Times article
[edit]I've been told that today's issue of The Times has an article about the 9 January Wikipedia meetup with Jimbo. The ferret gets a mention. :) —Psychonaut 13:47, 2 March 2007 (UTC)
- Yes - it does - It is in Times 2 -well done that ferret! Brookie :) - a will o' the wisp ! (Whisper...) 14:12, 2 March 2007 (UTC)
Any future meetups?
[edit]I'm going to be in London from July 13 - 23... any chance of there being any Wikipedian meetup then and there? *Dan T.* 15:28, 30 March 2007 (UTC)
- Only if you promise to bring me something from Gainesville. —Psychonaut 17:08, 30 March 2007 (UTC)
- But I'm not from Gainesville... Florida's a pretty big state, and I'm in a different part of it. *Dan T.* 18:11, 30 March 2007 (UTC)
- Well what can you bring? I'll bring jellied eels Theresa Knott | Taste the Korn 08:39, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
- Hmmm... I think the place I live, Boca Raton, Florida, is best known for scams and spamming, but I don't think anybody would want me to export that... *Dan T.* 12:43, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
- After reading your user page and browsing through your web page, I humbly withdraw my demand for a gift. Truly, you are a bastion of common sense in the application of Internet standards and design, and I think it would be an honour to meet with you. Please hasten to London so that I may buy you a drink in the company of your fellow Wikipedians. —Psychonaut 13:47, 1 April 2007 (UTC)

New Year Meetup
[edit]Hey guys, as I am back in London now and need to keep occupied I decided to organize an informal meetup this month. My proposed time and date would be 7pm , Saturday 12 January, 2008. Location: ?, somewhere relatively central and easy to get to and most importantly: has WiFi and is affordable. Anybody up for it? Will start posting this on possible candidates talk pages starting Monday. Poeloq (talk) 19:54, 5 January 2008 (UTC)
- MMM yeah I could probably make that. Theresa Knott | The otter sank 00:48, 6 January 2008 (UTC)
- Sundays or weekday evenings generally better for me. JFW | T@lk 07:55, 6 January 2008 (UTC)
- The date, the time are fine Gordo (talk) 10:21, 6 January 2008 (UTC)
- Unfortunately Londoners tend to propose times that only suit them, not anyone having to travel. Start at 7 and I'd probably leave round about the time the party was getting into its swing. Charles Matthews (talk) 10:45, 6 January 2008 (UTC)
- Could we bring it forward to around 2pm? This gives people who want to travel enough time to arrive, and enough time to stay before they have to leave again. Theresa Knott | The otter sank 11:14, 6 January 2008 (UTC)
- I would, personally, be against bringing it forward. It is a London meetup, not the UK one. However, if there are several people that want to travel then we could think about this and then also put some effort into maybe planning something along the lines of a collaboration or talks or something. Poeloq (talk) 15:43, 6 January 2008 (UTC)
- Well, you invited me. I think I'll uninvite myself if it's a private party for people who can get home on the Tube. Charles Matthews (talk) 09:23, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
- I would be against moving forward to 2 for reasons given at the discussion created by Poeloq.--Peter cohen (talk) 11:27, 7 January 2008 (UTC)
There's another meetup being planned here, by the way. Majorly (talk) 12:39, 6 January 2008 (UTC)
- I made a page over at Wikipedia:Meetup/London7 where we can keep this discussion going in true Wikipedia style - now that I get the feeling that at least there is enough interest! Poeloq (talk) 16:11, 6 January 2008 (UTC)
Suggested Places for Future London Meetups
[edit]Pembury Tavern in Hackney (map)
- It's a great pub. Free wifi. Excellent beers, and User:Psychonaut, User:Morwen and sometimes David Gerrard hang around there many Sundays anyway (playing board games). This was the location of Wikipedia:Meetup/London 7, we then tried to go to the same place for number 8 (old organisation details) That event never really came together properly. One of the reasons being that the pub wasn't easy enough for everyone to get to (basically not central enough)
Tollgate Tavern at Beckton E6, ASDA (beerintheevening.com)
- Strikes me as further out than the Pembury
pub in Hackney people whose location people complained about. Certainly, coming from South West London, that location would be very unappealing.--Peter cohen (talk) 18:37, 2 May 2008 (UTC)- I agree. Not for my own benefit, but because somewhere very central will attract more people -- Harry Wood (talk) 13:30, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

