Complete!
User:Ganeshbot has completed its run. It created 3,531 articles. It did not create 1,637 articles since another article with the same name existed.
I need your help with the following activities.
- Check Census Towns. Some articles can be deleted after verification. Examples: 1 SGM, 3 STR.
Check CT Stubs. Articles can be deleted after verification.Completed- Merge articles that were not created with the actual ones. Listing can be found here. After merging the information with the actual article, please strike out the line on the bot page by adding <s> and </s> tags. Also, uncat the sandbox article by adding {{tl| before the template name and a colon, [[:Category before the category.. See Devakottai for an example.
- Changing some titles which use abbreviations like Rly, cantt., etc.
Please comment and add other to do items as needed. - Ganeshk (talk) 18:01, 3 July 2006 (UTC)
- Congrats Ganesh! I have deleted Navi Mumbai (Panvel as it was incorrectly listed. The location is Panvel. What all can you program your bot to do? =Nichalp «Talk»= 18:13, 3 July 2006 (UTC)
- What all can you program your bot to do? Depends on the requirement. In this case, the bot read a comma seperated text file, read it line by line, searched fallinggrain.com for the city name, picked the latitude and logitude from the webpage, checked if the article exists, if exists creating in sandbox, if it does not exist, create in the main namespace. - Ganeshk (talk) 18:30, 3 July 2006 (UTC)
- Really useful bot. I've merged the info from here with the existing articles at Ettayapuram and Aruppukkottai and cleaned up the latter. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 19:59, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

We also need to consider changing some titles which use abbreviations like Rly, cantt., etc., Add this as a task. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 05:13, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
- Can some editor/bot do what I've done here to the list of not created pages? I could write a Perl few-liner, but I'm in the middle of something else. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 05:23, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
- Done. - Ganeshk (talk) 05:29, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
Additional request
Can you program your bot to do this:
- Collect list of cities and towns from all state categories: [[:Category: Cities and towns in STATE]]
- Collect the towns and cities that use Template:Infobox Indian Jurisdiction
- Compare both
- If town does not use infobox, add infobox to town.
Can this be done? =Nichalp «Talk»= 07:28, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
I've found two sites which have a pretty comprehensive STD and PIN codes:
Just wondering if your bot could also scrub these sites and add non-existant towns; and include STD+PIN codes to the locations. =Nichalp «Talk»= 08:06, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
- This can be done. I was thinking on similar lines. The census data did not have all the towns. I could use the lists that you provided to create the missing ones. - Ganeshk (talk) 16:33, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
- Some more locations for your bot to chew: List of railway stations in India. =Nichalp «Talk»= 09:42, 6 July 2006 (UTC)
Other wikis
Ganeshk, suppose I convert the csv file to Hindi (daunting task that will take atleast a month after I start), and also make a prototype article for one town, shouldn't it be quite easy for you to replace some strings in your program with their Hindi versions, and run the bot on the Hindi wikipedia ? (Incidently, that will skyrocket the number of articles there from around 1300 to over 5000.) Once the file is in Devanagari, it will be easy to convert it to some other Indian languages using something like this. Do you think this is a feasible idea? deeptrivia (talk) 14:31, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
- You'd have to make sure that all templates, such as the infobox ones are in place first. =Nichalp «Talk»= 14:38, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
- I have never worked with multilingual files and programming with them. I will do some testing and see if it is feasible. - Ganeshk (talk) 16:34, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
- Sure. I guess it should be okay as long as commas are used to separate fields. Shouldn't matter if what's between the commas is in unicode. Yeah, Nichalp, all the templates, stub categories, etc. will have to be made first. It also makes sense to wait till the bot is perfected on the English wikipedia with details like STD and PIN. deeptrivia (talk) 17:18, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
- PS: Could you point me to the location of the csv file, so that I can make a small sample file you can test with? deeptrivia (talk) 17:23, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
- Sent it to your e-mail. - Ganeshk (talk) 19:46, 4 July 2006 (UTC)

"India" and "Indian"
Hi - I've had some detailed talks with user:Spasage on the sensitive issue of national identity between India, Bangladesh and Pakistan. We've come up with some ideas on how to resolve the problem, through a disambiguation page for both "India" and "Indian." Obviously its a big move, so please weigh in here[1]. controversy at Babri Mosque
Hello everybody. I think that people may want to keep a close eye on this article, as there seems to be a big POV dispute here. Seems like a few users, including two brand new accounts and one of our favourite wikipedians have been editwarring with User:Subhash bose, who happens to have been given a 1-week block by me because he called other users terrorists, bombers and Hezbollah on the talk page. Now that he is out of the picture, it looks as though one side will have a free run so somebody knowledged in this should please keep a close eye out for it. Many thanks, Blnguyen | rant-line 03:36, 7 July 2006 (UTC).

