Wikipedia in Ländern in Afrika ohne Internetzugang

[edit]

Buena suerte. I'm sorry, but this "embassy" does not have powers like a real embassy does. We cannot help with these situations. We thank you for your understanding. Good luck. ←Signed:→Mr. E. Translations

[edit]

Suppose there are to articles about the same thing, but in diffrent languages, say, English and French. Odds are, the English version will contain more information. Also, many articles that exist in one language won't exist in another. So why not simply create a new article in every Wiki of every language that does not have a certain article by simply using translate.google.com or similar translator? Much more effeicient. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.61.249.178 (talk) 12:55, 18 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Because there's no better translator than a human. Machine translations made even by most professional programs (not some online junk like Google Translate) are often unreadable for someone who doesn't speak the originating language (English in this case) quite well and even if they are readable, they look like work of a 3rd grade kid. Wikipedia also contains many articles on fairly obscure and technically challenging subjects, which will in a machine translation yield untranslated words or phrases, which are often intolerable. Also, if we were to retain editing Wikipedia in every language, it will mean having to machine-translate every new addition, which will produce a garbled text, as information is inevitably lost with every subsequent translation (as in the telephone game). Admiral Norton (talk) 14:06, 18 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Computers sometimes have trouble 'getting' the information that isn't explicitly held in the text. e.g.s:

  • the painting was found by a tree
    • 'by' here could go with painting: 'it was the painting that was by a tree; said painting-by-tree was found'; or with 'found': 'painting was found. it was found by a tree. a tree found the painting'.
    • whilst it's logically obvious to a human, to a computer it can't syntatically differentiate the two. if it's not possible to translate the ambiguity into a language, which is only capable of saying either 'painting-by-tree is found' OR 'tree finds a painting' then there's a chance it'll screw up.
  • Jeff poked Bob with his spoon
    • who's spoon? If a language has no pronouns, a computer can't tell wether it should translate as 'Jeff poked bob with Jeff's spoon' or 'Jeff poked Bob with Bob's spoon'
  • "how are you"
    • Does this translate into German as: 'wie geht es DIR' (informal) or 'wie geht es IHNEN' (formal).
    • as the two aren't differentiated in english, there's no way of telling
  • "can I have a drink?"
    • again, is this asking a question of fact -- is it possible for me to do this -- 'kanne ich etwas zu trinken haben?'; or is it asking permission -- 'darf ich etwas zu trinken haben?'?
    • i.o.w, does 'can' mean 'can' or 'may'?

possibly, we could make an 'interlang', that holds all the information neccesary for any language. e.g., for the above:

  • painting is found by a tree
    • (((painting) (is found)) (by (a tree)))
    • other meaning would be: ((painting) ((is found) by (a tree)))
    • or possibly 'bytarget:painting is found by a tree'
  • Jeff poked Bob with his spoon
    • Jeff poked Bob with pronounify:Jeff's spoon
    • other meaning would obviously be: Jeff poked Bob with pronounify:Bob's spoon
    • alternatively: pronounTarget1:Jeff poked bob with his spoon
  • "how are you?"
    • <"how are you?"formality-0> (formality-1, etc.)
  • "can I have a drink?"
    • can(v1) -- can; can(v2) -- may; can(n) -- tin can
      • can(v2) I have a drink?

Can Jeff poke Bob with his spoon that was found by a tree?

<"Can(2) (Jeff poke Bob) with (((pronounify:Jeff's spoon) that was found) by a tree?)"formality-1>

I think a computer program should be able to translate that into most languages.

it should also be able to guess at most of the stuff in the first place ('can *** please?' should auto-guess 'can(as in may) *** please?'), and an easy GUI should be possible for normal people to help build up the extra data -- something like "the painting was found by a tree -- is the 'painting' 'by a tree' OR did 'a tree' 'find' something?"; "when you said 'it was felt', did you mean 'felt' as in 'feel' or as in 'material'?"; so it's easy for user to convert from english to interlang(en). also, if a German translates the article, when he feeds in the info as to wether something's supposed to be formal or informal, that'll also let the computer translate into any other language that has two formality modes (japanese?); hence, it really fits in with the wiki method.

interlang(en) would be easily translatable to, say, interlang(de) etc, so all languages can contribute ("kanne|darf(delete eine das nicht gut ist) Ich blahbla"); but, for actual reading, interlang can be translated into whatever language the user wants; English, German, French, whatever, as there will be enough information there (some held in the underlying language, some added on afterwards) to translate into any language.

