European meetings 2004
There are some European meetings that will happen in June/July 2004 together with Jimbo in Berlin, Genoa, Munich, Paris... if you want to set up one for the UK please do so and let us know :-) Fantasy 12:05, 22 Feb 2004 (UTC)

- Should somebody draw attention to this on the Village pump? I think more regular users will spot it there than on the front page (I spotted the summary in my watchlist rather than the link itself). Also, Pete seems to have conveniently forgotten that the USA, Australia and (parts of) Canada are also English-speaking - but London is certainly a centre of mass, and the one that would be relevant to me. - IMSoP 14:04, 22 Feb 2004 (UTC)
- OK, I have put it to the village pump. And: Jimbo is simply following invitations, it is not he who imposes this. If you don't organise, then there will be no meeting. And: Pete has not forgotten. London IS the english center in EUROPE (see above)

- Sorry, I was thinking in terms of a Jimbo european tour but wasn't explicit about it, and simply meant that London would be the best place for a meetup involving English-speaking (i.e. British and Irish) European Wikipedians with Jimbo. Anyhow Jimbo has just written on the mailing list that he doesn't plan to be in the UK this summer, but does plan to be there in Summer 2005. Pete/Pcb21

- PS: Jimbo wrote "so I do need to not over-schedule.", just if someone wants to organise another meeting, don't take it for granted that Jimbo will come. But a meeting is alway nice, why not oranising one nevertheless! :-)
- IMSoP checks the Pump carefully in some confusion, as this is still not mentioned, and finally discovers it in the edit history. So, are we going to try and organise a meeting (Jimbo or no) or not? If we are, there's no point the 3 of us talking to ourselves on here, we need to tell people that something's going on. So either it should stay on the pump, with an amendment that Jimbo will most likely not be involved, or, erm, see you all next year? - IMSoP 21:02, 23 Feb 2004 (UTC)
- Just some examples:
- In Munich we are meeting every one or two months.
- In Berlin also some Wikipedians started to meet (i think once a month)
- I was wondering, why there is nothing like this happening in english speaking countries.
- BUT: I am not living in a english speaking country, so I can/will not be the one to organise it.
- Someone living in London can organise a "London-meeting" whenever he wants (next week, next month, in the Summer... whenever)
- So, if you are living in an interresting place: SET A DATE AND START ADVERTISING (village pump, mailinglist, main page, ...), you will get to know a lot of interresting people!

If anyone is interested in doing one in Seattle, I'd be glad to be involved. I know we have at least a few very active Wikipedians here: myself, Lukobe, DanKeshet, probably ohters where geography never came up... This July, O'Reilly is sponsoring their Open Source Conference here in Portland, Oregon, which is where I live. On the project page, Omegatron asked, "Also, what is the relationship between this meetup and this meetup?" It seems that some people came together through the Meetup.com website and set up a meeting for the evening of Monday, December 13. As far as I can tell, the relationship is that there was none, i.e., the two sets of planners were each ignorant of the other's work. (It was Omegatron's post here that told me about the Meetup.com group; I've posted a message there about the December 12 meetup.) JamesMLane 14:36, 11 Dec 2004 (UTC)
- Mostly correct. The one via meetup.com is a regularly scheduled event for locals. There are similar meetups happening all across the world at the same time on the same day.... that's how meetup.com works. The meeting being organized here is due to Jimbo, Angela and Anthere happening to be in town. I knew of both. - UtherSRG 14:54, 11 Dec 2004 (UTC)
- Is there any way these two could be synced up? The meets scheduled here could be synced up with the meetup.com one, since it's a scheduled event the same day every month, but the meetup.com thing is dumb because it's never on weekends. But it's not like the people on there aren't regular old wikipedians and can't talk about it here. Meetup Fees
Update 6/15/2005: On April 12, 2005, Meetup.com converted to a pay website by charging groups a monthly fee ($19/month for new groups, $9/month for existing ones). Organizers of groups were given a grace period to begin paying fees. On May 16, 2005, organizers who had not paid their group's fees were automatically removed as organizers. It is estimated that on or around June 16, 2005, groups without organizers will also be removed.
As of today, there were 40 Wikipedia Meetup groups. Of them, only two still have organizers: Calgary and Boston, so it's quite possible that the others will be removed in the near future.
Given this lack of interest in using Meetup, this article should be revised to suggest alternate ways to coordinate in-person meetings.