A bit of help required at Khalistan
Two editors with severely conflicting POVs have taken to editing at this page. All I've tried to do is make the headings conform with WP:MoS, especially since they are full of POV. But I have been quickly reverted. Some attention is required on this page. Nobleeagle (Talk) 01:01, 8 July 2006 (UTC)
- Yup, someone else can take care of this page now. I've had enough :) Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 01:04, 8 July 2006 (UTC)
- Yeah, I have also tasted the ire of one of the two editors. But if many people are willing to work on the article to make it more encyclopedic, I will devote my time too. Left to two or three editors, such an article just becomes a place for edit warring. -- Lost 14:02, 8 July 2006 (UTC)
Sarai archives
Here's a set of probable PD images. (Sarai)
The website says:"The Sarai archive will be free and open to the public."(Source)
Hopefully that means PD...and a useful treasure. — Ambuj Saxena (talk) 17:54, 8 July 2006 (UTC)
- Confirmed [2] but please check if it is PD or GNU. =Nichalp «Talk»= 18:14, 8 July 2006 (UTC)
- The source I mentioned before also says:"The archive's user database is customised from Greenstone (www.nzdl.org) a software under General Public License.", but I am not sure if it means the same for the content also. — Ambuj Saxena (talk) 18:22, 8 July 2006 (UTC)
- Best is to ask them for permission, since all of their content is not their own. I knew most of the folks there personally (little time to contact, etc., now). And they are well aware of the licensing issues, etc., and will be liberal with its use, if the content is their own.

Vandalism on CPI(M) article
Hi,
please keep an eye on the Communist Party of India (Marxist) articles, as User: 203.199.60.3, the notorious self-proclaimed 'Indian National Congress - IT Cell', is readding long passages of POV rants. --Soman 07:11, 9 July 2006 (UTC)
DYKs
I have noticed it long that people post DYKs for Main Page, but none for Portal:India. In fact for the past one and half month, I had to add nearly every India related DYK to the Portal Page myself. DYKs worth appearing on Main Page are automatically worth Portal:India, and even many DYKs that wouldn't make up to the Main Page can be included in the Portal Page. I request the editors to also consider the Portal while submitting DYKs. We should justify why Portal:India is featured. — Ambuj Saxena (talk) 11:29, 9 July 2006 (UTC)
- Do we nominate DYKs for the portal like we do for the main page or just add them? -- Lost 16:36, 9 July 2006 (UTC)
- We would need nomination process when the nominations outnumber the requirement. Though maintaining quality is essential, just make sure whatever is added is not so bad (trivial) that it warrents reversion. — Ambuj Saxena (talk) 17:17, 9 July 2006 (UTC)
- Why not use facts from WP:PINQ? that was one of the objectives with which it was started. It is not necessary that only new articles be considered, because the idea here is to ensure that interesting facts get picked up and the articles related to those facts get a face-lift by virtue of being on the portal. --Gurubrahma 17:23, 9 July 2006 (UTC)
- I am not sure about the comment by Gurubrahma. AFAIK, a Featured Portal should follow the guidelines of DYK similar to those of Wikipedia DYK. The 5 day limit would exist in this case too. — Ambuj Saxena (talk) 17:29, 9 July 2006 (UTC)
- Why would I nominate something for a less visited India portal when 90% of non-trivial DYK facts make it to the Main Page? India portal is not meant to duplicate main page, imho. we don't have the stringent criteria of FAs for the selected articles, so why shd the set of guidelines be same for main page and portal DYKs? We have a treasure trove of trivia in the India quiz, which can easily be posted as DYK facts. Some of the articles abt which questions are asked in the quiz are in bad shape and could do with exposure at the DYK of the portal. Featured portal guidelines do not have this 5-day funda and all that. --Gurubrahma 17:35, 9 July 2006 (UTC)
- I also could not find any such guidelines. Let's get started with PINQ facts in DYK. — Ambuj Saxena (talk) 17:39, 9 July 2006 (UTC)

I dont know whether the 5 day limit on the main page is the max or min limit, but we should allow DYKs to stay for atleast some time and should not have more than a certain number at any given time. This would allow some exposure to the listed DYKs/articles. Of course I know right now the reverse is true (we have a paucity) but it should change soon. What do you guys think? -- Lost 17:46, 9 July 2006 (UTC)
- The 5 days is the max limit. I suggest we have around 5-6, and the time limit should be 1 day only, as older items can be viewed in the archives. --May the Force be with you! Shreshth91($ |-| ŗ 3 $ |-| ţ |-|) 19:59, 9 July 2006 (UTC)
User:Anwar Saadat
Anwar saadat (talk • contribs • page moves • block user • block log) has again been edit warring, and now he combines blanking of text and references with fact templates and says, because of the fact templates in the same edit as the vandalism, the vandalism cannot be reverted. In the Babri Mosque article, he has first blanked text and references. Now he deletes references and text and in the same edit he adds the citation needed template for the citation he just deleted. [3] Then he claims that his vandalism cannot be reverted because in the same edit he also added these tags. See this for some details.
Anwar, (who might also be [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] [9]), has already a history of edit warring and personal attacks and has been blocked three times already. [10] [11] [12] [13] [14] The section headers of warnings on his talkpage are also deleted [15], if they are not completely removed. --Msiev 09:33, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

