Venues
[edit]What type of venue should we consider? Depending on the amount of people, I was considering a coffee shop or art museum. Does anyone else have an opinion? hmwithτ 01:34, 8 February 2009 (UTC)
Wikipedia:Wikipedia Loves Art could possibly provide a potential venue / date at the Taft Museum of Art in Cincinnati. Right now we are working out whether there will be a particular date endorsed by the Taft for this. If so it would be sometime this month. If something gets planned for that event, I will try to remember to post about it here. I would still be interested in a meetup beyond the scope of that event though, too. Cincinnati / Ohio / Wikipedia Loves Art Meetup
[edit]I'm going to plan on being at the Taft Museum for the Wikipedia Loves Art event / contest on this coming Sunday the 22nd from 11-12. I'm hoping I'll get a chance to meet up with other Wikipedians, photographers, and art lovers. Although this is a way to hopefully encourage participation in that project, I hope other Wikipedians will feel free to come and chat. It is not necessary to pay admission to come into the cafe portion of the Taft. Please stop by and see me! DaveMenninger (talk) 00:57, 18 February 2009 (UTC)
- The 22nd of February? As in just the other day? Damn. hmwithτ 22:15, 26 February 2009 (UTC)
Location? (city)
[edit]The page says that a date will be set after a consensus for location has been met... considering that half of the people who signed under "possible attendees" made no mention of location preferences, should we try to make a consensus here? - Adolphus79 (talk) 02:06, 10 March 2009 (UTC)
- Absolutely. How should we go about it? hmwithτ 17:34, 10 March 2009 (UTC)
- I'm not sure, but I would think that first we need to figure out a region (not just a city)... Whether we want to meetup to take place in northern, central, or southern Ohio (we can decide on a city after we decide on a region... My personal choice would be for central (columbus or dayton areas)... are there any pros or cons to the different regions, or it this just going to be a majority vote type thing? - Adolphus79 (talk) 17:43, 10 March 2009 (UTC)
- I think it's cities, because a big city seems ideal. There are 5 major cities in Ohio, 3 of which seem like the best options (Cleveland, Cinci, Columbus). I suppose a majority vote would be ideal, as in seeing where the most people could come. hmwithτ 17:23, 11 March 2009 (UTC)
- Sounds fine to me... we'll just start the voting here then... — Preceding unsigned comment added by Adolphus79 (talk • contribs)

According to the !votes below, Columbus seems to be quickly becoming the best option. Should we start planning? hmwithτ 21:32, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
- Sounds good to me... shall we go ahead and officially call it for Columbus? If nothing else, this first meetup can be in Columbus, and we can then use Cleveland or Cinci-town for the next one? I guess next we should choose a date... I'd say something far enough in the future that (after we've chosen the date) we can make plans for a location within Columbus, OK it with whomever is in charge of said location, spam everyone on this list (and probably WikiProject Ohio while we're at it), etc... My thoughts are like 3-4 months from now (July or August), and somewhere pretty public (someone had earlier suggested the oval at OSU), but in the heat of summer we may want to consider something inside... are we going to recieve any support for the Foundation with this, or is it completely up to us to schedule/plan/setup everything? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Adolphus79 (talk • contribs)
- I like the idea of switching it up different years. And as for meetups, they're not official, so it's up to everyone to plan any meetups they'd like to take place. hmwithτ 02:35, 19 March 2009 (UTC)

Spam banner?
[edit]Anyone up for making a banner template or image to put on our user pages and/or anywhere else to spam for this meetup? (after we have a location and probably after we have an idea for the date) - Adolphus79 (talk) 20:57, 11 March 2009 (UTC)
- I have a generic spammish template on my userpage, although I'm sure we could create something a lot prettier and more informative than that. :) Once we get a location & date, I'll be sure to be advertising it regardless, and, if others are interested, a consistent banner would be wonderful. I'll probably wait to see what city it is in first, then I can think about what sort of little image would be best to use. hmwithτ 21:07, 11 March 2009 (UTC)
- I present {{Wikipedia:Meetup/Ohio 1/Banner}}:
Are you from the Ohio area? A Wikipedian meetup is taking place on July 18, 2009 in Columbus. If you are interested in coming or would like more information, see the first Ohio meetup page. |
- Use it wherever! hmwithτ 18:50, 14 April 2009 (UTC)
Columbus: specific location/date/time
[edit]Location
[edit]So we know it's in Columbus. Let's start throwing out some ideas for specific locations. Columbus Museum of Art and The Oval have been mentioned. I still like the idea of a coffee shop/cafe, and there is a nice little place in Wexner Center for the Arts. As you can see, much of my ideas are limited to around the OSU campus area, so I'd certainly like to hear suggestions from anyone who knows Columbus better as a city. hmwithτ 13:44, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
- Pretty much anywhere is fine with me... Oval would be nice, but an outdoor venue has a couple planning drawbacks (we don't know what weather, temps, wind, general public, etc. have planned for that day)... another outdoor venue could be the Zoo... A coffee shop would be cool also, but the only drawback to that would be space limitations... we don't know how many people are going to show up, so I'd rather have too much space, than not enough... one of the museums is a great idea, or we could even do COSI (I loved COSI as a kid)... - Adolphus79 (talk) 14:05, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
- I think an outdoor-ish venue should be the main plan, but have an indoor secondary location in case the weather turns. It would probably be best to meetup at a park, and then go elsewhere (restaurant, zoo, museum, whatever) once we have an idea of our actual numbers. EVula // talk // ☯ // 14:49, 1 April 2009 (UTC)
- Perhaps the best course of action would be to pick a date first, then spam/advertise all appropriate places (including Category:Wikipedians in Ohio?), get an idea of the numbers saying they'll be there, then choose the location based on how large or small the crowd is. --Rkitko (talk) 21:07, 6 April 2009 (UTC)
- Good call. hmwithτ 17:00, 8 April 2009 (UTC)