Pruning
I've cut down this page drastically, because (quite frankly) it's become confusing as hell. Every comment on this page was an expression of interest in having a meetup, and not a single one actually mentioned a pending meet. I have changed this. template:meetup is for documenting meets that have already happened, and this page is for announcing ones that are scheduled, for which a location and/or date have already been selected. →Raul654 03:56, 18 November 2005 (UTC)
- Having a list of users, broken down by area, that are interested in meetups seems to be the start of coordinating one--I'm not sure I see the confusion. If you think such a list isn't useful, can you suggest an alternative mechanism? Demi T/C 06:40, 18 November 2005 (UTC)

- (Speaking as someone whose organized several of these) Before you ever decide to have the meetup, you have to ask around and find a few people who are interested (as well as nailing down details like date and location). Tampa
Howdy everyone - I've never been to a meetup before (despite being in the top thousand in number of edits - how 1337 is that!!) but I noticed there's one in Tampa and frankly, Tampa beats New York for a place to be on January 14th. - Can this Tampa meetup actually be in Tampa this time? St. Petersburg is its own city, across the Bay from Tampa, and that has prevented me from going to the last two meetups. Just curious
Gang, I just had a very negative experiance with someone trying to find me in the real world based on my Wikipedia work. Can these meetups lead to that kind of thing? Do stalkers come to them, hoping to bring edit wars into the real world? I wold actually be scared to go to one of these. - I've been to quite a few meetups. There was one uncomfortable experience when a couple of users banned by the arbcom showed up to protest and appeal - in person - to Jimbo. Far more often, members of the press show up ;) Raul654 23:57, 5 December 2006 (UTC)
- The Minneapolis meet-up was very very tame, User:UninvitedCompany was the "highest ranked" person that showed up, and going by his arbcom votes everyone likes him so, no stalkers/protests. Meetups in other countries

Documenting the meetups
Greetings Wikipedians. My name is Nic Hill and I'm directing an independent documentary film about Wikipedia. Our film crew Underdog Pictures is following Jimmy Wales around the world and documenting the movement. Part of the film will focus on the lives of Wikipedians from all over the world. So far we have documented wikipedians in the US, India, China, Korea, Japan, Taiwan, & Indonesia. is there a special page for London meetups? / the meetup ranklist is skewed
Okay. (taking a deep breath) Many cities in Germany have frequent meetups (e.g. Karlsruhe and Munich: monthly meetups, Hamburg: every two months) so the meetup "highscore" is skewed. On the other hand, I don't think there should be such a list - it's pretty useless. I stumbled across this page because I will be in London in April and I was looking for a page like this one where users from one city connect. Underage participants
Has anyone had a problem with managing the appearance of 12-14 year old editors at other meetups? This is a hypothetical query BTW. Apart from legal implications in a group of adults being default guardians for a child they've never met before (other than on the internet), social standards and discomfort to other people attending would be offputting. Would it be unreasonable to post a message at the meetup notice saying that only people of legal age (depending on your own jurisdiction) can attend? —Moondyne 14:49, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

I have almost completed the Requests for Geonotice page. If any groups are interested in advertising their meetups, feel free to do so. If you don't know what a geonotice is, here is a quick intro:
- A geonotice is a targeted sitenotice-style message, that appears on watchlists to users within a certain area. You can see Wikipedia:Geonotice for more info.

