Here is a comparison of the same image in png and jpg. The jpg is uncompressed, and was the original format my camera took the photo in. I converted it to png and there is a noticeable difference. The jpg has a aura surrounding the post, the png doesn't. - ʄɭoʏɗiaɲ τ ¢ 21:11, 4 May 2011 (UTC)
- You converted it from JPEG to PNG? This doesn't make any sense, because converting from a lossy to a lossless format won't help at all. In any case, I do not notice a difference. And how do you explain the fact that essentially all of our photographic FPs are JPEGs, not PNGs (even though many of them are shot in RAW and could theoretically be uploaded as PNGs)? -- King of ♥ ♦ ♣ ♠ 10:39, 5 May 2011 (UTC)
- FWIW can't we upload TIFFs now anyway? I think I can see what you're talking about at thumbnail size, possibly image page size, but can't see any obvious difference at full size. Remember FPs are meant to be judged at full-res anyway, so issues with the Wiki thumbnailing should not be an issue. I'd rather the risk of minor imperfections at thumbnail size to the many other potential issues and errors that result from using PNGs. --jjron (talk) 15:32, 5 May 2011 (UTC)
- Is there a third image format that offers a middle ground? If I'm sent a tiff (still haven't gotten it yet) I have no problem uploading the raw format. The issue here is not the file format or the picture itself I believe, but rather the way wiki generates the thumbnails for either format. - ʄɭoʏɗiaɲ τ ¢ 21:45, 5 May 2011 (UTC)
- TIFFs are intended for archival purposes, and their large size simply makes them unsuitable for web use. -- King of ♥ ♦ ♣ ♠ 02:24, 6 May 2011 (UTC)