As it says at the top, "this page is for discussing Wikipedia-related multilingual coordination". It's not about real world embassies. You might want to ask at the WP:Reference Desk for such general questions, but that's not really an encyclopaedic question either. If you're looking for a visa, you need to talk to the embassy of the country you want to go to. --Amalthea 11:59, 17 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A mess!

[edit]

This page is a bit of a mess. Given that it has a direct and static link from the main page, does anyone have any ideas about how we could neaten it up with boxes, better format, layout, &c., &c.? Orthorhombic (talk) 11:53, 27 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I think it's more or less fine. "Neatening it up" often ends up just making thing clunkier. The only issue I would suggest is making the "welcome" message box better. Right now things are too narrrow and there's too small a space between the languages. Jason Quinn (talk) 22:06, 11 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

-- JSH-alive talkcontmail 11:26, 10 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If you don't speak Scots or Gaelic, then it wouldn't be surprising that you don't know what some of those words mean. Being Scottish doesn't mean you necessarily are familiar with every language in the region, or every single word in every language in the region. TRUST : What I find still needed about Turkish Literature pages of Wikipedia

[edit]

13 July 2009, Monday - Ankara, 06.18

Greetings from Turkey,

I am myself a Turkish literary critic and novelist; and I do not wish my name included in Wikipedia pages before a number of truly prominent figures of Turkish Literature are given due justice and place in Wikipedia in accordance, of course, with the significance and the readership of their work. I have suggested a number of such writers' and poets' names in the relevant section of Wikipedia. I just find it unjustifiable how those names are unknown to Wikipedia editors (including those whom I shall refer to below).

I would like to draw your immediate attention to the fact that some names (of the younger generation) who have been listed under "Turkish Novelists" and even under "Turkish Historical Novelists" in Wikipedia do not have a time-tested, well-established, serious readership as yet. I do not need to make anybody angry but I have an ethical concern here, which, I am sure, would be of interest to Wikipedia as far as being considered as a reliable source of information vis-a-vis the reader's eye is paid attention to by Wikipedia itself. The fact that these good new writers know English and have technical access to your good site does not, and I feel, should not entitle them to be placed side by side the most prominent masters of literature in Turkish IF WIKIPEDIA seeks to maintain the trust of its increasingly growing Turkish users.

Of course, a discussion of norms as well as rights might follow; but if you had a list of today's young writers from London along with William Shakespeare (but no Lawrence Durrell, no Jim Crace, no Ian McEwan, not even Harold Pinter) under "English Novelists" page, it would be similar to the case of the present Turkish Novelists list.

The solution may be a brief consultation with an academic expert on Turkish Literature. I may suggest Talat Halman-et-al from Bilkent University, Ankara. I may also give a hand if I take part in a group of evaluators-critics (not by myself, for reaching the unbiassed solution.) There are also distinguished scholars in field in London, or elsewhere in many places in U.S.A.

It is precisely for the reason I am critisizing Wikipedia that I would like to hide my name. I am only grateful that you read my letter, and may perhaps do something to better qualify or requalify the Turkish Literature pages of Wikipedia.

Kind Regards. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.228.223.71 (talk) 03:14, 13 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Please remember that Wikipedia is a user-edited encyclopedia, not an encyclopedia written by a company. If you think something should be changed, just click "edit this page" at the top of the article that you want to change, and change it. If you would rather discuss it with others instead, click "discussion" at the top of the article in question and explain there. It sounds like you may be implying that some writers have added their own names to the article. This is self-promotion, and is not usually allowed. If that has really happened, then you should probably remove those names and complain about it on the discussion page for that article. Xezlec (talk) 03:15, 10 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Mrs Marjorie D'Arcy Stephens

[edit]

Dear Sirs

I wonder if you can help me or advise me what to do. My elderly sister Mrs D.Arcy Stephens lived in Spain for over 35 years. When she first came out to Spain with her husband Peter they bought a house in Javea. She loved dogs so much that they started a small dog santuary. When her husband died over fifteen years ago she move to Adsubia so the dogs would not cause any problems to neigbours.

My sister ran into money problems because she was spending all her income on looking after dogs that nobody else wanted. She sold her quite cheaply with a clause in the sale that she could live in the house until she died.