Shiv Sena
Edit war is underway at Shiv Sena. Hardline POV material is added from both anti- and pro-Sena people, leaving the article in a pure mess. It ought to be possible, through a collective effort, to rewrite the article and work out a consensus that: 1) gives prominence to the role played by SS in Indian politics (for example its role in state and central governance), 2) deals with controversial issues in balanced way, most of all without making reference to every single incident involving shivsainiks, 3) neither glorifies nor demonises. --Soman 16:17, 10 July 2006 (UTC)
- As an add. user Anwar Saadat has utterly vandalized the article with racist and pejorative remarks against maharashtrian people. This user has had a history of Fundamentalist propaganda and anti-Hindu hatred (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WT:INWNB#User%3AAnwar_Saadat). Please look into this matter. Article rating
I noticed several projects doing a rating of the articles. See Talk:Delhi Mass Rapid Transit System for example. I feel we should have something similar for India related articles. We could start with the City and District projects. This would really help the Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team. - I found Wikipedia:Notice board for India-related topics/Version 1.0 assesment. But is there a template that can be added to talk pages on India related articles? - Ganeshk (talk) 18:15, 10 July 2006 (UTC)
- I have not seen any such template. Maybe we can create one on the lines of the railway template. From what I know, its quite a complex template. -- Lost 02:42, 11 July 2006 (UTC)
- I have started tagging the template. India being the obvious first, I added {{WP India | class=FA | importance=Top | portal=yes}} to it's talk page. See Wikipedia:WikiProject India/Assessment for usage. - Ganeshk (talk) 06:42, 11 July 2006 (UTC)

Introducing Wikipedia:WikiProject India
I have created a new project Wikipedia:WikiProject India (with grateful thanks to Australia) that would be the root project for all India related projects and activities. Noticeboard can be used as place for general discussions.
Under the project are some cool departments,
- Assessment department
- Cartography department
- Collaboration department
- Peer review department
- Photography department
The main reason I started is to add rating to India related articles. Check out Wikipedia:WikiProject India/Assessment for all details. Hopefully we should merge all old style assessment into this new format which is cleaner and easier. 1-800-Please join in. :) - Ganeshk (talk) 06:15, 11 July 2006 (UTC)

Small thing
Is it just me or is this version of the Khalistan page POV. It is very Anti-Hindu, I must say that the other version in the revert war is POV as well, but its POV because it leaves out some of the story, instead of glorifying the pro-Khalistan side. For admins:NTR move
Hello all: I've put in a request at WP:RM for the article on NTR at Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao to be moved to N.T. Rama Rao. Can't do it myself, as the latter page has a non-empty history. The reason it has a nonempty history is that the original NTR page was created at NTR, and then large numbers of startled admins flocked along - in 2003, before substantial Indian presence here - and moved it to the full name as title. This is, of course, not conventional for any South Indian names here - consider the articles on MGR, M. Karunanidhi, EMS Nambodiripad or N. Chandrababu Naidu. Since the WP:RM page seems to have a truly amazing backlog, It would be nice if someone speedied the move.
Incidentally, on a tangential point, why is there such a backlog on that page? It seems like something admins might enjoy doing. Hornplease 09:17, 17 July 2006 (UTC)
Block on many websites and blogs in India
Does anyone know if an article relating to this exists? - Aksi_great (talk) 17:20, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
- I doubt if it does. At the very moment, no confirmation has been received from the government side regarding the blocks. AFAIK, all information we have is from service providers like Airtel. It would be too much speculative to create the article now. If you have any concrete source information from an official government source, go ahead as fast as possible. It is yet to be reported in any newspaper. — Ambuj Saxena (talk) 18:16, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
- But it has been reported on many news sites online. [16] -- thunderboltza.k.a.Deepu Joseph |TALK18:34, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, I know that. I mentioned "news-paper":). I ask for other editors' opinion whether it would be okay to write the article without having the government confirmation. Even if true, the article may not have much notability if the number of sites to be blocked is very few (and quite selective). However, if the government plans to block 1000+ sites, it will be article-worthy. The trouble is, it may turn out that the former was asked and the latter was implemented. However, another issue to be kept in mind is that if it were govt's order, BSNL and VSNL would have been the first to block, though they are still allowing. — Ambuj Saxena (talk) 18:48, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
- A related news item appeared in today's The Hindu. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 09:51, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
- From what I can gather, it is indeed a lapse on part of the service providers to not block sites properly. This may become a news item, but to merit an article for itself, would require government's intention to block numerous websites. If its just a technical fault on part of the ISPs (which will get corrected in a few days), it doesn't merit an article. — Ambuj Saxena (talk) 12:32, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
- I agree. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 12:44, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
