11, 25 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Your suggestion works perfectly. Thanks to you too! I know you have a very busy schedule. At least the closing of the semester will be here very soon :) Tbrownc1 (talk) 12:24, 25 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, Tiara. I've gone through the last 11 revisions on Keilana's list. I've cleaned up a few of the points, but I'm going to go back through the entire article now to revise/refine and add anything I can while finishing up those other points. I haven't done the references at the end yet. Do you have time to clean up the reference list? Awotawa1 (talk) 02:53, 26 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Amy, sorry i just now seeing your comment about the reference list. We are finally on our last week of class and wrapping up this project. I think we should be in touch over the weekend to work on adding the final touches to our article, so that we don't feel rushed next week. What do you think? Tbrownc1 (talk) 00:08, 3 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, Tiara. I agree. My "weekend" is Sunday and Monday. Let's get in touch on Sun. or Mon. Monday might be a little better for me, but we'll work it out. Thanks! Awotawa1 (talk) 01:52, 3 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Final article contributions

[edit]

Hi, Tiara. Do you have a preference for what you want each of us to focus on for our final contributions to our article? If not, if you want to clean up the reference list and try to find a couple of good images, that would be most helpful. I can concentrate on expanding and refining some of the sections within the article. Let me know what you think. I'm flexible. If there are specific things you think we need to focus on or add to the article let me know that as well. Thanks! Awotawa1 (talk) 02:06, 7 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Amy. I agree, just cleaning up things here and there will be satisfactory. I will try to add more information to the article also but I will focus on revising what we already have. I can also work on the progress report early tomorrow evening and you can add to it if necessary. By the way, for some reason I did not receive an email notification of your posts on here. Sorry for the late response. Tbrownc1 (talk) 03:27, 8 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Tiara, have you had any luck with an image or two for the article? Also, can you take care of the reference list? I'm going to see what I can refine and add to the article. Also, thanks for offering to take care of the progress report tomorrow night! Awotawa1 (talk) 01:22, 9 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I am going to email you the image I found that may work. Yes, I can take care of the reference list also. Tbrownc1 (talk) 02:22, 9 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Tiara. Right now, I'm working on refining the text we have to clean it up a bit. Awotawa1 (talk) 02:23, 9 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
What's your email? I can't find your name in the email search. Tbrownc1 (talk) 02:31, 9 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
My email is awotawa1@jhu.edu Awotawa1 (talk) 02:46, 9 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Sent it. My only issues with the image are that it primarily focuses on the topic of point mutations and in our article we do not cover much about point mutations or other mutations. So I wonder is the image somewhat off topic? Also, not sure if the source is deemed credible. Other than that image I really did not find another image that would work but I will continue to look. Tbrownc1 (talk) 02:52, 9 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with what you said about the image. I don't want to include too much stuff off-topic. However, I think this image might be better than having no image at all. I'll try to look more either in a little while or tomorrow night. Awotawa1 (talk) 02:54, 9 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
What do you think about the introduction section. Is it too long? Can it be broken down into something different? I think we also need to add some material to the tertiary structure section (which I'll work on tomorrow night), and I think we need to work on developing the Examples section a bit more. I also think that section should be renamed to something other than Examples. Any ideas? Awotawa1 (talk) 03:15, 9 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I made a few refinements in the text that we already had to improve readability. I'll work on adding some additional content to the sections I mentioned above and insert the necessary inline citations for what we have tomorrow night. Awotawa1 (talk) 03:22, 9 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Great! I will be adding the image I emailed you (if I can't find anything better), editing the reference list, and working on the progress report this evening when I get home from work. Tbrownc1 (talk) 17:48, 9 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'm still trying to come up with an appropriate alternative heading for the Examples section. Any ideas? Awotawa1 (talk) 23:04, 9 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I decided to rename the Examples section as Research and clinical applications. Does that sound appropriate to you? Awotawa1 (talk) 23:24, 9 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good to me! Tbrownc1 (talk) 00:23, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'm trying to clean up the reference list but I am having trouble formatting like the others. Do you have any idea how to? I've been searching for seems like forever.Tbrownc1 (talk) 01:07, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry it took a while for me to respond--just getting home from work. I'll take a look at the references and see if I can figure it out. Awotawa1 (talk) 01:17, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, Tiara. I think I figured out what is wrong with these references. The last ones don't appear to be reftags in the body of the article. The inline citations for these have to be done first--I think. If that doesn't solve it, I'm at a loss. Awotawa1 (talk) 01:43, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm... ok I will try that. I added the image. I had to do it as a thumbnail because if it is regular size, it is huge. I may play with the sizing a little bit more. Tbrownc1 (talk) 01:54, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I think the image does need to be re-sized. Do you know how to reference the image within the article? How did you insert the image? I was thinking of trying to find another image to place elsewhere in the article. If at all possible, I need to try to be finished with the article in about another hour. I still have to do my quiz. Awotawa1 (talk) 02:00, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Adding an image is somewhat difficult. There's a lot of loops to go through. I will email the links I used to help me. Just did the progress report, I only added what I noticed you added so you might want to check it out and add more if necessary. Tbrownc1 (talk) 02:10, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Tiara. I saw that you added the progress report. Did my solution work for the references section? Awotawa1 (talk) 02:12, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Did I add everything you edited or added to the article to the progress report? As far as the reference section, there isn't a way to create inline citations for all of there references because we don't know what information was used. I am just going to try to make it as nice as possible or search for another solution. Tbrownc1 (talk) 02:35, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I've edited every section in the article primarily just re-organizing and making it sound better. I basically am just editing to make the readability good and re-organizing some of the sections. I think we probably just need to go through the article and pick out what needs to be referenced as inline citations. Awotawa1 (talk) 02:38, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Ok.Good luck on your quiz! Going to try to tackle this reference section again.Tbrownc1 (talk) 02:42, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Tiara. Do you want me to just finish up on my edits to the text before I do my quiz? Or do you need me to help you with the citations and references? Awotawa1 (talk) 02:45, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Help on references would be great if possible.Tbrownc1 (talk) 02:55, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Have you done your quiz already? I've edited the entire article a few times now. Let me know what you think about the re-organizations and the edits to the prose. I think the overall look of the article is better. I'm going to do my quiz now, and hopefully it won't take too long. Then I'll get back on and help you finish up the refs. Ok? Awotawa1 (talk) 03:04, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, Tiara. Sorry--I'm back now. Where are we? We're getting close to midnight eastern. Awotawa1 (talk) 03:51, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I added some citations to the Transfer RNA section and a couple of other areas. Are you still working on the article? I don't think we need those last two references at the bottom of the list unless you've found somewhere they're absolutely needed. Otherwise, we can just get rid of them as extra sources and wrap it up. What do you think? Awotawa1 (talk) 04:17, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Tiara, let me know if you're happy with the article in its current state. It's been a pleasure working with you. Thanks for all of your help and dedication. Awotawa1 (talk) 04:34, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