Over three years ago her house burned down and she was forced to live in a tin garage. Unbeknown to me she lived like that for several months until an estate rang me to tell me of her very upsetting story.

My Sister came to England to live with myself and my husband not quite three years ago. She has suffered quite alot with her health and has been in and out hospital with skin cancer. She has always worried about not getting enough money for her house. She visited Spain in August of last year and saw a Solicitor in Pego. After over a year he managed to contact the buyer of her property. The house had been renovated and sold to another couple. After some time he had managed get them to agree to pay her 5,000 euros of which a 1,000 was paid to the solicitor and the Mayor for their expensives. The sad part is that when my Sister when to visit the solitor in Pego to collect the money she took a very good so called friend with her. The money was handed over and her friend said she was worried that, especially at her age she should not carry all that money on the plane back to England. After she back to England I rang her friend Herma - ([contact details removed]) who said my sister had only been given 3,000 euros and that she would be putting in the bank for my Sister. I gave her my Sister's Bank details. I spoke to my Sister's solisitor in Pego his name was Goiquan ( I am not sure whether that is the correct spelling or not) on [contact details removed]. He told me that the money my sister had been given was 3,999,90 euros. I then phone her friend again to be told that my Sister had told her that she could the 999,90 euros to help look after dogs which she has. She promised me that she would pay the balance of 3,000 euros into the Bank on Tuesday the 21st of July. Nothing has been paid in and she is not answering any emails or phone calls. My Sister is really worring and it is making her ill as she thinks that her friend may be keeping all of the money which is due her. When I rang the solictor and spoke to his Brother he told that there was nothing that they could do, as once the money had been handed over it was out of their hands.

I really don't know where to go from here, please help if you can.

My Sister only has a small income and was relying on this money to buy one or two things that she needs to make her life more comfortable.

I believe from my Sister that her so called friend Herma told her that had sold her and would be moving soon.

I feel very angry at her friend as my Sister is in her late eighties and does not deserve this kind of treatment from anybody.

Once again if you could advise or help we would be very grateful.

Yours faithfully

Heather Goslin (Sister of Mrs D'Arcy Stephens). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.23.29.127 (talk) 20:29, 28 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No explanation given for why Hebrew needs to be used at the top

[edit]

The top of this page contains a short text in a few major international languages with hundreds of millions of speakers. There is no explanation given for why Hebrew should be the 6th language along with languages such as English and Arabic. Hebrew is not a widely used language. 6 languages alongside each other make the page very difficult to read, 5 must be a maximum. Flroian River (talk) 19:06, 27 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It seems Hebrew was added in 2008 without any explanation or consensus. Flroian River (talk) 19:12, 27 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Apparently in June 2008. Hebrew language has some 7 million speakers, in Israel and the US. -- Matthead  Discuß   19:59, 27 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Why should German be there? What's your cut-off line? Choyoołʼįįhí:Seb az86556 19:13, 27 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Because German is a major international language with at least 100 million speakers, the second largest Wikipedia (this is primarily a page for Wikipedians from other projects, hence, the most important languages (besides English) would be German and French in that order), perhaps? German has always been there. Flroian River (talk) 19:15, 27 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Even Alemannic German with 10 million in several countries (and its own wikipedia) has more speakers than Hebrew. -- Matthead  Discuß   19:59, 27 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
With that rationale, you need to erase Arabic (102,934 articles) and add Polish (637,909 articles). Choyoołʼįįhí:Seb az86556 19:32, 27 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, where did I have heard a similar claim before: Ah, here: according to Jerzy Buzek are English, French and Polish, "the most important languages" of the EU.. Lovely attitude. -- Matthead  Discuß   19:59, 27 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I have no problem with only using the large Wikipedia languages at the top of the page. Flroian River (talk) 19:36, 27 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Rationale for inclusion of various languages at the top of the page

[edit]

The total number should be limited to 5 for the sake of readability on small screens. I would at least include these.

  • English: This is the English-language Wikipedia. Largest Wikipedia edition.
  • German: Major language, second largest Wikipedia.
  • French: Major language, third largest Wikipedia.