Numbers of meetups
Hi, if those numbers are intended to be global, all the meetups of German Wikipedians are missing. We have monthly meetings in Munich since December 2003 (!) and monthly too in Berlin since sometimes mid 2004, plus many more all over the country. de:Vorlage:Wikipedia-Terminkalender usually lists about ten meetups or other events for Wikipedians per month. --h-stt !? 21:35, 28 October 2007 (UTC)

Reform this page

MediaWiki - next meetup -- where to go for help?
I administer two sites using MediaWiki technology. Both of these have "next New York meetup" appearing on them. This seems like a terrible MediaWiki bug — I don't want this Wikipedia info on my wikis!!! Can someone tell me the best way to get rid of this, or a more appropriate place to ask this question? Number of attendees?
Does anyone know the average amount of attendees to meetups? At the last Manchester one, a total of 11 people showed up, which wasn't too many, but not too few either. Some, like the NYC ones seems to have at least 2 dozen, and others only have 3 or 4 showing up. Majorly (talk) 22:29, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

- Have a look at the previous meetup pages, and spam the users who attended. I started three meetups, but didn't really do any planning whatsoever, as I'm useless at that kind of thing. Project Nabuur meetup?
The Project Nabuur Initiatives draws upon volunteers and supporters who are enthusiastic about our agenda and wish to take part in our movement (affiliated with the Institute for African Ecology and Philosophy). The main purpose of this meetup is to provide natural resource and science students with social and professional opportunities through community projects, tours for children, seminars and social events through the Young Diplomats Forum. Limits on Photography at Meet-ups
Given the current situation with User:Newyorkbrad's pending retirement, I would like that at all future Meet-Ups it become very known and clear to people who want anonymity the situation that Newyorkbrad has endured. I also think shots of people in the background not knowingly the subject of the photograph be banned. Newyorkbrad will be retiring from Wikipedia in the morning - the root of this is that he has been photographed at New York Meet Ups. That was his choice, but there is a lesson to be learned and shared. We need to stop being so sloppy. --David Shankbone 03:46, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

Using hCalendar microformat
It would seem sensible to use a simple template (or raw HTML) for each meet-up, to emit an hCalendar microformat, so that users can quickly add an event of interest to their calendar application or on-line service. Such a template would need to emit, at a minimum, mark-up like:
<td class="vevent"><td class="summary location">Anytown</td> <td>{{start date|YYYY|MM|DD}}</td></tr>
I've added an example to {{Meetup}}.

All,
Given that our community is much wider than just the English Wikipedia, I've moved the place for the London meetup pages to be on meta (see m:Meetup/London/29). I'd suggest that, to be more inclusive, others do the same for their meetups (though that's of course your choice)! :-)

Since I hardly ever visit Meta (except by accident because some help page has a link there), and have certainly never made any edits there, is there any chance that watchlists could be shared across wikis, so that meta changes could show in my English Wikipedia watchlist? --Redrose64 (talk) 21:35, 20 December 2009 (UTC)
- Well, I've met several London-based Wikimedians who had no idea at all that there were regular Wikimedia-related meetups. Particularly when meeting at Wikimania people who live a couple of miles away from me, it underlines that we're not good enough in reaching out to the wider Wikimedia community.
- I'm still planning to have a page on enwiki for each London meetup (with a link to the sign-up page on meta), but it doesn't seem sensible to exclude so many contributors.

- I think that you are rather unintentionally excluding many more people by hosting on meta, a site which noone but the most hardcore people (such as you and I) ever touch. I've met dozens of people in NYC who only found out about our meetups through the geonotice tool on enwiki, and I think it's safe to say that not one of these new people has ever had a meta account beforehand. I think you would also reach many more people in the London area if you retained the primary meetup pages on enwiki, where they are accessible to a far broader group of people, as well as including pointers to the local meetup pages on the meta and Wikimedia UK sites.--Pharos (talk) 16:05, 24 December 2009 (UTC)
