Proposal to rename Local Embassy

There is an ongoing village pump discussion on a proposal to rename the Local Embassy: Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals)#Renaming of the Local Embassies LukeSurl t c 11:48, 7 February 2012 (UTC)

Instead of having a misleading title, why not have one that actually defines what is on this page? Enter: Common Sense. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.81.235.195 (talk) 03:25, 17 May 2012 (UTC)

Proposal: Delete the Local Embassy

Radical suggestion, but edits to this page happen perhaps monthly, and the vast majority seem to be misplaced inquiries. Seems unnecessary, distracting, and almost counter-productive to have this page. Thought I'd leave this thought here for a while before moving to an XfD. LukeSurl t c 17:16, 15 July 2012 (UTC)

  • You know, I was a big supporter of the local embassy but I have to agree: nothing actually happens here except for people thinking that it's a real embassy. It may be time to delete it. Caledones talk softly, please 01:51, 21 July 2012 (UTC)
    • I'm off on holiday for two weeks today, haven't got the internet access required to put up what would probably be a quite major Xfd until I'm back. However if someone else wants to do this then you have my blessing! LukeSurl t c 23:05, 21 July 2012 (UTC)
      • Wouldn't it be better to fix it? The obvious problem is the ridiculous wp:Easter egg title. The page has nothing to do with embassies. It should be something like Wikipedia:Help for non-English editors, Wikipedia:Language coordinators or Wikipedia:Coordinating with other language Wikipedias. It should also say, at least in English, what the page is for. Each language-specific section header should say in that language "These editors have offered to help [language] editors coordinate work with the English-language Wikipedia." LeadSongDog come howl! 13:04, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
        • Are there are any traffic statistics or other indication that the page is being used? Personally, I think it should go away unless there is another justification, which is not clear to me. And if it's kept, then it definitely should be renamed because of the confusion between it and a real embassy. One more thing: an embassy has several responsibilities and helping travelers is not their first priority. Number one is to represent the government of country A in country B, and to provide government services, such as visas or other government certificates or approvals, to travelers and businesses. Helping with travel arrangements is way down the list. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.185.201.194 (talk) 16:05, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

Complaint

Delete this page please it is really pointless. People just think that this is a real embassy and try and get passport/visa advice. I think that it may be time to delete this page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.209.27.111 (talk) 10:25, 8 August 2012 (UTC)

Proposal

I have recently posted a proposal regarding renaming this project; the proposal can be found here. dci | TALK 01:02, 14 December 2012 (UTC)

Inactive editors

Many of the editors listed on this page seem inactive. I wonder whether we could run a bot against the list? It could check for "no edits since 2011" (or whenever); flag them as inactive (or comment out their names); then drop a note on their talk page in case they're around, but not editing, in which case they can restore their details. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 12:13, 1 March 2013 (UTC)

That seems like a good idea, but because these are mostly bi- or multi-lingual editors there are two criteria to check: latest edit on .en and latest edit globally. Notes should be dropped on both their home and their .en user talk pages. I'd rather see them deleted than flagged as "inactive since 2011". Without getting too BEANSey, there are some obvious downsides to making such a convenient list of inactive users.

Proposal for an update to policy

There are a lot of pictures currently stored on Wikipedia that actually have their addresses at upload.wikimedia.org but aren't accessible through Wikimedia Commons. I propose that when someone uploads a photo to any Wikimedia project it will be accessible through Wikimedia Commons to increase interlingual use of files. This would be a very useful update. Bonjour. J'ai récemment créé cet article et j'ai rendu "Et moi, et moi, et moi" comme "What about me?". Je n'ai pas confiance totale en ce rendu, mais "And me, and me, and me" ne serait pas tout à fait normal en anglais, à mon avis.

Des suggestions? Merci d'avance. Formerip (talk) 22:08, 18 September 2013 (UTC)

OK, I see now I could have just written this in English. And that I may have quite a wait. Responses welcome in either language, though. Formerip (talk) 22:10, 18 September 2013 (UTC)
Hi, I agree with you, "and me" in English doesn't quite have the same ring to it as "et moi" in French. I think your translation "but what about me" is very good, as long as that is what he actually means in the song.Azylber (talk) 23:56, 18 September 2013 (UTC)
Well, whether that is actually what he means in the song in the thing I am not 100% sure about. Maybe it would help to give the first verse:
Sept cent millions de Chinois
Et moi, et moi, et moi
Avec ma vie, mon petit chez-moi
Mon mal de tête, mon psy
J'y pense et puis j'oublie
C'est la vie, c'est la vie
I am thinking that maybe "And then there's me" might be equally good or better (?) Formerip (talk) 09:53, 19 September 2013 (UTC)

Chinese Wiki

I'm currently living in China and end up watching a lot of recent releases (last year or 2) of Chinese cinema films on Television. Would I be better off posting here or on the Chinese Local Embassy section for help in editing certain pages? For instance the current page of Jaycee Chan (Jackie Chan's son), reads as if he's a disgraced and failed actor that his father is ashamed of, IMDB IMDB Jaycee Chan on the other hand talks about his success. I recently watched Chrysanthemum for the Beast (給野獸獻花) and I assume it was well received but there is little information available about the film and there is no Wikipedia page for it in either English or Chinese.

Another page I'd like help with is Xu Haifeng, an Olympic athlete (the first Chinese athlete to win a gold medal) who recently had a film made out of his Olympic story. I made some edits but if someone wouldn't mind reviewing them mostly I've only done minor grammatical edits here on Wikipedia. Once again if you someone could tell me if this is something that would be better off at the local Chinese embassy give me a heads up. My concern is the pages in English so I assume it goes here. Word Highlighting on IPAD, way to learn to listen to English

For people learning to understand spoken English, I thought I'd relate the Word Highlighting subfeature of the Speech Selection feature of both the IPAD and IPHONE (io6+). It speaks the selected text with a karaoke effect, that is, the word is highlighted as it is being spoken. People who are learning English and not able to listen to English might like this feature as it gets them off the ground as far as listening to English goes. In order to turn on the feature, Go to SETTINGS/GENERAL/ACCESSIBILITY/SPEECH SELECTION Turn WORD HIGHLIGHTING on. From then on any selected text (in any application) will have a SPEAK tab above it. Selecting the SPEAK tab will speak the selected text with a karaoke effect. The effect is not that great on the IPHONE because the words are very small and the spoken text is rather faint, but it is quite good on the IPAD where the sound is louder and the text is bigger. I think a person trying to increase their understanding of spoken English (if they are still at a low level) would profit from the effect.

advanced abuse of technology