I would certainly not include Hebrew among the top 5 (or 6) languages. It is neither a major language nor has a large Wikipedia project (less than 100,000 articles). There are 29 languages that are more important at Wikipedia. Flroian River (talk) 19:36, 27 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

As this is a page aimed at Wikipedians from other projects, I consider the size of the respective Wikipedia editions to be the most important factor in this aspect. Flroian River (talk) 19:48, 27 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

RfC: What languages should be included at the top of the Local Embassy-page

[edit]

What languages should be included at the top of the Local Embassy-page? Choyoołʼįįhí:Seb az86556 19:42, 27 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This page should be tailored to the needs of those who visit it, looking for help. As every website has a log with the IPs or domains of the visitors, it would be helpful to knew the country and/or language settings registered there. -- Matthead  Discuß   23:20, 29 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Ranking according to Wikipedia size would introduce systemic bias. What about using the official languages of the UN (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, Spanish)? Preslav (talk) 14:25, 29 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'm no programmer but I would add to any standard languages the interface language chosen by the user, or if an IP, the language(s) based on their geolocation. To those who base languages on Wikipedia article numbers I would suggest that we also want to recruit new users from around the world and that basing it on current article numbers just reinforces the fact that Wikipedias with fewer articles will be less encouraged to participate. Somewhat of a vicious circle IMHO. -- Александр Дмитрий (Alexandr Dmitri) (talk) 20:37, 29 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Matthead: Chinese has a large number of speakers, but its Wikipedia is relatively small and undeveloped (well, ok, it's about medium... big compared to the hundreds of tiny tiny Wikipedias, but small for a language of its size—one reason for this is probably that Wikipedia was blocked in the PRC for a long time). On the other hand, to take one example, Japanese has fewer speakers but a much larger Wikipedia. So someone needs to decide whether this list should be determined by number of speakers, or by size of Wikipedia. The number of speakers a language has in the real world may not necessarily be correlated with the number of Wikipedia users in that language. rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 02:07, 30 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • For languages that aren't included in the top, why not include messages in those languages within a {{show}} box underneath? They'll be smaller and less in-your-face, but still there for people who come looking (well, at least for people who can spot and recognize "Other languages" in English). rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 02:07, 30 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

GoogleTrans Gadget now available on English Wikipedia

[edit]

For those of you who have accounts on the English Wikipedia (can have unified accounts), you can select GoogleTrans in the Gadgets tab of my preferences (while logged in). From then on if you go to a page in the English Wikipedia, position the cursor over a word, AND hit the SHIFT key a popup will happen with the foreign translation of that word (or selected text) under the cursor. It's like the Google toolbar translation feature and it does all 51 to 51 languages that Google now supports.

It also translates up to 500 characters of selected text if you put the cursor within the text and hit the SHIFT key.

User:Endo999/GoogleTrans has an explanation of the gadget.

Many intermediate learners of English may appreciate being able to translate a word or two each line or paragraph in an English Wikipedia article.

The default translate language is the language in your Wikipedia profile (if it is not English and if it is supported by Google). Otherwise it is French. You can change this language by clicking on the link in the popup where the language is shown.

Needs tweaking

[edit]

The box at the top of the page would have more immediate impact if it were to read, "This is NOT an actual embassy. Therefore, we cannot provide assistance with visas, passports, travel questions, or immigration issues. Please do not inquire about these issues here. Thank you for your understanding." In the case of non-native speakers of English, clarity can be critical to enabling comprehension. The attempt to be polite sometimes throws a degree of ambiguity into the message, thus complicating things for the non-native. Frankly, I think "Embassy" was a poor choice for a name and the best solution would be to change that. Marrante (talk) 08:24, 25 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia is not an actual country. We just play one here on the interwebs, where our population is similar to Australia. We call this an "embassy" but we have neither Ambassadors nor Consuls to help you in the Real World. This page is to help editors communicate and coordinate between the English language Wikipedia and other language Wikipedias.

[edit]

