Wikipedia talk:Main Page alternatives
Work in progress
[edit]I moved the above draft here, because this is the working area.
I've analyzed the draft, and the difficult part about this design is that the color formatting for the features appears to be within the template content itself. Well, since the template content comes from 5 other departments, to get this version to work it would be necessary to deal with all five departments and have them reformat the content from their end. --Go for it!
Skins
[edit]we could add links to the skin previews as seen in the preferences menu [1] --Quiddity 06:42, 1 March 2006 (UTC) done
Making an alternative page your main page
[edit]After someone requested it on Talk:Main Page alternative (Classic 2006) and I couldn't find a solution here I came up with a little bit of JavaScript to always redirect you to an alternate Main Page when you go to Main Page. It's at User:Ian Moody/custommainpage.js and probably isn't the best way to do it, but if anyone would find this usful or knows how to improve it feel free. Obviously you will have to replace the url with the one for your preferred version. — Ian Moody (talk) 21:14, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
- I'm pasting it here in case you change yours/leave/etc :)
var mpTitle = "Main Page"; var isMainPage = (document.title.substr(0, document.title.lastIndexOf(" - ")) == mpTitle) if (isMainPage) {window.location="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page_alternative_%28Classic_2006%29";}
- could somebody check on, and summarize these instructions at top? (i don't know jscript..) thanks --Quiddity 02:43, 25 March 2006 (UTC)

Comment on recent MPA activity
[edit]It's nice to see that the page/department taking on a life of its own. I was pleasantly surprised to see that others have added MP versions to it, and innovative ones at that. --Go for it! 21:07, 5 April 2006 (UTC)
More main page alternatives
[edit]Why isn't this link on the main page? It should be! Mathmo Talk 12:33, 21 December 2006 (UTC)
- It's linked at the talkpage Talk:Main Page. The content doesn't change, so there's no reason to promote these heavily from the Main page itself. —Quiddity 19:14, 21 December 2006 (UTC)
- Ah.... I see now, that is all good. Would be better there instead. Mathmo Talk 15:41, 23 December 2006 (UTC)
other skinning methods?
[edit]should perhaps other skinning methods be mentioned? for example, stylish for firefox? or is that a bad idea? NotAnIP83:149:66:11 (talk) 00:06, 25 July 2009 (UTC)
- I cant see any harm. Done :) -- Quiddity (talk) 01:01, 25 July 2009 (UTC)
Question about new alternatives
[edit]Is there a process to go through to get a main page listed here? I was going to just be WP:BOLD and add mine, but I noticed they are all in WP space whereas mine is in user space.. I didn't know if anything had to like go through a committee or a !voting process. The page is at User:Dudemanfellabra/Sandbox2 and utilizes full CSS for the entire page. It also moves the POTD up into the left column to keep all featured content together. The links are all changed and moved around, and much of the text is changed. This is a legacy of the failed Wikipedia:2008 main page redesign proposal, so a lot of it has been discussed, but this was by no means the consensus design. I still use it as my personal main page, but I decided I should share the wealth haha.. What do I need to do? --Dudemanfellabra (talk) 15:43, 4 March 2010 (UTC)
- There's no process. Go right ahead and add it. It'll probably be better maintained than many of the ones already listed!
- One thing to keep in the back of one's mind though, is the compatibility with other skins. I use the vector (beta) skin, and there is a tiny bit of overlap of your headerbar with the pagetabs/searchbox in this skin - not problematic at this stage, but if it moved any further up it would cease being usable in this skin. Hopethathelps. :) -- Quiddity (talk) 20:01, 4 March 2010 (UTC)
- Yea I use beta too haha.. I developed it in monobook, though, back in the day, and it lines up there. The main point of the absolute positioning is to remove the "User:Dudemanfellabra/Sandbox2" header from the top and make it look more like the actual main page. If it was ever moved into the main page, the positioned div could just be removed. Should I move it to WP space, or can I just leave it in user? --Dudemanfellabra (talk) 00:17, 5 March 2010 (UTC)
- Hmm, probably best moved into WP space. Has more of an air of 'completeness' about it then. -- Quiddity (talk) 03:17, 5 March 2010 (UTC)

Some serve a special need
[edit]It says here that some of these alternatives to Wikipedia: Main Page serve a special need. Would it be an idea if examples were given?ACEOREVIVED (talk) 20:39, 8 August 2012 (UTC)
Change default main page without creating an account
[edit]These Main Page alternatives would be allot more useful to our readers if they could change their default main page without creating an account. Emmette Hernandez Coleman (talk) 01:32, 8 September 2012 (UTC)
Sanskrit Wikipedia looking for techies for their home page
[edit]Hello there. I have an unusual request for you, and apologies if you've already seen it elsewhere. Looks like the Sanskrit Wikipedia would like to have their home page compatible with mobile devices, because they are widely used to access that site. Unfortunately, past attempts to fix the issue didn't work. Is anyone willing to help them? User:NehalDaveND speaks English and could assist you! Thanks, --Elitre (WMF) (talk) 15:42, 22 September 2016 (UTC)