- I'm a student at OSU and have been the director of social relations for many organizations on campus. I know of and have access to many meeting locations on campus and can book locations for free if we need. The locations can be meeting areas or restaurants that may or may not require some sort of booking. Off the top of my head, BW3s (wings joint) is fun and free to book (besides the cost of food/drinks). Donatos' basement is large and they only require that you spend ~$50 on food but I know the GM and can get that stipulation removed. The oval won't be that busy as most students will be home but obvisouly, that location hinges on weather. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'm very connected in the University area and can easily work out locations. I'm happy to work out a location. OlYellerTalktome 23:51, 23 April 2009 (UTC)
- Yeah, somewhere on campus is probably a good idea, easily found by those coming from outside Columbus, and large enough to have a fairly wide range of venues... considering we've already got 22 possibles, we might want to look into a somewhat larger space than your average coffee shop... the next consideration is probably making sure the venue is fairly easily located (again, for those coming from out of town)... - Adolphus79 (talk) 10:36, 24 April 2009 (UTC)
- Most any location in Columbus is fine with me as long as my phone's Google Maps can navigate me there. However if we could finalize the location for the meetup by early June that would be great. My wife and I will be going out of country in mid to late June for our anniversary trip, and will not be returning until the week before the meetup. Assuming that the week between my return home and the meetup will be chaotic catch-up, if the location of Meetup Ohio can be finalized in June, that will enable me to make all of my meetup arrangements before my anniversary trip, which will make my life significantly less complicated. Thanks, — Kralizec! (talk) 12:36, 24 April 2009 (UTC)
<-- Outdent. I think that a non-university venue would be the easiest as parking may be an issue on campus (when I say "campus" I mean the land actually owned by the University and not the "campus area"). I think that the South Campus Gateway will be the best location. The surrounding restaurants vary in size and there's a parking garage connected that's very cheap. If 22 people or more come, the best place to meet would probably be Eddie George Grill. Otherwise, here's a list of surrounding resturaunts. OlYellerTalktome 16:07, 24 April 2009 (UTC)
Date
[edit]Do we want to do it this spring? Or should we wait until summer? What works best for everyone? hmwithτ 13:44, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
- I don't think spring would give us enough time to properly plan and advertise... I think I stated above that my thoughts were July or August... - Adolphus79 (talk) 14:05, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
- July or early August is my preference; I'm going to be busy in the second half of August and into September. I would think that May would be good, but like Adolphus said, that might be too soon (though I don't think people make particularly extensive vacation plans for meetups; usually it's just local people, and you don't often need months and months of advanced notice for them) EVula // talk // ☯ // 14:52, 1 April 2009 (UTC)
- Yeah, I'd definitely want to do it before football season or clsses start again next fall, I'll be way too busy. Anyone else feeling July? hmwithτ 17:22, 6 April 2009 (UTC)
- July sounds fine... obviously the first weekend is out (gotta blow stuff up, ya'know?), but maybe the weekend of the 11-12, or 18-19? - Adolphus79 (talk) 17:50, 6 April 2009 (UTC)
- The weekend of the 18-19 works best for me, since I've got an event that I pretty much have to be at on the 11th. :\ EVula // talk // ☯ // 19:01, 6 April 2009 (UTC)

Time
[edit]I'll be vacationing in Ohio this summer, and it just so happens I might be available on that day. However, if I am able to make it, would it be possible to have it as a late-morning lunch at a local cafe, as I might need to catch an afternoon flight from the Columbus airport? If it's inconvenient for everyone, I'm totally cool. Just a suggestion. ;) Meetare Shappy Cunkelfratz! 18:21, 19 April 2009 (UTC)

Spamming

spamadvertise the meetup to all Ohio users in that user category using the nifty new banner. --Rkitko (talk) 19:38, 14 April 2009 (UTC)

Likely / Possible attendees?
[edit]What is the difference between likely and possible? Is one more apt to happen than the other? Maybe (if that's the case) change "Likely" to "Very probable" or something like that? - Likely-80-100% I'll be there--It's Me :) O Yea its me.. Washington95 (talk) 22:03, 4 May 2009 (UTC)
- I'm not sure it matters too much. We're not spending money on a venue so I think people either show or they don't. It doesn't matter much either way if they do or not. OlYellerTalktome 23:44, 4 May 2009 (UTC)
Deadline for decisions...
[edit]I'm sorry I have not been around much lately, real life has sort of taken away my ability to sit in front of the puter for extended periods of time and edit the Wiki... I was just wondering if a venue and time have been decided upon, considering that we're less than two weeks away from the date now... has anyone else discussed this or moved forward with the planning? We're kinda running out of time to remain undecided on venue, etc... - Adolphus79 (talk) 15:24, 9 July 2009 (UTC)
There it goes...
[edit]The meet date made a nice whooshing sound as it went by. I totally spaced on the date (surprise surprise). Apparently, a venue was never decided? Did everyone else space too? Vid the Kid (t/c) Yeah, that guy. 20:25, 23 July 2009 (UTC)
- I didn't space, but per my above post, I have been very busy IRL, and unable to spend much time online... I was a little disappointed that no one else could be bothered to finish planning this... I was fully planning on attending (even had the day free of any other obligations)... Oh well, maybe next year... :/ - Adolphus79 (talk) 21:15, 24 July 2009 (UTC)