Your honourable Embassy, With regard to my Past and Local Changements, I stranded beatened up cause of fur and sound Headquarters before the besieged and achieved total reach of the inner and outer part of Age. Before I came to this Town, my Full Volume Names have been under Discussion of bailing out those who created a county that never excisted and abolishing in total relyance of a sort of Past Obstruction of Character. Eversince the Fraude was overheard, some Time ago, my Recollection of Anthropology failed to conclude within to short Notice what was going on. A lot of Reports send to my Home University and Policy and other Branches to select the Items to report on Objects of Race and later on was clear that there were Adult Problems of marriage Failures or Child bearing failures which affected me at a violent rate, that could hardly be expressed in usual Language. The Force was at such a length and duration of Time that I came to the Conclusion of Collective Insanity concerning a Procedure (unknown) Fault failure of a History (Past) I was not able to know neither nor to understand why the Christians were after the Throne Change split. A normal Civilian could never be mistreated with a steady Violence of more than 6 Persons at the same Time and such a Length of neglect as the battering continue day and night and night and days for Years after years. I wondered why nothing in the practical sense was happening. people I was not familiair too could persuade me more my first informal Child name (not registred as I entered in very early Youth Time the Netherlands) than the 2nd Name in Full Sense I was inscribed and entitled too. They systematically denied my Full Senses by hardware and software destroying what is called: Life and slander both Child names of which no Picture could be shown to constellate this .... whatever sort I have become as a restricted cut Growth day by Day and belittled measured day by day. The name calling has lead such a Life that I wondered the importance of announcing and blaming and scandalising my Names of which no Character no Intelllection quotient, no Taste and Independency are related with non of the names mentioned. The surname has never been an issue, unless the not written name - accounted of no importance - has been added as righteously in Form and Picture and skills in the worst murderous circumstances you would never relate the names as a mistreated Child but as a Big General in War Time, mastering how to survive within an adjust foul play of decption of some familiare marriaged couples with forceable occult sexual problems which I have to catch and be blamed as if it is me they are talking about. Occult are the Choices according to the record they have excisted longer into my Body and Life than I could have known and probably had been exposed by an surveiller who could overheard my Name (in Frensh) being abused and decided for the not written and inscribed English Child name - before the Year of 6th when I was after baptised cause of lot of Blood loss). The Bloodlosses extremily continue in older age and the Diagframa gets smaller by matter of excavation. In summary the Crimials, the Murderers in the 1st until 3rd degree should be older than 40- 50 years. Failing Anthropology and recontructed my Birthrateright I have come to conclusion of active and passive Euthanancy as prepared halfcause of Baptism by the Church could survive Murder and impoverished after found that the Fraude abused my Full Name as it it were hers. In thios Local district where the Foundation of the family Ties has been confounded the secrecy of hormones and Minerals and so on concerning Kind of Race and Sound of Brain have after the fall of Berlin I lost my entire Property and Identiy and restarted again and again and losing it day by night night by day by the Sect of the Past (unknown). Cause they look strange to me, and do occult things I do not exactly know where they come from; that is also raised the Question: where are my Parents, what did they do to my Parents?. I cannot marry or even think of a Man when they stab into my organs more forcily than a person could normally bear. It is not even the whole phase of knowing and loving a Man to marry, the begin of thinking of a man make me already in a hostage. So logically my behaviour changed for the worst you can ever expect of a Lady, what is not known in these circumstances of dayly tough violences. I think to understand these circumstances a psychologue of war crimes could better understand this than any other Branche, nevertheless despite referring and working with Intelligence I fail in occult correatlation of my killers, what is heard dayly as hostaged I am and hardly can move to another place than fear of the Family Ties for mental illnesses, cause they have another Root; if you know or if you are acquinted too is easy to solve, or as an anthropolgue, but the occult correlationship Family ties cost me years to figure out who and why. Finaly, the occult as they gather to fight against 1 Person, me, the envoiced occult characters are probably supported by the Family as circle is some meters in totel. The Vocabulary they have is limited for years: terminology, negerskills and roots, sex, feaces and ureum and the latter of the first Idiocracy of upheaveling the ultime negroindianskills or egyption of their roots: "phalustotemdances"that is the "hombre"of their ocuult Family Ties, the most warranted, is the Issue of Fruitfull plus syndrome for the whole family and is used for influence for other women who want to become pregnant and in their methodology of equipements and tools to deliver beautifully and retain Age and better luck in their happy family married Life by matter of idiocracy abusing me to conneced the Horror of correlationship to my not able brain of understanding and comprehension the occult horror; in that illogical way they grow in charachter and in money and in other ties etc. while i day by night and night by day am neglected in practical senses to come further to grow. In other and shorter words: i am taken to hostage whenever i think of a man i like and being electrocuted day by day etc. Unidentified object: yes, indeed. ps: the words of occult indebted and rely upon words of the killer is also he associates his ex-wife with their electorial program for a new brave world of their power of medical inferiority of the past; that is probably how it started.[1] / 83.163.51.165 (talk) 17:14, 16 November 2010 (UTC)/[reply]

templates needed

[edit]