West Ham and Plaistow NDC The Hub at Canning Town
- I'm afraid that this may have the same problem of being away from the centre of town. There was a sentiment over at Wikipedia_talk:Meetup/London_8/Archive_1 that things needed to be central. I was perfectly happy with the Pembury
original planned pub, but it's location in Hackney, which is actually more central than Plaistow was complained about. And a location that needs a bus journey after the tube would put as many people off as the Hackney site. I think we may have to settle for "within the circle line".--Peter cohen (talk) 15:14, 7 May 2008 (UTC)- I agree. Not for my own benefit, but because somewhere very central will attract more people -- Harry Wood (talk) 13:30, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

Somewhere near Beckton would be great. 81.86.68.253 (talk) 17:57, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
under age for meetings in the pub
[edit]I've had a message from someone suggesting that there are Wikipedians who may be under age for meetings in the pub. There are therefore two aspects of accessibility.
- What geographical location will be accessible to as many London Wikipedians as possible?
- What type of venue will be accessible to as many LWs as possible?
--Peter cohen (talk) 16:13, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
- Cafeterias, cafes, restaurants, meeting rooms would all be suitable places.--81.86.68.253 (talk) 19:42, 7 May 2008 (UTC) Registered as Troop350 Troop350 Talk
- Yeah or ....pubs. You know we don't force people to drink alcohol at these events. It's pretty quiet in the Penderel's Oak on a Sunday lunchtime. Very "family friendly". -- Harry Wood (talk) 12:47, 12 May 2008 (UTC)
- As an (extremely late) follow-up, people "under age for meetings in a pub" would have to be 12 or younger, at which age I would hope their guardian would be present too, which obviates the need for a move of venue.

Advertising with the pub
[edit]I enjoyed my first time at the London meeting this month. I got there on the hour and, whilst I was on the lookout for young, nerdy-looking chaps (narrow-minded? perhaps), I ended up asking the bartender, who had no knowledge of the event. I think telling the staff on the bar about the meeting, as well as a bigger sign on the tables, would help prevent newcomers receiving strange looks having asked random pub-goers whether they knew anything about Wikipedia! October Meetup
[edit]I'd love to come but unfortunately I can't make the September date... Are there any plans for an October one yet - is it likely that it'll be held on second Sunday (11th Oct)? User:Madriguera 10:51 19 Aug 2009 (UTC)
- If 11th Oct is the second Sunday, then yup, that's when it'll be. WilliamH (talk) 11:00, 19 August 2009 (UTC)
Sue Gardner is coming
[edit]Sue Gardner (Executive Director, WMF) is coming to the next meetup (April 11th). I expect lots of people will want to come and talk to her about the WMF. What is the best way of letting Londoners (and people further afield, I guess) know? --Tango (talk) 19:26, 26 March 2010 (UTC)
June 14?
[edit]If I understand this schedule correctly, there will be a meetup on June 14. I'll probably be in London that day Mikael Häggström (talk) 13:17, 20 March 2015 (UTC)
- Oh, I forgot to see I should look at Meta:Meetup/London. Mikael Häggström (talk) 16:41, 27 March 2015 (UTC)
Thanks
[edit]It was nice to meet some of you guys at the pub yesterday afternoon. Unfortunately I'm hardly ever in London on a Sunday (and not often on other days either!), so it was good to have the opportunity. @WereSpielChequers, Johnbod, and Edwardx: and the others whose names I can't now remember. Really sorry to have missed RHaworth. Deb (talk) 12:58, 14 May 2018 (UTC)
London book event for "The Editors"
[edit]Hello - I am a writer who has covered Wikipedia for Slate, The Washington Post, and other publications.
My novel The Editors is inspired by Wikipedia and was published earlier this month. As part of the book tour, I will be in London on Thursday 29 of August at 6:30 PM at Newspeak House.
Details about the event here: https://lu.ma/ubri3176
Sorry for the short notice, but if any London-based Wikipedians are available and interested in attending the event, it would be great to see you there! No RSVP required; just show up at Newspeak house. Stephenbharrison (talk) 22:18, 27 August 2024 (UTC)
