Free use within Wikipedia?

I'd like to grant the Wikipedia project rights to use my photos, but to still prevent others from using them without permission.

I tried to spell this out on each image's page, but overzealous punks are deleting such images as "non-free".

Wikipedia strives to be a free-use encyclopedia, as expressed in its policy, which states in part:

“ Images which are listed as for non-commercial use only, by permission, or which restrict derivatives are unsuitable for Wikipedia and will be deleted on sight. ”

In other words, you need to release your image under the GDFL, which would basically mean that anyone could use/alter the image WITHOUT permission, so long as they cite you as the/a author of the image and provide a copy of the GDFL. If you are uncomfortable with releasing your image under these terms, you may wish to consider whether the use of your image constitutes fair use on Wikipedia. --Tim4christ17 ^talk 06:36, 28 July 2007 (UTC)

Your terms violate the terms set forth in the Terms of Service of Wikipedia because your usage of "prevent others" in in conflict with Wikimedia's demand of "not be any limit on who can copy", which under American law you have agreed to just by usage of this site. (Thanks! Please see Personal jurisdiction in Internet cases in the United States.) The TOS specifically states:

“ Therefore, for any text you hold the copyright to, by submitting it, you agree to license it under the Creative Commons Attribution/Share-Alike License 3.0 (Unported). For compatibility reasons, you are also required to license it under the GNU Free Documentation License (unversioned, with no invariant sections, front-cover texts, or back-cover texts). … The freedom to redistribute copies: … Non-text media on Wikimedia Foundation projects are available under a variety of different licenses that support the general goal of allowing unrestricted re-use and re-distribution. The requirements for such licenses are given in the Wikimedia Foundation Licensing Policy. Individual communities may elaborate upon and refine these requirements. ”

From the aforementioned Wikimedia Foundation Licensing Policy:

“ Free Content License—A license which meets the terms of the Definition of Free Cultural Works specific to licenses, as can be found at http://freedomdefined.org/Definition version 1.0. … All projects are expected to host only content which is under a Free Content License ”

From the Definition of Free Cultural Works:

“ In order to be recognized as "free" under this definition, a license must grant the following freedoms without limitation: … There must also not be any limit on who can copy the information or on where the information can be copied. ”

No Copyright at all?

What if an image has no copyright at all? I have an image that is not copyrighted at all and I have to tag it appropriately. It is the emblem of my very small school. I have permission to put the image on Wikipedia, and use it in articles. What should I tag it as? Weirdude (talk) 06:38, 20 December 2007 (UTC)

Egypt Pyramids

The egyptian pyramids are supposed to become copyrighted. What are the implications for Wikipedia... should we delete all images of those pyramids? --CyclePat (talk) 23:54, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

It doesn't apply to us at all:

1. It isn't copyright
2. It isn't a US law
3. It only applies to exact copies

Florida Museum images

I have been given a database and gotten permission from this museum to use any images in this provided database. I do not wish for my past mistakes to continue with copyright and I again have secured any and all permission. My question is how do I relate that in my uploading so these pictures do not get deleted? Thanks.

Akshardham (Delhi) Images

New tag?

we need a new copyright tag for items that have not been created by the user, but the user has been specifically told by someone with rights to this image that they don't want any sort of license on it (kind of like the "My own work - reserve no rights" tag, except it's not my own work). —Preceding unsigned comment added by Atomtech (talk • contribs) 16:44, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

This requirement is now served by the system described in Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. I understand the need for such a tag sometimes (it has happened to me as well), but I am afraid that it is open to abuse. Sv1xv (talk) 16:53, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

Don't we need an image copyright tag for USA political campaign material?

I uploaded a scanned image of a piece of campaign literature - freely distributed, obviously - from a local mayoral candidate. Who is now mayor. Reason being, to show what his campaign pledges were. When I uploaded it, I was puzzled that there was no tag specifically for campaign material. Which, as campaign material, is obviously not copyrighted, and is free to use and reproduce. There is an astonishing level of minute detail on use of a slew of materials worldwide - but not this important category. Sub-category of Screenshots needed for webcam / live stream

There are categories specific to movies, music videos, television, and vodcasts. None of these are an exact fit for a screen capture from live streaming video from a webcam, say UStream.tv. Just a suggestion. NYEarthling (talk) 22:26, 18 January 2010 (UTC)

Use of term "image" in tags

Why do many (not all or even most) of the copyright tags / templates use the term "image", and therefore presuppose the use of the tag only within a subset of possible media, ie. images? Why is {{MIT|Copyright holder}} mentioned here?