I can't figure out where to ask a general question like this of the embassy, so I guess here's as good as anywhere. Over at WP:PNT/T we have a collection of templates for informing users that they should be posting content in English and politely directing them to the Wikipedia in the language they have posted in. As you can see the list is abysmally incomplete, we don't have one for major languages including Russian and Hindi. I have relied on machine translations in such cases but it's hard to know if what they are reading is going to make the slightest bit of sense. As multilingual users that are part of a cross-wiki network it seems like the embassy would be in a unique position to help with this and to share it across the various Wikipedia projects. What do you think? Beeblebrox (talk) 00:03, 18 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'd also like to have a set of templates that says (in the native language), "If you don't understand this, someone <here> might be able to help you in <your language>." WhatamIdoing (talk) 06:30, 18 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

a list of english keywords

[edit]

Hello,

I'm doing my project into language processing and I'm using Wikipedia. I want to use several languages in the tests, included the one of this version. And since I need some articles to analyze I wanted to ask for your help. Precisely, some keywords I will explain now.

Actually what I am looking for is a list in your language with the names of those territories which represents an entity of speakers (therefore possible wikipedia contributors) of your language, the name its people or gentilic, and the name of the language (if it is the same language and it has a different name). These territories must be in practice independent from each others or at least be considered so by the speakers. This is the case of colonies, excolonies, other countries which historically speak the same language or minorities attached into the country next to yours.

For example, a list in english as far as I know is something like. "english", "england", "irish", "ireland", "scottish", "scotland", "british", "united_kingdom", "american", "united_states", "canada", "canadian", "australia", "australian", "new_zealand", "new_zealander". Since I am sure there are other territories which can fit this criteria I would ask you to help me complete it.

If you were so kind to help me in this list, I would so appreciate it! Thank you very much!

I beg to consider again the question Kiev/naming (en.wikipedia.org Article "en:Kiev") that was addressed in October 2009. This question can have international legal consequences.

This is not "nationalistic pressure to change the title". It's international relations.

The official name of Ukraine's capital is Kyiv (Ukrainian: Київ).

Look here: Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine — The city of Kyiv.

One more examples: The U.K. Embassy in Kyiv, The U.S. Embassy in Kyiv.

Kiev is an obsolete spelling of the city, which was used in the USSR (from Russian: Киев).

When I studied English, Kyiv was Kiev . But, everything flows, nothing stands still...

Best regards,

--Pavlo1 (talk) 15:54, 23 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, and welcome to the English language Wikipedia. This section of our naming conventions dictate that we use the most common English language spelling for article titles. If you can demonstrate that "Kiev" is no longer the most common English spelling we can move the article. This isn't the place to precipitate change, but we will respond once the change has actually happened. Beeblebrox (talk) 18:23, 23 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
O.K. Thank you.
P.S. You do not see a contradiction here between rules "Сommon English" and "Authoritative source"?
Happy editing. --Pavlo1 (talk) 08:34, 24 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Just because a government declares a particular version of a placename (spelling, pronunciation, or whathaveyou) to be the official name of the place does not mean that that is the most commonly used and recognized name for the place. Talk to any linguist and they'll tell you that what is actually used in actual speech and publications is the "real" version of the language, no matter what official sources may say. See, for example, Burma/Myanmar, Iwo Jima, Hawaii instead of Hawaiʻi. ... The Ukrainian government doesn't have jurisdiction over the English language and what English speakers on the street choose to use in their everyday lives anymore than the Burmese or Japanese governments do. But, if you can prove that Kyiv has come to overtake Kiev as the most common spelling, then by all means, such a change can be made, through the proper procedures. LordAmeth (talk) 18:43, 30 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The actual name of the city in Ukranian is "Київ." Since we don't use Cyrillic characters in English there is no correct spelling as far as the English language is concerned. It could reasonably be spelled "Keyev" or something too, but most, if not all, English language sources use "Kiev." Look at Bundesrepublik Deutschland, which we call Germany. It's an entire country; that we call by a name that is comletely different from what it's inhabitants call it. Beeblebrox (talk) 22:19, 30 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I think a dangling modifier exists in the message as it is now. "Although not an actual embassy either, you may find unofficial assistance at the reference desk." - for me, that seems to actually say that the addressee of the message is not an actual embassy.

Also, the message may be seen as wrapping kind of badly, because it leaves "desk." as the sole word for the last line. --Theurgist (talk) 02:34, 1 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Gracias.
